BR in the 1980s - The Alan Harrison Collection Part 23 Chesterfield & Toton (British Rail Trains)

During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. In Part 23, Alan visits Chesterfield in Derbyshire and Toton MPD just over the border in Nottinghamshire. We first see Peak 45101 on a loaded ballast train at Chesterfield station, followed by a pair of English Electric class 20s on a steel train. Alan then moves to Toton where we see a variety of freight workings, including classes 58 and 56 on Merry Go Round MGR coal hoppers, Class 47 and class 20 hauled freight and a class 31 hauled passenger working from the northwest heading for the eastern counties. Alan has a look around inside the depot where he finds examples of class 20, 25, 31, 45, 47, 56 and 58 locos under repair. Alan also captures shots of two brick built signal boxes; Toton Sidings Centre and Stapleford & Sandiacre. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. Thank you.
Toton Sidings CenterとStapleford&Sandiacre。

AbsolutelyUKG. We were lucky enough to have 31s working out if Piccadilly on the hourly Sheffield services so I managed to get in quite a bit of haulage. Great locos.

I'd forgotten just how modern the class 58s looked in those days. So different from the 1950s-60s locos. Also, surprised to see grey-and-yellow civil engineer's stock at 4:52 -- I'd not realised that existed before sectorization.

It is interesting what you say about the class 58s Beeble. That narrow body shape, with a separate cab at each end, was indeed quite unusual at the time wasn’t it. I remember being desperate to see one and was delighted to be able to visit the Doncaster works open day (can’t remember the year I’m afraid but it would have been about 1983). The first loco, 58001, had just been completed and was the star attraction, parked outside the assembly shed if I remember correctly. We were able to climb into the cab, which seemed incredibly clean and futuristic. Sadly, I also remember seeing the line of scrapped Deltics that day, parked on the extremity of the grounds. That’s the cost of progress I guess!

Absolutely Formidable. It’s hard to imagine merry go round coal trains passing through a station every five minutes now, as they used to at Retford Low level in the eighties! Thanks for your comment and glad your enjoying the collection.

Really pleased you're enjoying them Joe. I''m afraid I can't actually answer you question though. This was the end of the fourth DVD Alan has sent me. There are still three more DVDs to go! Until I clip them down for KZread, I'm not absolutely certain what's on there, so who knows where we might go next!

Never actually went round Toton myself Kevin. In fact, I think I only ever passed it one person on the train. I really enjoyed Alan’s video from there.
