Today, I'm talking about a subject I've been meaning to cover for a few months now. After spending some time with the Boss RC-500 and comparing it to its predecessor, the RC-30, I'm gonna make a bold claim. I think it's the best dual track loop station on the market! Do you agree?
Thanks for watching :)

I absolutely love rc500 and I switched to it seamlessly after using rc30 for years. It completely changed my approach to looping and let me unleash the creative potential what with all the flexibility it offers. I just can't stop creating and recording on a weekly basis now. Great piece of gear indeed!🥳🥳🥳

Great video Lee .. I have both the RC 30 and the 500... I really wish they just upgraded the major flaws on the 30 and kept the same stomp pedals .. there was something beautiful about the simplicity of the 30...I find the 500 to be extremely difficult to use in a live setting .. the one thing I absolutely hate about the 500 is there no way to save a particular setting to every memory .. every single memory has to be saved individually with its own settinys.. it's a huge problem if you save all your memories and your rythyms at a particular volume in your home and then go play at a party .. there's no way just adjust the volume for all except for sliders which only helps a bit ..you would literally have to bend down and change every single memory while your playing live .. I think this is a terrible design..

I love my RC-30 but some of the pain points you mentioned are mine as well. Can’t wait to give the RC-500 a go. The new generation of BOSS pedals are amazing. By the way I loved your cover of Castle on the Hill. Ed makes his music seem so effortlessly but damn… getting the timing of everything perfect makes me respect his craft even more. He truly is on another level. Your renditions of his songs have been some of the best I’ve heard.

I just received my RC 500 about a week ago. I love it so far. 👍🏻😃 I immediately took the advice of Ben Rowlands and modified the function of the three pedals. It’s very simple. It’s Very easy to lay down a few track over-dubs and solo over top. It’s an amazing practice tool. I’m very excited to spend more time with it.

Great video. I'm in the same position switching to rc 500 from the rc 30. Can you explain again how to program the "undo" function to be a quick response/ shorter than 2 sec? It seems the manual had them all pretty long. Also any idea how to "undo" beyond 1 command if possible at all? How about re-creating the sweep filter effect from the RC 30? And lastly- do you know if its possible to use the rc 30 with the 300? If so how would you chain that? Thanks

Hi Lee. Ive just purchased an rc 500 + an fs6 dual footswitch. Can you suggest how to program a usable setup including the footswitch. I sing and play acoustic guitar around the pub circuit and was looking to ad a bit more to my show. I want to use my guitar for percussion, then add a verse chord progression, then undo/redo a guitar riff into it. Example I am trying to learn "Weather with you" by crowded house. The standard rc 500 set up is not easy to navigate around for this purpose. Regards Dave. WELL DONE, your loop covers are great!

I went totally crazy the last 2 weeks or so. Fast approaching going solo, never used a looper. Bought the RC5, SAW the 500 had a mic in 2 loopers got that. Now I'm in $650 and wondering if there's one unit that's better. Hence the 6 loop RC 600. Yes that's right 3 loopers,, starting from scratch in $1350 knowing I'll return something for a refund. I really favored the 500 and 5 since they both sync midi with a mini stereo plug, I love the volume levers on the 500 it was a beautiful unit. Decided to keep the 600 6 loop with all of those outputs in the back it's just insane. I ended up keeping the RC 5 and RC 600 having virtually no experience with loopers I know that's crazy but I loved the little RC 5. Tonight I built my first cover song using the RC 5. Intuitive percussion, learning to store.. also have 2 fs-7 foot switches. Hooked one up to scroll up and down memory slots. I scratched the surface quickly and can tell you it's a game/ life changer for me. I'll have all the backing I need by looping near fully adjustable tempo/ percussion, bass, guitar, harmony vocals but either use an interface for the mic on the rc5 or just use the 600. From what I've done in one hour with the RC 5, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever grow into or ever need the 600. Maybe I should have kept the RC 500 and the RC 5 as a slave ? IDK it's all new to me but the 600 has traditional midi Jack's where the rc5 just uses the mini stereo plug. But it was either keep the 5 and the 500, or just the 600 (I broke down and kept the RC5 as well anyway. I know I'm crazy. This is manic spending. If anyone has a good reason to return the 600 and use the RC-5 and RC-500 together instead of the 5 and 600 together I'm all ears !!!! Just on the cusp of performing solo and barely scratched the surface with loopers. Owning these 3 for the last week or two has taught me a lot (no substitute for hands on) Thank you for the awesome easy to understand video, this is what's gotten me so far in such little time, but I'm still quite ignorant of what will really suit me and if I'm just wasting money on the 600. I don't plan on playing more than one or two instruments live in stage, plus vocals, would that make the 6 loop RC-600 overkill ? Thanks for any suggestions/ opinions they are greatly needed and much appreciated !!!!!!!

