Box Truck Campervan - What I should Have Built and Holding tank install

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Vlog of my Box Truck Campervan - This episode I think I should have build a campervan for 3 people instead of a box truck for 1-2 people. Still grinding away to finish the shower I finally get the grey water tank installed.

    you are so creative in using so many tools like plasma cutter, arc welder, hand tools, wheel cutter, machine tools, etc.... that i intend to finance my grand-children so they can learn these skills as a hobby. Your skills are an order of magnitude (in physics, this means 10 time greater) than most of us. But we can learn from what you are teaching us

    You should have used a large water bladder and stored it in the engine bay.the truck engine would have warmed the water. Use 12v dc electric pumps to take the water back to the shower area where you could have a highly insulated water storage tank for hot water.. Regarding your son - hitch a trailer on the back of your truck and put a VW Camper on the trailer and have him to sleep in that. Great videos and stay safe on your travels.

    I think the best platform is a larger 4x4 Cummings powered school bus.. built like a tank, outback ready and comfortable space. One manufacturer Phoenix Cruiser offers a Quigly 4x4 with a hefty price tag but good quality control family run build.

    I would like to build something with 5.9 cummins ford dana 60 axles with a ujointoffroad leaf spring kit. That would be a pretty tough combination. The phoenix cruiser looks great but that's 125k base on the 4x4.

    Wow! I currently own that actual red Quigley 4x4 early in the video. It's now blue with an industrial coating on it and has about 197,000 miles and running strong! I just drove it 3000 miles from Denver to and around Oregon and back. I've been catching up on your shuttle bus videos and am about to install the remote door opening deal, but thinking about a full security system instead. I will have a lot of stuff in this thing when I'm done. Thanks for the videos!

    I know this video is a few months old. For a family of three maybe look at this platform I went with. Isuzu N series cab over. Mine is a 133" wb with a 14' dry cargo box, step bumper. I'm still finishing my conversion so thanks for all your videos. The 3 in front seating is a huge plus, also unbeatable visibility for all riders. Great when doing an auto tour of pretty places. One day I'll do a craw-thru like the #fusocamper people do. Those are 4x4 and real spendy. This is more affordable and the way I'm doing mine it could go back to full on work truck in a day. Good luck

    Any particular reason for putting the drain part of the tank toward the front and not the back? Not saying right or wrong, just wondering how/why you chose they way you did. Nice job on the mounting! I agree with Russ Montgomery on protecting that thing somehow... especially that big lump where the drain is.

    You might consider adding a deflector in front of the drain valve in case grass or brush runs up against it and catches there. Also now that you have moved to propane, maybe a fuel conversion kit for your generator would be useful. Good luck!

    Well, propane doesn't go bad like gasoline, you could reduce having to carry another source of fuel and longer run time without refueling the generator are a few that come to mind.

    I'd install at least a couple of steel belts or similar to hold the gray water tank. That big of a tank attached only in the ends create quite a powerful torsion on the tank. Even way smaller gas tanks have two steel belts. Good work though!

  • @JYDOG

    @JYDOG

    Yeah, I thought about that. I probably do need a little more support in the center for extra insurance. I'll probably do that before hitting the road. Thanks

  • @designrsq1640

    @designrsq1640

    If and when you choose to do it, sand down the edges of the steel belts so that they won't rub into the tank. I'd also install rubber or neoprene mats same length as the steel belts, between the belts and the tank, just to be on the safe side. Would be a pity to have that tank messed up by the belts sharp edges. When will you be hitting the road?

    I had the same comment, 40 gallon of water is 320 lbs. Add another support (or two) to support the center span. It could be as simple as some J-bolts and uni-strut. Great build JYDog.

    You'll find them easily by searching online for "fuel/gas tank (support) straps". They are made also universal fit, in lot's of different lengths. I'd go for stainless steel. Not that much more expensive. You'll get straps for 10-20 dollars. Ebay full of straps available in all lengths. You will find straps also locally in just about any car parts shop. But don't forget to install the rubber in between!

    there special tanks available that look like propane tanks for car engines but whont suck up the propane in liquid form (the pipe thats normaly inside the tank to suck the liquid from the bottom isnt in this tank ) you can refil it youreself at the pump and is permenently mounted under the truck might be good for youre rv if you guys in america can refil at the pump that is might want to put a small extention to the rear mudguard to prevent any pebles and mud from being trown against the grey water tank a piece of mudflap prolly do fine cool idea with the on demand heater , mounting it outside means absolutely no gasses inside the van , think you do need to make a cabinet for it so its out of the weather , might need a detachable chimney too so it passes the fan that pulls air intoo the van

    In fact I know where one is for a Van but I think I am going to stick with the 20lb grill tank since they seem to have refills on every corner and are highly available. Sometimes it is hard to find someone who can refill a tank. I definitely need to see about getting a chimney to keep rain out etc. The mud flap is a good idea too.

    I've seen a video with the on demand in the shower but that's just too risky for me to be in such a confined space with the possibility of a propane leak etc.. Hopefully my next video will have a good working solution. Im working on it right now.

    You can heat water be cheaper! or a heater shower unit for 100 bucks. If i can live in a dam semi truck with a sleeper on it ! I can surely live in that! I would prefer at less a full size van, bigger the better like a school bus ect> I'AM DONE WITH HOUSES! LIVE THE GYPSY LIFE STYLE ~ NEVER PEN DOWN

    Doing great man But I do see A couple possible problem areas you should really consider mounting some steel plate in front and behind the tank. If you have A front blowout or accidentally run over something it will take out the valve and if you blow A rear tire it could take out the rear of the tank. Personally I would build A complete shroud to cover the whole bottom and outside of the tank because of how low it is sitting. Maybe 5/16 stainless diamond plate.

