MTG players absolutely care about getting premium accessories for the decks they've dropped hundreds, if not thousands, on. Cater to the Commander audience in particular and you can and will sell boxes.

I actually use 3 dice vaults for mtg night. One for +1+1 counter dice, one for -1-1 counter dice, and one for regular small chesexx dice for decks like atraxa. Every mtg player at my LGS loves them. And I’ve been waiting for this deckbox to be launched since they first pitched the idea.

I agree however I think the deck box that also holds your library/draw deck is a huge opportunity. No one else is doing it and the box makes a statement, something that commander and MtG players in general like to do. If it's just a deck box, one that exposes cards no less, I think you are entering a competitive market you don't want to be in. I actually loved Doug's idea of a metal piece instead of wood. Wyrmwood is a boutique gaming table/accessories company. Be that. MtG players will pay for it.

@@basementedition9415 I will say the one big hiccup I see for this product is from the user functionality end. In Commander, you're searching and shuffling your deck ALL THE TIME (obviously more in some colors/strategies/ levels of competitiveness than others). I'm forseeing it becoming annoying to pull your deck out of the box, shuffle, and slide it back into the box multiple turns in a row. This was easy to see as just a fancier deckbox before where you'd never interact with it beyond storage and transit, but the card draw slot changes that. That being said, I would one hundred percent buy one of these just for the flex. I love the design innovation of the draw slot. I've spent hundreds on some decks, whats one more stack to really bling it out?

I can’t speak for 60-card formats as I play almost exclusively EDH in paper, and the biggest obstacle I feel you had to surmount with your deckbox was the fact lots of EDH players I know have multiple decks they roll up with (like usually 3 minimum so they have options depending on how the tables feeling), so what would a deckbox that holds just one deck do for me? I honestly didn’t care about the box’s development until this episode: the idea of having something to stabilize my ridiculous double-sleeved 100-card deck while I’m trying to play with it is a GAME-CHANGER! Especially when you’re dealing with new sleeves? Whoa nelly am I stoked for this now!!

Deck box looks cool! Honestly though I'm not loving that hole in the top that exposes the cards while the box is closed. I know it's for drawing from the box while its on its side, and seems like you could just put a divider up against it to "seal" it, but if there's one thing I know about us nerds it's we realllly like our cards fully protected. Worried that it might be difficult to justify a pricy deck box that doesn't fully seal the cards. I feel like you could compromise by using the same wood as the lid is made of for that arc that fills the slot, then gluing it on with the proper grain pattern and maybe more structural support. To top it off, laser on a tiny wyrmwood shield on and it'll be framed by the different color wood. You pick up functionality from the box tilt, which is something that might make the difference between people buying it and not, and you have a box that fully encloses the cards. The difference in wood will probably look intentional as it lends to branding on 3 sides of the box, it wouldn't be the most-most elegant looking I guess since you'd loose that continuous grain, but at that point it might be worth it because you gain such an elegant design feature. Would be happy to send a sketch if you want ideas from randos on the internet :P

I also wasn't thrilled with the cutout at the top. On top of it potentially compromising the safety of your cards, it also just looks kinda tacky if you have a clean side, and then just a hole at the top.

  • @PluralPaul

    @PluralPaul

    2 жыл бұрын

@@kelm102 Another solution could be to make the half-moon a rectangle, and then add a little channel for the rectangle to slot into when you clip the lid on the box's side. That way it still acts as a stand, but adds even more rigidity/stability to the "stand" feature. Then they could do a fidget, brass logo or whatever that can can add an additional piece of fun to it, and have the ability to be turned right-side up depending on how the lid is placed.

Came here to discuss this as well. There's the possibility of just CNCing a rectangular, card shaped insert that could interlock with the lid when closed, and sort of seal itself against the opening. Would be cool if the insert also had a hollowed out portion as well that could work as a discard/scrap pile holder when taken out of the case for play. Also if they are already CNCing the bottom of the lid anyway, why not just make a channel for the half moon piece to slot into tightly. Wood glue might not even be necessary. Might also cause the lid to be made a little thicker to accommodate the channel though.

As an MTG player - Love the functionality of the tilted deck box. One suggestion - PLEASE double sleeve a commander deck (100 cards) with thick sleeves (aka Dragon Shield sealable inner sleeves with Dragon Shield outer sleeves) and use that for measurement. So many boxes out there either BARELY fit decks or don't fit them when you have them double sleeved.

Sorry Jason, but the tilting deck box is exactly what you need to make. You have two problems: 1) You need a commander-sized deck box for MTG 2) You need a drawable deck holder (the tilted box) You can solve both with a single product as was demonstrated. I love the prototype deck box shown and really you just need to strengthen the connection (with a cross grain) and you're golden. I would have the box be two-tone with the lid and 'lip' as a 2nd color from the primary box. Then the grain not 'matching' directionally on the side wouldn't matter.

I like the deck box with the tilt. It looks nice and I like that the cards are still fully protected with it on. I think making the wood cut out brass is a good idea. But i think you should put a brass cut out on the other side of the box so it makes it symmetrical. The only difference is that the one brass side is connected to the top while the other one is connected to the box. I would definitely buy a more expensive deck box where the top has a function and I could use it all the time while playing instead of just putting off to the side. Also if it fits a commander deck with the side deck would be even nicer!

