Some guys said that laptops which is older than 12 years old are not worth restoring. Do you agree with that Psivewri? (Me not)
I got an old Powerbook 150 from a friend a few days back. Really cool to use a laptop that is older then me. Amazing how far we have come and yet how little has changed.

The Acer Aspire is actually pretty new. It´s a 2017 model and it´s very surprising this got trashed. I have the 17" version Aspire 7 with a i5 7300HQ, GTX1050ti and upgraded it to 16GB DDR4 2400 Dual-Channel aswell as an additional 1TB NVMe SSD (it came with a 1TB HDD and "no OS"). The design is 100% the same.

The Amstrad uses proprietary 3inch floppy discs, usually made by the brand Amsoft. They came with an A and B side.
@jonvincentmusic
2 жыл бұрын
Hitachi made the drive. Amstrad gt a good ideal on them which is why they chose them over the standard 3.5"
Important note: That Amstrad doesn't have a 3.5" drive, it's a 3" drive. Doesn't use the same disks at all. So if you don't have any disks for it, you're going to be SOL I'm afraid.

@@Retrohertz the TC-01? I love the angles on that! Neat to see a left-aligned floppy rather than right-aligned too. Interestingly the floppy disk area actually kinda reminds me of HP’s 70s test equipment computers with their special tape drive.

The Vaio is cool looking. I cant wait for the dedicated video
4:30 That "CGA Video Card" is actually an IBM TokenRing card, hence the 16/4 marked on it. Token ring cards normally used a DE9 connector like that with an external breakout cable to the massive token ring connector.
Good haul! I look forward to seeing the restos on some of these laptops, especially the older ones, if you choose to tackle them!
I'm so glad to watch your video again and again! I'm a huge fan of old gadgets like these in your videos. I have some stocks of old gadgets including powerbooks, laptop with IDE drives came from XP era, even a transistor radio haha...Hope I can create videos like you do, sooner or later, because it's interesting to talk about old things
A tip for the Toshiba Tecra....i purchased a special Parallel port plug which is wired up in such a way that it erazes the Bios password on most old Toshiba Pentium II laptops... It worked a treat on my Sattelite 4000CDS!, I highly recommend seeing if you can buy one off of ebay!
That old iBook is awesome, I hope to see a future upload about it of upgrading it as such.

Awesome that u saved them, keep up the good work!
This is a fantastic box full of laptops. I agree with you on salvaging them and restoring them to the full brim of functionality.
Love seeing these old pieces of tech. One thing I'd like to see when these laptops are restored is how a copy of Linux with its lighter system resource needs would work compared to Windows. Used to have an old Dell laptop with Mint XFCE on it and it worked very well. Really interested in your opinions on how other operating systems might work for older tech.
Good to see you again man, missed your videos... Loving the Thinkpads with PROPER keyboards lol.
thanks for sharing the details of the hack. working perfectly fine with me
a lot of content, i cant wait !!!
Glad to see that these laptops will (hopefully!) find a new home - much better than being thrown away. It's amazing hat people nowadays will throw away, and even if Windows won't work on a laptop like this (due to the OS'es being unsupported), you could probably find a lightweight version of Linux that will run OK and make these devices fine for general usage. Of course, I'd focus mostly on the laptop with Windows 7, adding more RAM and an SSD - as that looks the most hopeful of the lot. Also - love the look of some of those really old retro machines - how times have changed! Hopefully they can be restored, as old machines like that are quite collectable!

Yup, I usually look around for old laptops being thrown away from schools and the like, I found some really cool stuff, like my Lenovo 3000 N200
can't wait for upcoming videos!!!
Those HP laptops were very common in NSW primary schools around 2005-2008. They tended to use HP laptops and IBM/Lenovo desktops for years. Before that HP and Optima were very common.
Cant wait for more videos on these laptops
Nice finds to be sure, especially that one with it's dock, can't believe it is just thrown away.
Great vid my man
I love old laptops from 1995 - 2013 there was something so cool about windows vista, windows 7, windows 98 and windows xp laptops.
1:10 Oh the R52. When I was 12 (2011) I got one from my dad and I used to play Minecraft on it on Win XP. That was a good laptop. I remember carrying almost everywhere and watching YT, drawing in paint and creating documents in Libre Office. I even managed to run my own MC server for my friends. Gosh memories. I still have it now with Lubuntu because XP was barely usable after a few years. I think I still have the old XP HDD somewhere.
The R61 is the exact model I had in my high school years. I kinda regret getting rid of it, but thanks for the memories.

