My RC-600 Workflow

#rc600 #looping #musicgear #design
This is an overview of my looper settings and how they work together to create the workflow I use in my loops. This talks a lot about the way various settings interact and the way it lets me do pretty fancy transitions without having to have perfect timing to execute my loops.
This is my second instructional video, and I hope you get some value out of it. If you saw my first instructional video, you can probably skip ahead to the settings at 4:38. And please ask any questions you have, and constructive feedback is extremely welcome!

I watched dozens of RC 600 reviews and this is hands down the most useful video on how to use the gear. Exactly what I was looking for as a beginner looping artist. Thank you!

That's a great video, very well done. Just for the sake of discussion: on the basic workflow, if you set tracks 2 and 3 to single mode, this is why, how and when you use single mode: while track 3 is playing you hit record/play on track 2 and you can immediately record the chorus part while you sing it and nobody sees you do it, and it happens with a single press. Right now you're having to stop 3 and then start 2, but that's the exact problem single mode solves. I love where you put the all start/all stop, I may steal that one. Thanks, man! Blinding Lights is great!

This is a great alternative approach to part of what I do with this and helps me understand single mode, since I haven't really played with it at all. That would work on many of my arrangements, though in general my arrangements are split between this faux-single mode I demonstrate and a true multi mode (my cover of Melt With You is like this). Also, I love your setup! And beautiful cover of Time After Time on your channel :).

@@RickSandersMusic I have five patch setups: one is Ed-Sheeran-style all-multi mode, the way you're set up. Another is one multi and two single, which I'd use the way I suggested here (90% of my songs are performed on that SSM mode), then I have a four-channel MSSS (I put the multi in the top row for percussion). I can use this for songs with three distinct parts, such as Wild Night, One Headlight, and It's My Life. That allows me to record the three parts on the first pass and switch to electric lead-rhythm. It's a lot of fun! Then I have a "Tennessee Whiskey" mode that's S-M but in 6/4, and an "Africa" mode that's in 2/4. It's really great for creativity and on-the-fly looping. I appreciate the discussion!

I'm so glad I found this video. I've had the RC -600 for a while now and there is a steep learning curve here. There are a lot of videos out there, but this is my favorite so far. I really like the way that you presented your work flow. It was not rushed, and it was explained very well. Keep up the good work Rick! This video helped me a lot!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you got a lot out of it. Since workflows are so custom to the looper I was worried this wouldn't be generally useful, but I wanted to try and see what people thought. And some of those tips at the end are a big part of my show these days :).

It's something I'm looking into, actually! A lot of my workflow choices are the lack of things to assign to. It would open some interesting doors having that option.

Nice vid mate. I don’t have a 600, have the 500 that I’m not real fond of. Now I’m about to try Loopy Pro and see if that works for me. Your vid is making me think again and maybe going the 600 route…hmmmm. Thanks for the info!

I feel like my response should be somewhere between "I'm sorry" for creating the uncertainty and "you're welcome" for providing the info. I actually want to look at Loopy Pro a bit myself, though I really love the 600 at this point. The trigger for making this video was realizing I was getting really comfortable with the workflow I've been able to fashion from it. Thanks for the comment!

Nice work, Rick. This is the second RC600 video of yours I have watched. Great bit of kit. I heard you say that you were avoiding the firmware upgrade to v1.3 for one of the setups. I was curious as to what issues you have had with v1.3? I upgraded my firmware and have had intermittent crashes with the pedal. I had the same issue with v1.2, too. Unfortunately, I can not replicate the crash situation while I have a camera looking at my pedals! Typical! Also, Roland havent updated their manual to include what V1.3 actually adds!😅 I have done a few factory resets with the new firmware, but the last crash wiped out the memory and its settings, including recently changed assigns! 😮

Hey thanks so much for the comment! And so sorry to hear about losing those assigns! :( The main differences I've noticed with 1.30 is that its detection of tempo (noticed in this video when I create a loop on Track 2 and then go back to Track 1 to record "1 measure") seems to have become less accurate. At least at certain (I think slower) tempos. As for the overall changes, you can find patch notes here: www.boss.info/us/support/by_product/rc-600/updates_drivers/c5037279-4000-4118-8a70-d3dadf3180c7/, but the main selling point (better stability) is something I've had good luck not getting bitten by too badly on either 1.30 or 1.21. I've heard that sending the device midi signals can cause some crashes (something I would like to do but don't currently do), and the one real bad crash I had with the device seems to have been overheating (5 hours in an outdoor gig). It's possible that some of the early shipped devices have hardware issues and it might be worth sending it back for a replacement if you're able, but otherwise fingers crossed you're able to suss things out and get it working for you!

Great in depth video, your explanations are very well presented! One thing I did not understand however, is the benefit of having track 1 on Immediate sync instead of measure. I certainly understand the negatives of that, but what benefit does it give you? Why not just have it on Measure as well? Thanks.

  • @RickSandersMusic

    @RickSandersMusic

    2 ай бұрын

Great question! And I did forget to include this. It's specifically for the "Track 1&2 start" (or if I wanted to do Track 1&3 later). That button has an assign for Track 2 Play/Rec and an assign for Track 1 Play/Rec, but it doesn't activate them simultaneously - it hits them one after another. So if I set Track 1 to Measure sync, rather than starting them together, Track 2 will start but Track 1 will wait for the next measure to start. (This was a bit maddening to figure out at the time) I might have mentioned this in my last video, but I'm not sure I ever said explicitly that this is why Track 1 had to set to Immedate sync. With Track 1 set to Immediate, Track 2 starts right away because that assign fires first, and Track 1 starts right away because of the Immediate. I hope that makes sense as I've described it here; I may file that away to add into a future video!

are you a musician? are you an active listener as a musician? Why do you have that incredibly distracting music in the back ground when you are explaining a complicated piece of gear to MUSICIANS?