This made it to where there were only two types of pieces. The base ramp and the stackable mixers. This made it more portable and you could even put a seven section tower IN the party tray. But the best part?.. The base ramp piece flipped over to be what I called the Deep Dish Component tray. An elevated and deeper hexy tray for a larger centralized bank of tokens. Even modeled the whole thing in Tinkercad. Unfortunately it seems like they gave up on the modular tower. Tho, now that I think about it. If they're not going to make it I should throw up the files on Thingiverse.

I don't play MTG myself, but based on comments I think having a deck box & draw box as separate SKU options might be the best route. You can limit the woods to 3 types to keep the overall number of SKUs lower (affordable, mid-range, and premium). This could also allow you to offer 2 different sized boxes based on game decks & do seasonal roll-the-dice or other variants of the boxes without a ton of hassle. Also, looking forward to being able to order the Toolbar when it's ready.

A couple of good points have been brought up here. First, yes, serious MTG players do spend a lot on cards but they can spend just as much on protecting those cards. I literally just bought a new high end deck box two days ago for a new deck I put together. Secondly, the other point was taking into consideration in your design, the fact that a lot of players double sleeve their cards. That makes the decks a bit fatter. On a side note, a great addition to this project would be Wyrmwood designed card sleeves. If you guys teamed up with UltraPro and made sleeves with your designs on them, I'd buy that all day long. Your corrupted and Halloween stuff would be killer. Especially with the sets currently out right now.

As for the deck box, you could change the top so that it's hollowed out instead to create that draw-slot, or replace the wooden top altogether with a metal top that could be punched out and a tab bent into place for the draw-slot, a piece of wood/cork glued on the underside would still take the strap, and you'd have free canvas for artwork tops.

Since EDH/Commander is a format that boasts a 100-card singleton deck, you can carefully assume that decks have been toppled over. Factor in double-sleeving with thicker inner sleeves and the deck while nearly topple itself. I do like the design of the card drawing function. It'd be nice to have another cut out on the opposite side of the box in order to have another side to grip on, especially when playing against decks that like to consistently shuffle. Other than that, the tilt & cut out provide a function that's an arm strap away from being a Yugioh duel disk. I like it!

Maybe tournament grinders don't buy a lot of accessories, but EDH players love them. Playmats, deck boxes, dice, bags and carrying cases, all sorts of different cards sleeves, custom tokens etc. I've been waiting forever for yalls deck boxes, a high quality wooden deck box with your aesthetic just doesn't exist right now. All the wooded ones I see are either over-stylized with weird flashy hardware and designs, or cheap looking bare bones nothings.

That deck box looks like the perfect tool for Cypher System cards. Numenera and Invisible Sun use lots (like...lots!) of cards with random magic items, encounters, etc. I'd spend money on that!

There was the deck box already before, and I thought "Alright, it's a cool looking deck box. I'm not sure I will buy one (exactly for the argument Doug pointed out, that my money was going into the card) , but I hope it finds its market" And now today there was the tilt and you could draw from it AND NOW I NEED ONE OMG THATS GENIUS You just need to not play a deck that needs a lot of shuffle, though

Seeing that the audience for a deck box is probably greater (just due to the fact that you are hitting a large audience and not just the ones that have already bought tables) and that I also want a deck box I say deck box! I have bought at least 5 deck boxes this year and if I could get a cool, functional one that would be where my dollars go. If you're gonna buy a table or have already bought one the tool bar isn't going to stop that train from rolling. I always pull my deck out :P and it would be cool to have a box where I could just leave it in the box and play and then put it back in and go home, cool idea!

I've got some very similar ones still. I know my parents had them since the early 80s at least, and to give a reference to their age, you can still see the stamp on the underside of the chairs that say "Made in Yugoslavia." 100% solid hardwood (I think oak), so they would cost a fortune today.

Seen a lot of this. The notch can't be hidden under the strap because it won't be lined up with the top of the deck box when it's open. Even if you rotated your deck to line up with the notch, you would be drawing your cards sideways either showing them to the other player or you would have the bottom of your deck facing yourself, potentially revealing extra cards.

I have been waiting years to buy deck boxes from you guys because I couldn’t afford them before you took them down a few years back. As others have stated, Magic players will absolutely trick out their decks with accessories, no idea where Doug got that idea from. All I ask is that you make the box big enough for 100 DOUBLE sleeved cards as that is a hard line for many players. Doubling it as a holder during play is definitely sweet and I love that addition

3:14 curved slots one way on one side and curved the other way on the other, if you use a deep enough cut you can have full cut thoughts that help with cleaning etc. Have the depth vary to stop water damage in case of a spill, might work better than a single depth.

These are all exciting. Could you do like a slanted dado for the lid to get the same effect and be stronger. With the paladin collab, It'd be nice to get a tile end cap where they magnetically pop in so you can essentially build your sheet into your player desk. The entire hexytime system can be translated to the end caps. Especially things like the spell tracker.

I love the design. Personally I would like a sideloader deck box because I don't care too much about the functionality of it. For me it's all about the aesthetic of the deck box, and I think this design is one of the best I've seen. That's why for me if they ever this box but as a sideloader I would be extremely eager to buy. Tbf I will probably still purchase this box but a sideloader would be something that I would 100% splurge on.