You can buy a T61/T400 just for nostalgia sake. These machine are perfect combination between ol' school styling and today's usability (as long as it have intel GMA iGPU anyway, as NVS140M/FX570M on T61/p is prone to failure), whereas Radeon on T400 isn't compatible with windows 10/11 - no problem on Linux
Woah. I still have an IBM Thinkpad R52 in a box somewhere. Great machines back in the day.
hey psivewri i like your videos very much so i decided to buy your membership and now i am a new member of your channel
Love your videos man
The Amstrad is a fantastic machine and worth the time restoring. Putting a Gotek in to replace the 3” disk drive (which will need at minimum new belts) is probably the easiest mod for you look at given you probably don’t have disks etc.
Nice man good work
Watching your videos why I love older laptops

Some IBM/lenovo ThinkPad is great notebook for linux, VAIO and acer as well, not so sure about hp compaq
I'm watching this on an old Sony Vaio laptop, just had the fan cleaned and thermal paste changed, running better than ever, I definitely think old tech should be given a second chance at life rather than be thrown out, before I got it this laptop was just sitting with a bunch of parts laptops ready to be thrown away, I'm glad to be giving it a second, even third life instead. Love your work mate.
I can't wait for the coming video about ThinkPad R61! Awesome quality!
5:40 this laptop design from HP is so nostalgic to me since i played Minecraft on it first time. It was my dad's laptop.
Brood war in the disk tray is a nostalgia hit omg
Hey Nathan, I can't wait for new video in the future!
Core 2 Duo equipped laptops can definitely be used for basic tasks today. The password can be removed by removing the BIOS battery for a long enough time.
Always interested in re-purposing devices especially PC's and laptops. All my laptops in my home are re-purposed, either from eBay or old work business machines where it becomes cost inefficient for them to take back. So, like you I do a clean up and add extra RAM and replace the drives and they perform even better than some of the new laptops sold by retailers costing 2x or 3x more. Keep up the dumster diving and wish more people would do the same.👍
I'm still rocking a (fully functioning) Tecra M5. The dock that goes with it allows for so much extra expansion when not on the go. I love it. I have a second one with it's dock, who's screen died but still totally usable with an external monitor. Changing to an ssd makes them so zippy! Sad that you dissed the Tecras. The wifi switch can get temperamental, requiring a dismantle to clean up the contacts and while irritating, I've only ever had to do it twice. I bought both 2nd hand and have given them both good long lives 🥰
Started my PC journey with the ThinkPad R51! Ati Radeon 9000m graphics and a fantastic keyboard! Installed windows 7, upgraded the cpu and ram, and used it for some time :)
Nice rescue!
4:12 laptops like this are the kind of ones ive been wanting (an old laptop with a floppy drive)
Many of those machines would at least make you a few bob on eBay as they are collectors items, and that Acer was a score, you could easily sell that on Facebook. For that old Toshiba, there is a trick with the parallel port to clear the BIOS lock.
I love the ThinkPad R31!! I've once put a bluray drive in one
I still use one of those exact Thinkpad models with an ssd running windows 10. It works fine for web browsing, email, and KZread. they really are tanks!!
I used to have just such a Schneider (Amstrad) CPC 6128. It was my second computer as my first one was a 48K Speccy. I like the way you use a painted Crocodile Dundee knife like Dave does only more colourful :)