    True, or maybe I should just lift it and put a 4x4 kit on it. That would keep it safe right? That would justify it. Just kidding. I do need to put something up front to protect it. I'll see if something turns up at the scrap yard.

    Love your slogan "Build it don't buy it"!! If I had the strength i would have been off grid 20 years ago. Now the Gov is trying to move people out of their houses that are off grid. And, or making it manditory to be connected to the sanitation systems, gas, and electric. I really want to build a rocket stove in basement to heat the upper rooms that would cut down on utilities. Tiny houses matter! this is an issue we should be fighting for a correction.

  • @JYDOG

    @JYDOG

    Maybe living on a boat is the answer. You can live off the grid almost anywhere then and the Gov is less likely to mess with you. I think that may be my next project. I'm with you on living Tiny. We are going to sell our house in the next 3-5 years and go tiny.

    Where did you train? Did you take shop in high school? I used to watch my husband build engines and I would Race the quarter mile. I learned about engines from him and I don't know where he learned about them. But I'm interested in knowing how you know how to do this? What is an on demand water heater? How does it work?

  • @JYDOG

    @JYDOG

    6 жыл бұрын

    No training. I just keep working on it till I get it right. I make lot's of mistakes. On demand means it heats the water as needed instead of keeping a reserve of water constantly heated. I really think this is the best way to go, you never run out of hot water.

    You would have found that CL find just too small.A macerator with what you did as a backup and you will never go back! Buy mine on eBay for $85.00 some mounting and 12 volts and a hose to pump to a campsite or even a standard toilet. Your mounting should have been on rubber strips. This will give a better cushion between the dissimilar materials. The racking and sloshing is going to try and loosen those nuts for sure and I would put a strap in the middle too just for laughs. Always try to rubber mount anything you attach to a vehicle. Think about it the body on the vehicle is so mounted. You should louver or put a vent and reverse mount the water heater inside the cabinet for protection. Put in a splitter so you can put in an under floor heating system later. Heating air in a camper is a waste of time and under floor is the way to go.

    Sometimes it is harder to repair something that is already made than to build from scratch. I had a scotty trailer I started repairing that would have been a lot easier to start with nothing. A short schoolie would be an awesome project. Just try to get one that's not real rusty.

    JYDOG I love your videos. I learn so much. Thank you for sharing. I'm a single disabled woman. It is amazing how i can learn so much, plan from it, and be able to do most of it myself. At least, I will have it all planned out right, prepared for everything, and can hire for the portions I am not able to do. Very low income too, but if there is a will, there is a way. I will make my way, and meet up with you some time and will thank you. Where did you get the hot watter tank? Is it called a hot water tank for a vehicle, or did you rig it out of something else?

    By the way, the Econline is nice. But, to me it doesn't look bigger than the box truck. How long is your box truck from back of the seats? There are different lengths, and I am still deciding of which to get or if a bus of some kind with all the windows already there. I'll be working out of my van so absolutely need the light and space for that though alone. Three cats too, and after I am settled on the road and comfortable with the lifestyel, I will get a German Shepard puppy. I have no idea how much dogs eat! Cats don't eat that much. Maybe it will be like feeding another person. I bet it is.

    I will trade my 1991 Cadillac Eldorado Barritz, runs great, but battery goes dead, 8-cylinder outruns anything on the road, even in snow, and you don't know it. Looks like a snub nose 38. A car that Elvis would have definitely owned had he been alive. I love Cadillacs but I need a place to live that is not in an apartment or enclosed area where I can get out and walk. I'm a vegan and combating kidney disease. I digress, I put too many groceries in the passenger seat and the back of the front seat needs to be fixed. Everything is push button and it has an LED readout that says good morning set the time Etc and gives all of the stats. Service engine light comes on and stays for a while and goes off. Bucket seats automatic shift on the floor wood grain and a kind of gold interior. I bought it in Las Vegas. Two owners, under 100,000 miles at 96,000 MI. I only drive it to the store and back and to the doctor which is probably what's wrong. Everything is original and the woman that owned it before me, in 2002, had the stats of oil changes and tune-ups. I love the car but love is not the issue right now. Front wheel drive makes it the best car on ice with c i p e d tires. I won't own any vehicle that does not have weight behind it and it has the Cadillac hood ornament. The new Cadillacs do not. I hate that. Everybody wants it. But what I want is a conversion van off grid with composting toilet, automatic, easy to drive. Contact me at helovsu@hotmail.com. My car, if it was perfect, could sell for over $30,000 as a collector's item. It's best to get it while it looks new. Paint is beautiful but needs to be washed. It's a dark greenish black and the silver metal is beautiful. And no it does not have metal along the bottom sides. Those were on Coupe DeVilles . I had one of those before this one but no metal along the bottom sides. I digress again . And shiny. The original paint had to be repainted with the original paint due to a few scratches. It is fully insured. Never been in an accident . And I found a place with the original partial vinyl top material that had to be replaced years ago, same color. I need someone that has the means to treat it as it should be treated. It needs a new trunk motor. I made the mistake of helping someone by hauling signs and empty boxes from a garage sale that hung over the back end. Should have never done it with an electric motor. But now I have figured out what I really want for it. I was never going to give it up.

    If you are truly concerned about small spaces. Then you should make sure you have a constant vent to keep a fresh supply of O2 and vent of the C02. Also a well insulated Van / Bus / Cargo Trailer that is under 100sf or 700cf should work with any reliable small heater The number one problem with small spaces is the DEPLETION of O2 .. . FYI I am intimately aware of small spaces as I served onboard submarines for 16+yrs an also live 1/2 the year off grid in a 8x20 shipping container. and my last civilian job was delivering heating oil and propane.
