His famous "Fantasy Art Techniques" book from Watson Guptill showed what a generous teacher he was. His text was direct, clear and concise, and with no hidden secrets. Every step was shown clearly. For that humble, non obsfucating spirit alone, I tip my hat off to the man.

I have one of his books. :D It was very inspiring for me when I was younger. My only critique of his art would be that they are sometimes overworked (too polished), something he himself warns about in the very book of him that I have. I found that I often liked his colour sketches better than his finished works because they had more life, even if they were also less refined. But regardless, he's one of my favourite artists.

Completely agree. It makes his illustrations feel more stiff and artificial than Frazetta's. However, as it's his deliberate style and just different, it's all good as well.

This is how Frazettas style was superior to Boris IMO. Frazetta has good form but you can see how he lets some of his brush and canvas texture come through.

@@te9591 Yeah, it makes them less "perfect" but more alive, so to speak. I do like both however. Frazetta often used a smaller colour palette than Boris though. They both are great and have their flaws. :P

Interesting that Alberto vargas and Boris Vallejo, both hail from Peru. Their work is extremely sensual and polished to a point beyond human perfection. It is that brushless, perfect look that makes me think that, Vallejo has more in common with the 19th century academic painters such as William Bouguereau than with the Renaissance masters.

when i was a kid in the early 80s i had 3 or 4 big Boris posters hanging in my room that my father got me, he was into fantasy art and i was really into Dungeons & Dragons. Boris is a great artist and i like his work but honestly i sort of out grew it. the problem is it feels like he just paints the same picture over and over and over and over again, its almost always a muscular women or man or couple right in the center large and barely dressed with some beast or monster threatening them. i love fantasy art but i like art that shows a fantasy world, big magical forests and landscapes with the heroes not taking up the whole frame but looking small in a giant beautiful fantastic world. also it can be very nice looking at the cool outfits and armor and i love the detail of folds and wrinkles in fabric.

Because Boris used people posing for reference his figures were always stiff although I've seen a couple which weren't (and were better for it) his work lost points for dynamism. But his use of colour was so detailed you could overlooked the stilted poses. A master technician with a unique style Boris reigned supreme in fantasy art. With a more dynamic style only Frank Frazetta could match him.

They were still pin up like, but they at least drew you into a fantasy realm. And he had a beautiful, exotic looking model back then. His Julíe era pieces were all about surface and textures. mehhh... All hand and eye skill, with no heart. Polished and technical, but mere rendered superficialities. ▪️Good Fantasy art should capture your heart and imagination, not just your eyeballs. It's Storytelling that draws you into a world, not mere Surface which can keep you out of it.

Boris was a part of my entrance into the creative arts field, along with other fantasy artists working in the 80s. However after establishing my own career as an illustrator and teaching at universities across the world, I don’t think his work has aged well, it looks like accomplished A level work, skills centric, limited in ideas and desperately overwrought. Democratic publishing via the internet has enabled us to engage with superior creatives and you wonder if like the fine art world, some of these illustrators simply benefitted from a closed shop agent-driven model for creatives. That’s my thought anyway.