Great video. I have recently switched from the rc-5 to the rc-500. I use it with single channel so I can do verse/chorus loops. When I clear a track by holding middle pedal down, It clears, but if I switch to different channel then switch back, there is data on it. I can't seem to delete clear. It only stays clear as long as I stay on that channel.

  • @UTAH100

She clears for me. Me thinks User Error. You gots to hit the REC/PLAY and HOLD- not STOP. That only...well, stops it. You said MIDDLE Button so you are doing it wrong. Easy mistake. Read the manual. It's not hard though- just play with it for hours, it will make sense. It's pretty intuitive actually. Drums turned off- see INPUT, not ON/OFF. That one took me a while to figure out. Same idea. They bury it in the INPUT section. Otherwise, the drums also come back to life when you record.

The most versatile of this type is probably the RC-600 but it's a lot bigger. It depends where you're gonna be playing and how often. For me, it's still a little bit too big but it has 6 tracks instead of 2 and a lot more I/O options so I'm still considering it. Aside from that, a lot of people are talking about software looping using something like Ableton live as you can set that up exactly how you like. The setup is gonna be way more complicated for that though. RC-500 is a good starting point but it certainly isn't the only option

Great looper with great converters that offers a lot of options. BUT: Their software engineering team should: 1. Make it more user friendly, without the the manual converting. It should take every format and convert automatically, if necessary. 2. Make video tutorials!!!!!!!!! 3. Make it work as a sound card/ recording interface as well. This this would be the bomb. 🔥🔥🔥

I feel like, at this budget, those suggestions are maybe a bit much to ask. They need to keep some features for their flagship devices, otherwise why would anyone buy them? The user friendliness, I don't really understand. I think it's very intuitive. After saying that, I'm coming from the RC-30, so they're obviously going to be similar. You could use the stereo I/O to connect 2 instruments, yes. Assuming they only need one cable each. The great thing about this looper with regards to this setup is you can configure in the menu how you want to route each input and output. For example, you want to connect a guitar and a bass as well as using the mic input for a loop mic. You could set it up so both the guitar and bass are sent to the left output and the mic is sent to the right output so that you can EQ it by itself in your mixing desk!

You can get them cheap as dirt on GC under Used. Maybe get a warranty- cheap piece of mind. Had mine a while now- works great. Go nuts, get two more studio monitors- $200 can get you decent ones and a AB/Y pedal to get 3 speakers or 2 if only using a modeler. Use the RC500. I have simple question and hope I can get a simple answer. It relates to being able to switch to a different loop and have it play immediately with no delay. If that can be done I will buy this loop device. Let me use one of our songs, That's Amore as an example. I am sure you are familiar with it. The song starts slowly with the "In Napoli...." intro. For this we use a steady tambourine sound, just shaking the tambourine. When the verse starts we have a 3/4 time percussion loop we use since of course it is a Waltz. When the song gets to what I will call the bridge "when you walk in a dream but you know you're not dreaming signore" we need to switch back to the tambourine and when that is done and you get back to "scusa me but in old Napoli that's amore" part we need to switch immediately back to the 3/4 time percussion loop. I tried to do this with my R-5 and footswitch using 2 adjacent memory locations and there is an annoying delay when switching back and forth so It will not work with the R-5 (unless I am just not doing it right). Can this RC-500 do what we need done? We do not play this song this to a fixed tempo so when I need to make the switch to the needed loop it needs to be an immediately change. We do this type of thing with a number of songs. I might post this question on a few other review videos since I need an answer to this important question.

  • @johnpower2018

@@leetownsendThanks for the quick response. We pre-record everything and use the R5 as a backing track device. When we would start the song I would activate the track with the tambourine. After that section of the song is over I would immediately hit the 3/4 percussion track and start singing the verse. Once the verse was concluded and I am ready to sing the bridge I would re-activate the tambourine track then back to the percussion track when the bridge was done. I just need to be able to seamlessly and without delay switch between the 2 and that does not work with the R5. Maybe you could try it with 2 adjacent tracks yourself and see if it works.

If I switch directly in the menu to a drum variation or pattern, everything works as it should - the drums change in the desired way, while the loop continues to play continuously. However, if I change the drums like this using an external switch (Boss FS-7, via the Assign function), the drums will change as desired, but the loop recording will repeatedly scrub on the beat on the last note. Where can be the problem. Thanks a lot for your help.

