The Australian authorities are so professional compared to the US. They are not yelling, talking crazy to people, or threatening to harm anyone. They actually treat people with respect despite the crimes. Very interesting.

For a moment I thought when she took a sip from the bottle of water, I thought it was a drug that was affecting her. I was so afraid for her. I watched a similar thing happen to a young 16 year old kid crossing from Mexico to US and the border patrol officer made him take a sip of the liquid containing fentanyl. And even when he started getting sick within 10 minutes, she never called an ambulance to help him. And then they end up finding out that his parents were being held hostage till he delivered the drugs across the boarder.

I imagine it might be to do with wanting to cook food to taste like at home, we still don't have the variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Generally they weren't educated on why biosecurity is important, especially in Australia as an island country/continent. Depending on when this is, they may not be available. In recent times with TCM becoming more available, many medicinal plants and herbs are available but at astronomical prices comparatively. Not justifying, just speculating.

@@virginia2949 I can't say about now, but 30 years ago when I ticked 'No', I was missing context. When I saw 'food' I had to think what this means. I've traveled to SEA countries before and were familiar with the cash limit, weapons, etc. and why. So I thought it was referring to fresh food and not shelf-stable products. I thought, maybe they're concerned about cleanliness. That first trip in, I brought a few packs of instant noodles and boy, did I got in trouble. Instant noodles weren't allowed 30 years ago because they contain egg. Nowadays with Internet, it was relatively easier to search information on this and you can use Google Translate. Smart Traveller website is always a wealth of information. Department of Agriculture website was extremely helpful navigating on what's allowed and what's not coming back into Australia. However I'm acknowledging that Internet access are not yet universal and some travelers do travel 'adventurously'.

you can, as far as customs/filling out immigration forms, ask either a flight attendant to help you fill out the form, or if they were too busy, just tell the officer when you get to the counter that you can't read/write, and they will help/explain what you need to fill out.

Im honestly just surprised that no matter how many declarations violations it's a flat fine. So long as it's not drugs all the food violations just one flat fee. In America it would be 360 per item violation. Good on Australia border officers though, from what i see they try to remain unbias and calm no matter the issue brought to their attention. They are super cut and dry but by what we see on film they never mistreat anyone even though so many people threaten their agriculture and economy and try to flood in millions in drugs on the regular. If i ever visit I'll be sure not to violate a single rule but im sure id still be so anxious i would be questioned and pulled aside but at least i know better than than try or test them. They aren't letting anybody slide no matter what story they tell they are strict to the book. Nothing wrong with that.

After 9 mins of watching, just a suggestion: when you ask someone a question, do not offer them the answer. Do not. Wait for an answer. Do not give them examples of what you want. Let them answer. Let their anxiety rise, possibly causing more truthfulness more quickly.

It should be added as well that, based on personal experience, once you got caught with food you get checked regardless in your next visits before they stopped after consistently non-offending. So sometimes it's a routine check to make sure you're not a repeat offender.

Written as though someone who has never been outside your home country. The rules when crossing an international border are very different. Everything, luggage, carryons, your devices, even your person (inside and out) are subject to inspection. The only exception is for diplomatic personnel and representatives with diplomatic passports on official business. I travelled as part of my job, every time I crossed an international border I was inspected because of my extensive travel history. I planned for it, so I could always remain on schedule. The cargo that accompanied me was also inspected. So did the case of training manuals I used.
