--►The Bouvier des Flandres is a herding dog breed originating in Flanders, Belgium. They were originally used for general farm work including cattle droving, sheep herding, and cart pulling, and nowadays as guard dogs and police dogs, as well as being kept as pets. The French name of the breed means, literally, "Cow Herder of Flanders", referring to the Flemish origin of the breed. Other names for the breed are Toucheur de Boeuf, Vlaamse Koehond, and Vuilbaard.

I am on my second Bouviers des Flandres. He and my first one (a female) learned commands the first or second time shown. They were very easy to train for me. Mine has aggressively approached strangers near my property acting as though he was going to bite. Now, I keep him on a leash outside of the house and yard. They are calm, affectionate dogs until they encounter strangers on the property. Both of mine did well with cats. With one, the puppy met the adult cat. With the current one, we brought 2 kittens home to the adult dog. They are intelligent and often pick up words you are not even trying to teach them! I jokingly asked my female bouvier where the cat was, she went to the back door to show me the cat was outside! They love long walks outdoors; mine love the woods. Mine have not been dog aggressive. The drawback though, is the coat! It readily picks up leaves, twigs and burs. It mats easily and should be combed 2-3 times a week. They don't shed like a lot of dogs though.

I am interested in a Bouvier des flandres. I am a single female who lives in a condo in the City. I want a watchdog that does not bark alot but is gentle. I am willing to take the dog with me for most trips and can bring him or her to my office. I also want a dog that is hypo allergenic. Do you this this breed would be a good choice for me? I had a dog before.

Check out (caya's home) in the Netherlands. She breeds some of the best working line bouvier.. unlike the type you see in United States.

Not really hypo allergenic, I have severe allergies, if you do have allergies, have someone do your vacuuming with a vacuum that stays in your home, the molting sticks in carpets. This dog is not dandery like a german shepherd though, but sort of alike with the herding mindset. I recommend that you do have some rugs, because they need the traction when they are puppies to prevent injury to joints- they grow fast. Glynis you can't go wrong with this breed if you are patient and kind and assertive. Just get out walk with this dog though, they can seem lazy, but are not. Use a trainer. They learn FAST and are more independent and self assertive than most breeds. Mine is quiet till someone gets too close, the bark is deep, the dog is big. I don't know why they are not on the "Most intelligent breeds" list, maybe because of their rarity. They are up there with German Shepherds and Heelers. Herding instinct is STRONG, best not keep cats around. They will be driven up trees and onto garage roofs. Great nanny tho. They don't like out of control rowdy children.
