Yeah... Honestly, how people interpret "what a meme is" is interesting. It seems to mostly be based on what people are most frequently exposed to. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them frequently check social media and are inundated with picture based memes and don't think of memes beyond that. I wouldn't have been surprised if someone had mentioned another, like "I have the high ground", and it would've clicked for him.

@@nekhumonta I'd say shared a lot with the intent of communicating "something" (even if that's just "haha funny"). So, like, a pen(or, your example :P) would not qualify, but most forms of media would. Additional caveats would be that it isn't designed to massively shared(like a book or movie), it just is(like a passage people find amusing), and that it is "bite sized"; consumable in an amount of time where it does not feel like an effort/event.

Its been awhile since it ever came up, but I think that "You must construct additional pylons." did transcend its original context because I never played that game but i remember it being used to joke about requirements you have to accept but don't understand. Like when talking about bureaucracy or programming.

An absolute bafflement in a first round of guesses is representative of meme culture as a whole.

Fun Fact: Meme is a term coined by Richard Dawkins as a short hand for the academic study of memetics which is (a somewhat discredited) idea that culture can also experience darwinian evolution. Meaning any piece of culture that is repeated enough that it can survive past the orignal context is a meme. I have probably got some of this wrong so please correct anything.

Maybe culture can't experience darwinian evolution, but it is subject to similar survival of the fittest competition, with only ideas that have a way of staying around (usually by being beneficial to people who hold them) surviving

New inventions/aspects of cultures (lets call them mutations) either survive because they're beneficial, or they do not and die off. But you could probably make the same argument with entire cultures who had ideas that were total horseshit and lead to their own demise too. Sadly there's probably thousands of cultures that effectively ended themselves that we'll never know about because they we're either too limited in their technological advancements to document it or perished at the hands of those who were. It sounded like you were unsure in your comment but then bolstered it as to why it was wrong with all the right information. So for all the reasons you DID actually stat, I'd argue that culture CAN experience Darwinian evoilution. Strongest argument I'd make is that the entire planet went to war with itself less than 100 years ago over certain German cultural ideas. That idea, and 35million people did not survive as a result.

You don't understand, Duncan. A meme is anything that becomes popular enough to worm its way into the cultural zeitgeist without having actually seen the original. Animations, movies, even these jokes that became memes now, started off as animations/movies/pictures that then people turned into memes. Anything CAN be a meme, but realistically, most things don't get that far or people try too hard.

Memes are like porn; there is no meaningful definition but you recognise what it is when you see it.

I always thought the original meaning of the term "meme" was essentially an idea that gets repeated, and then when ideas/images/phrase started spreading and being repeated across the internet, they were referred to as internet memes, and then eventually just memes (I might have got that wrong so feel free to correct me if I did, I'm not always the best at finding the right wording)

A "Meme" (originating from the Greek "mimema", meaning "imitated") is a unit of cultural information spread by imitation. The word was actually a thing even back in the 1970s, long before the internet existed.

27:24 “it’s infectious” I think Lewis has it. Actual memetic theory refers to the spread of ideas and thought patterns from person to person. So basically any thought you spread that continues to spread is a meme in the classical scientific definition. Of course internet memes is not referring to this exactly, but also it kinda is. You can see why it used the word meme to describe catchy internet trends/jokes/images/etc.

Of course the two memes with pixel art were the ones to make it through!
