One thing I really love about old-school hip hop is how the producers and DJ's are crate digging record nerds like me. They have a true appreciation of old forgotten jazz, blues, soul, funk, rock, classical... any music from anywhere really! I once read that scratching requires the same amount of skill and precision as the violin- to make it not sound like shit at least.

Well, that's what hiphop was and where the roots are. Pioneers like Kool Herc started extended the break beat parts of funk, soul and blues songs by using two records of the same song. The MC, usually only there to heat up the crowd and make announcements, used this extended time without lyrics to talk over it.

@Skynet Cyborg I'm so sick of hearing those same roland drum machine beats while some jerkoff with clown hair mumbles some cat-in-the-hat lyrics about how cool he thinks he is. "I USED TO BE A BROKE ASS LIKE YOU BUT NOW I GOT BITCHES AND MONEY!" I DON'T CARE! I like musicians who can actually play an instrument or at least sing without the help of autotune. I worked with this one dumbass who thought Tupac was "soft" because he sang some R&B songs. He had a great voice! Why not use it?!

@@Slig1977 You don't get it. Music never changes, the listeners do. Like Alan Watts said, "The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance." We don't see 80's, 90's, 50's, 60's music anymore because listeners got bored of it. You only value it so much because it's no longer here. In the 48 Laws of Power, Law 16 states "Use absence to increase strength and honor". Old music and films have done exactly that. They are no longer being produced so their strength and honor has been substantially increased.

Nice and smooth. Vibe.
This is the sound that I miss so bad. It was creative, unique, told a story and made you feel cool hearing it. Now, it's double time beats that feel like they're missing something because the drums are so weak. Rappers are repetitive, always talking about the same things. No message. Gimmicks with weird hair and tattooed faces. The emcee is dead. That's why you're a real hip hop head if you're here, and I salute you.
