@@astrazenica7783 the French soldiers did some building clearing with hand grenades and made some prisoners. The Serbians then threatened to kill the soldiers they kept hostages, so the then Captain Lecointre (currently General and chief of staff) put his gun on one of the Serbian soldiers head (that they just captured) to make it clear that he would return the favor personally if anything happened to the French hostages. Luckily it was the end of it and the Serbians holding the bridge surrendered. Source: a recent interview of General Lecointre.

I am British. I think the difference is that the British bayonet charges were advances to the front to escape from ambush, like the Prince Of Wales regiment in Afghanistan 2011, or the Scots in 2004 in Iraq. Stay where we are and we will all die, charge to the front and breakout, The difference is that the French chose to fix bayonets and assaulted into the face of enemy machine guns. Maybe not the smartest tactical move, but strategically it worked (the Serbs left the French alone afterwards) and I have to admire their bravery.

The worst part of the fall of communism is all of the war and death that followed. The French Air Force saved my butt in Afghanistan, so much respect to those guys. A UN Peacekeeping mission is basically assisted suicide, so glad I never had to do one!

My Uncle was sent to Kosovo as a Peacekeeper with the Royal Signals in the late 90's - early 00's. Hated every minute of it. Under constant attack from small arms and sniper fire, and never able to do anything about it. I was looking to sign up after high school at this point and he was looking to get out, so he told me a few things about it.

Borna HorvaTh Care, Nemanjići su uglavnom bili pravoslavci, samo je Stefan Nemanja, pošto je rođen u Zeti, kršten prvo kao katolik (zbog blizine Barske nadbiskupije, koja je bila vrlo jaka, i čiji sveštenici su bili Srbi). Kada je došao u Rašku, kod svog oca (koji je kršten kao pravoslavac), i on se opet krstio, kao pravoslavac. A njegov sin, Sv. Sava, je samo IZBORIO AUTOKEFALNOST Srpske pravoslavne crkve, a to znači da su Srbi mogli sami postavljati sveštenike na najviše pozicije. Srbi su pravoslavci od 9 veka, a od velikog raskola 1054, u morskim krajevima gde su živeli Srbi polako deo prelazi na katoličanstvo.

That's probably because some are French foreign legionaires. The FFL recruit from all over the world. Those that are chosen legionaires get new identities and full french citizenship. So, it's no surprise that there are french soldiers with all types of accents; including South Africans.

They were shooting on Bosnian soliders. Serbs were not in the government building.

It was actually a French and an American commander who denied ammunition and assistance to those Dutch peacekeepers as they were more worried about their own troops. Dutch had less than 4 minutes of ammo available to them. Fighting or not, result would have been the same or worse. Just shows that the UN needs to have more serious backup for all their volunteers if needed. These guys put their lives on the line for peanuts.

@@FrLawRE There was a UN inquiry on why the US and French generals, at that time in command, refused to give airsupport to the Dutch forces. At the time 56 tanks surrounded the Dutch forces whom only had light weaponry. Therefore they asked Air support to suppress the tanks in order for them to take action. This was refused. Also the British and Bosnian refused help. Conclusion was that no one had an interest in protecting the civilians there. In order to help the UN, the French and US general were given the option to remain silent. That is why further cases didn't involve them anymore. As you know, airsupport did come when it was no longer necessary. I think it was even given by Dutch airforce which the French and us general used to protect their own, national troops. So extra wry for those Dutch troops. The French and US venal only ordered those strikes in order not to be blamed. They both used that excuse in their case, but experts threw it out as an excuse. French Bengals name was Janvier if I am not mistaken. You will find all the UN enquiries into why they refused air support easily with this name. Pretty complex case. I think Bosnian leave this out as they seam only to care for money nowadays. For the UN it is important to have further cases stopped as it would make future interventions impossible if countries suddenly have to pay for errors made under UN command.

...my god I can't believe the UN, France and Poland didn't issue Article 5 of NATO right then, for what they were doing to THEM then. I mean I personally would likely have called for negotiations immediately when the war in Croatia began, heavy sanctions the minute the conflict moved to Bosnia, and prepared, and after the Concentration camp reports and the commission of experts was formed sought a multilateral coalition for Deliberate Force if they did not cease the assault on Bosnia, talks of the governments form are reasonable...not ethnic cleansing, a state terrorist assault, and devolves into genocide in the East and Northwest parts.

@accatt2204 sadly European leaders such as Mitterrand called us "unnatural in Europe" because we have the right skin color but wrong religion. Clinton said that Mitterrand told him this privately and those were his words. UK supported that at that time and that is when CLinton realized America will have to go in and so they did. UK and France then followed and it resulted in this. French soldiers however, despite their asshole Mitterrand leader, were really nice tome as a kid. By the end of the war they put me on one of those armored vehicles and gave ma chocholate and a ride around my city since until then I never knew how a chocolate tastes like nor what it is nor what my city actually looks like. French soliders had heart and so did American. I don't know about now... I think internet ruined people and maybe many would support killing us but I don't know. I can just tell by how many Bosnians are turning nationalistic now that similar trend maybe exist elsewhere in Europe as well. After all I have survived I have learned not to hate. I will never understand it.

Literally everytime i tell a pole im serbian they always have great things to say. most of them say something along the lines of "i dont know why or what the government was doing" in regards to their involvement in the war. i have no problem with poles and in recent years poles have done a lot to strengthen the ties between us. so yeah we will still be calling each other as brother, no matter how much you wish we didnt lol.

@@gopnikbratan2074 We always send our love up to our Polish brothers! Polish solider came to serbia as soldier of NATO. He was captured and treated as a P.O.W. These are the unfortunate circumstances but nonetheless, it is what it is. I hope he survived and made it out. Poles are always welcome in Serbian lands :)

@@alioshax7797 actually, the reason the UN couldnt do anything and had to step down in Srebenica is because it was missing a UN mandate to engage in action, which would have been blocked by Russia through a veto. Hence why Nato engaged in Kosova, they didn't want to play along russias little poltical games and watch another genocide unfold.

@@psobbtutorials6792 That's the point. UN is not some unilateral organism dominating the world. UN's actions follow its members' decisions and interests. On this particular case, Russia (and, at the begining and to a lesser extand France) had good relations with Serbia.

Some level of concessions were made by allowing the peacekeepers to enter, however their ability to protect the country was severely hindered by the fact that they couldn't get a UN mandate, which was opposed by Russia. Russia certainly isn't a good guy in this scenario