SAVE THEM ALL!!! They are all very cool!! The Evo is definitely a trooper!!
The "Hey, No looking" killed me 😂😂😂
I love this show called “Another Video”!
That's probably not a CGA Video Card in the Toshiba Luggable, that's a 16/4 Token Ring network adapter if that label is correct.
The CPC 6128 has a 3" drive, not 3.5. One of the first computers I used for programming back in the 80s. Loved it even though I never owned one. You are going to need the pairing monitor for it as it gets its power from that.
I had acquired the 6128 amstrad from my brother. The 6128 is supposed to include a colour monitor where you plug the curly cord from the 6128 into the monitor and that provides power. The disc drive is a 3” drive. I can’t remember what I done with the software from the 6128 because the monitor failed. It was a CRT monitor.
Nice collection, I've dealt with similar laptops to most of these before. I had a Tecra 8000, have a Compaq nc6320 and dealt with a nx6110. Be careful about the Tecra 8000 though, those things are notoriously known for failing motherboards and mine had exactly that, plus a broken hinge and lid. and unfortunately it was deemed too broken to repair for me and had to give it out for parts... The nc6120/nx6120, nx6110 on the other hand can develop desoldered southbridge chip if you bend the chassis too much. Just like the ThinkPad T43 series, these chassis flex way too much in the front, plus first generation lead free products, give you these problems.
Excited to see the Acer and Sony Vaio get restored. 😇😇
quick tip about the amstrad, there are 2 ways to get it working, 1. buy the official amstrad monitor (they came in green mono or colour) as the computer was designed to plug into the monitor for power and video or 2. get 3rd party alternatives that let you use the computer without the official monitor
Yes!! Another recycling e-waste videos! Happy to look forward those comupters spring to good condition!
That ibook is in great shape.
Congrats now you have content for the whole year
that 386 one. damn. that was the first laptop i've ever touched. at my 3rd cousin's farm. i remember the screen was so bad it wasn't possible to play games in it. as a kid i still spent hours playing with it and dreaming of owning one.
Viaos are awesome. And I love that SSD sticker.
In the mid-2000s, I had a couple of Toshiba Tecras that had a Thinkpad-like trackpoint.
Ive got a non SX T3200, its an interesting brick of a machine that has a 40MB hard drive and a 12mhz 286 along with an amber gas plasma display. I'm also surprised someone threw that acer out, the i5 may not be a power house but a 7th generation is still kind of modern.
My dad had an amstrad CPC when he was a child, this is my first time seeing one
5:56 you can unlock it by enter safe mode and go to users and find the specific user and pres remive password
The Toshiba T3200 would make a really cool sleeper/lan build.
Some great machines the amstrad cpc uses a belt for the disc drive and will most likely need replacing be careful as their is a metal pin that can fall out .
The t3200sx has a native VGA output on the back, but the bios is very picky about 2 model numbers of Connor hard disks. Could be a ide card with a serial controller on board, machine has 2 Isa slots
I have a similar Sony viao and only installing a ssd i am able to use it pretty well for most of my basic tasks
5:51 i am definetly looking! 👀
the design on those thinkpad are timeless.
Nice collection
That Starcraft CD itself is a gem of its own !
I'm thinking of starting a project that would make a universal motherboard to bring life to dead or outdated laptops. I'm not sure however if that would be recycling or if it would just be generating more e-waste. Any thoughts on this? The motherboard would talk to laptop displays, keyboards and trackpads directly and have a pi compute module or some similar SBC. Things needed to convert a laptop would be 3d printed mounting brackets for I/O ports, which I've decided is best since you only print the ones you need locally for cheap, a few standard 18650 cells, the main PCB itself and a compute module. One thing that makes me not want to do this at all though is the horrible screens on many older laptops, but then again I go on ebay and see a lot of laptops that have an OK screen but slow-ish CPU with very little battery life.

I would suggest you to resotre the n410c, it comes with lots of accessories, docking station, wifi or bluetooth module, secondary battery...
I used one of those silver Toshiba laptops during college. It was completely underwhelming, slow, hot and dim. Felt way slower than a 2.4 Ghz should have been, even with Ubuntu 6.10 on it.
Oh neat! I have a Tecra 8000 but not the dock, didn't know they actually existed. Also the right audio channel is dead (even with external speakers).
In 2002, HP bought Compaq and used the Compaq brand until 2013 in the USA.