  • @leetownsend

Any LED will be difficult to see clearly in bright sunlight but I would say yes, it is better. There are different options for what is shown on the display. I like the layout I'm using in the video but you can have it clearly displaying "REC" or "DUB" if you want too. The display I use is very clear but it's not the easiest to distinguish between whether the track is in dub mode or play mode as the colours are too similar. Hope this helps

I use an external footswitch to change tracks on the RC30, which I can move away from the others so it wouldn't accidentally get triggered during a performance. My problem with the NEW layout is that when I want to stop and start the loop while singing, the switches are FAR too close together to do this safely and consistently when not looking directly at the unit. It's too easy to accidentally hit the track button (or multiple buttons) instead of the stop when you are singing into a mic and can't look directly at the unit. This is a deal breaker for me, as I find it difficult enough to do on the RC30, and it's an absolute necessity to be able to do so in my show. Sorry, BOSS, you lost me on this "upgrade." (I can't be the ONLY one who has this issue.)

  • @leetownsend

I totally get that this is a dealbreaker as it took me a while to get used to it. In fact, when I can (i.e. when I'm only using one channel or if I want to start/stop everything), I always use my FS-5U whilst singing, as I can place it where there's no chance I'll accidentally hit the wrong button. If the upgrades regarding sound quality and functionality wasn't such a huge leap, I definitely wouldn't have upgraded. For me, the less-than-perfect layout is worth the trade-off. Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated that you took the time to drop your thoughts 😊

My RC-500 has a longish (5 seconds or so) delay AFTER I hit STOP. I notice this behavior even more on longer loops. At first I think I missed the button or the looper is broken, but several seconds later, it finally stops. This really throws me off. Especially because the Drums/Rhythm keeps going. To be usable, it needs to STOP immediately. I have about 10 other memories saved. Is it a buffer/memory issue? Do I need to update firmware? I have done resets in the past. I have it plugged into a 300ma supply. Do I need to upgrade the PSU? Otherwise I really love the Looper. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? If my loop is very short, say 5 seconds, it STOPS immediately. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

That definitely sounds like a setting. I think you have it set to play until the end of the loop before it stops. This will cause the behaviour you are describing. Join my Discord server at discord.com/invite/GXFmwHBc and I'll try to help you in more detail.

@@leetownsend Thanks. I will try it. Do you know where in the menu that setting is generally hiding? Also, to clarify, I am talking about the original DUB. Not an overdub. From scratch, I hit record and if it is a longer loop, say over 10 seconds, I hit STOP and nothing happens for 3-5 seconds (it keeps listening after I hit stop.) Rhythm keeps going so when it loops I have a gap of several seconds.

@@leetownsend Yes, thanks again. The settings on these devices can be quite fiddly. Can you tell me which order you put your effects. I have a 1. Tuner going into a Compressor, 3. EQ. 4. OD 5. Reverb 6. Delay #1. 7. Tremolo/Reverb 8. Delay #2 8. Looper. Is that about right? Using the various Stereo outs and multiple cabinets spread out sounds amazing- especially with Ping Pong and/or Stereo Delay.

Arghh!!!! 😖 Just purchased a used RC-30 on Reverb and was looking for “how too” videos. Now I don’t see the point of a two track looper without the tracks being completely independent and A TWO SECOND PRESS TO CHANGE TRACKS!?! WTF!?! what’s the point of this thing! No wonder I just got a RC-3 back in the day. I’m not dropping that kind of money for a RC-500 so i guess i’ll just cry while searching for that FU-5 switch I hope I didn’t throw out.

@@leetownsend I tried the RC30 and was very disappointed with its limitations; two loops, no seperation... WTF is the point of that?? I got my Pigtronix Infinity back in 2014 but it had already been around for a while even then. It knocks the RC30 into a cocked hat with its multiple loops of one, two, three, four or six times duration or separate loops of entirely different length, three different stop modes (instant, end of bar and fadeout), instant wipe and record one track without effecting the other (and without waiting two seconds) and three hours of memory. Plus it has fifty memories so you can save different settings in each one for instant recall. I’ve been using the Pigtronix for a few years now and so far I haven’t found anything it can’t do except play drums, but it has Midi so it links nicely to my Digitec SDRUM anyway. I’d be interested to know if the new Boss RC-500 is any match for it.

I really don’t know why there’s been so much fuss about the RC30, it was never a particularly good pedal. Pigtronix Infinity has been doing everything the 'new' RC500 can do for years, but I have to admit the RC500 has a drum machine, and a better LED display. Well it’s something innit?

I think the fact it's made by Boss makes it automatically a popular choice. I have to admit, I haven't really used any other loopers, as the Boss stuff has always worked fine for me. I do miss the clunky RC-30 pedals, but the RC-500 is doing the trick, whilst keeping the small form factor for now!

Hi, the outputs on the RC-500 are unbalanced jack outputs so they aren't really designed for connecting headphones. I would recommend using either a headphone amplifier of some kind or connect your RC-500 to a computer using an audio interface (such as a Focusrite Scarlett) and use the headphone output on that.
