BOSNIA: US IFOR SOLDIERS MOBBED BY BOSNIAN SERB CIVILIANS

A group of Bosnian Serbs has mobbed and threatened IFOR soldiers accompanying a peace force negotiator to a heavily guarded Bosnian Serb military compound.
IFOR descended on the compound to try to establish if Bosnian Serb heavy weapons - which had been spotted outside their designated areas - had been moved back in.
But the mob believed the troops had come to arrest the Bosnian Serb commander and indicted war criminal General Ratko Mladic who lives at the compound.
Eventually the Bosnian Serbs complied with the I-FOR demands and took all their heavy weapons back into their proper areas.
American I-FOR soldiers were mobbed by about 200 Bosnian Serb civilians late Saturday in front of the Bosnian Serb army headquarters in the town of Han Pijesak.
The heavily-guarded compound is also the hideaway of Bosnian Serb commander and indicted war criminal General Ratko Mladic.
The U-S soldiers were harassed by the angry crowd.
The civilians screamed at I-FOR soldiers to leave, pushed them and threw stones at I-FOR vehicles.
Many excited civilians - waving the Bosnian Serb flag - stated that they would die to defend Mladic - they believed that the I-FOR soldiers were attempting to arrest him.
A British peace force negotiator, Brigadier General Michael Charles Weedy, met senior Bosnian Serb generals to try to calm the situation.
He said I-FOR was only trying ensure that a number of Bosnian Serb tanks and APCs sighted outside the base in violation of the Dayton accord had in fact returned to base.
However, he could not confirm if this had happened.

"You've got to remember we have a great big peace process going on here and we have the occasional minor perturbation. My job is to assist the VRS (Army of Republic of Srpska) in its compliance with the peace agreement and to do everything I can to help them get to the far end of this year and to achieve the completion of the peace process and to bring peace to this country that its people so richly deserve. And we have the occasional minor problem but we mustn't get them out of all proportion, the prize of peace is far bigger than any minor problem. "

A Bosnian Serb officer also tried to calm the crowd which demanded weapons.
They shouted at him that they were not going to leave until I-FOR left.

The I-FOR soldiers finally moved their tanks away from the crowd but I-FOR rejected Bosnian Serb demands to leave the base altogether.
As they withdrew, several U-S vehicles were hit by stones.
However, by Sunday the situation was resolved.
The I-FOR Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General William Carter, said at a news briefing in Sarajevo that all the heavy weapons had been returned to their designated areas.
But he added he believed the harassment of the I-FOR troops had been deliberately orchestrated to make I-FOR's job more difficult.

Steve Jovan I’m not talking about the economy, I’m talking about stability and social problems. A good economy means literally nothing if the people in the country are weak or extremely divided. Eastern European countries like Serbia and Romania, Bulgaria, Greece etc may not have the greatest economies, but their people for the most part are all on the same side. Now look at America, where the country is tearing itself apart and racial issues run rampant with no end in sight. Not to mention the insane crime levels. These other countries I mentioned have none of these things. A bad economy can recover, with proper guidance. But a fractured social fabric where everyone hates each other can destroy a country forever.

I was boy of 5 years when all of you came in my country. In my town were operating US soliders. We were not knowing english but We knew one word "lunch packet". Even though the soliders were kind to us children we were fast able to learn from our parents to not give them our trust.

I was there in Jan 1996. The place was a wreck, it smelled of rotten cabbage and burning tires. The people were war weary, jumpy, and disheveled. All I knew about the place before being deployed there was that the winter Olympics were held there in 1984. It was kind of a pretty place in the spring, if you could look past all the destruction. But I grew up near Detroit and honestly there are places there that remind me of Bosnia.

throw away that one civilian in the white tank top touched that US soldiers weapon. That was an assault on him. I’m really surprised the soldier didn’t butt stocked that man in the face. Now a days if a civilian was within arms distance of a soldier and shows that he can be an immediate threat that soldier has the right to use medium or high lethal force.

You see I’m in the Marines and if I was in Country and a civilian was to become and immediate threat to give me reason to use escalation of force I would’ve butt stocked him before he has the chance. The amount of training and refreshers we go through before we deploy help us identify, close with and neutralize a potential target before it gets out of hand.

sadly the problem is still very prominent, the countries are rebuilding ties slowly, but serbian official fail to recognize clear genocide and reject recognition of kosovo as an independant state, despite 92% of the population being albanian.

@@costasvas341 A simple mistake, other than their own flag they don't really know how any flag should be placed. You should google Greece involvement into the bosnian war. Unfortunately some greek "volunteers" saw an opportunity and went there and ended up committing war crimes along side serbians.

Its upside proably by mistake. Anyway, Greece was always a loyal ally of Serbia during wars, and there were quiet a lot of Serbs in Greece, and viceversa, therefore someone was holding a greek flag. Read on wikipedia the Great Retreat, greeks saved houndred thousands of lives while Serbians were attacked by everyone and forced to retreat: out of the 400,000 people who set out on the journey, only 120,000 soldiers and 60,000 civilians reached the Adriatic coast to be evacuated by Allied ships to the island of Corfu where a Serbian government-in-exile headed by Prince-Regent Alexander and Nikola Pašić was established. 11,000 more Serbs would die later of disease, malnutrition, or exposure sustained on the retreat. In some sources published following the conflict, the event was described as the greatest and most tragic episode of the Great War.

There's a handful of reasons, not just a cultural bound through orthodox Christianity. Both Greeks and Serbs have been allies since the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. As the Ottoman oppression and conquest went further, the bonds between the countries grew stronger. The true alliance was established somewhere in the early 19th century when Greece and Serbia fought in a series of uprisings against the Ottoman Empire. Ever since then, the countries had a concrete alliance all the way through the Balkan wars, world wars, and NATO intervention in Yugoslavia. Greece is one of the two countries in the Balkans (not counting Bosnia since there's a huge Serb population living there) including Romania that had not recognized Kosovo as an independent country.

The troops were told not to do anything because if they did then everyone would call them imperialists or whatever. American troops are always stuck in the middle between “useless” and “war criminals” can’t win with outsiders. But in truth we know we do the most damage, we are the first military in the world for a reason. In fact the Bosnia Serbs came to end the war once we dropped a few bombs on them.
Regrettably Russian brothers didn't help Jugoslawia essentially!
