I was happily reading a book in a restaurant and a guy comes over and says I wanted to talk to you because you look bored! I brought my own print book with me somewhere and you think I don't want to be reading it? People thinking that I am not busy because I am "just" reading is what annoys me.

One more thing - when your parents tell you that you should be in bed at 4 AM, that's just them doing normal parent stuff. It's their job to set rules in the house. I get a lot of books from the library, but I also love buying books. There's no reason a person can't do both, as they are definitely different hobbies. Some books, I buy because I want to support the author, or just really love the book and want to be able to re-read it whenever I feel like it. I also love history and when I read a history book, it takes me a while and I wouldn't be able to tag a library book and keep it for reference.

Maybe you could respond with something like, “I used to think I didn’t have time to read, but then I started substituting the time I spent on my phone or watching TV with reading, and I found I had more time than I thought I did!” Not that there’s anything wrong with looking at your phone or watching TV. But a lot of people who would direct that type of comment at you (“wow, I sure wish I had time to read as much as you do!”) are trying to make you feel like you don’t do enough with your life. At least, that’s been the case in my personal experiences. I just keep reading! 😊

One thing that annoys me is when someone asks me to tell them about the book I'm reading when I know for a fact they don't like books/don't read/aren't actually interested. This has less to do with the other person being annoying and more to do with my internal conflict, because I will always want to give them a big long explanation, but I know they're only asking to be polite, so I have to find a way to sound excited about my book while not sounding too excited about it. Or even inherently think we are smarter; but I think it’d be extremely difficult (or even impossible) to garner the same knowledge on a specific topic without reading about it. Like reading a history book verses watching History Channel or playing Assassins Creed. I mean apart from going and getting a history degree (which would require a ton of reading anyway) You shouldn’t go around being an asshole about it, but that doesn’t mean there’s not some truth in it. What really bothers me is when people cuestion me about the money that I "waste " on books instead of buying other things that I actually need. But, I mean, first of all is MY money that I earn by working and also if they don't like to see me with the same clothes all the time I think they should look other way! Hugs from Argentina🤗. PS. My biggest pet peeve is when I show someone my book collection and their first question is “why do you have so many copies of the same book” and when I explain that the book is very meaningful to me and there are many beautiful editions they say, “well you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover!” a) I’m allowed to do what I want with my own money b) the entire point of a cover is to prompt you to pick up a book because it looks interesting. With the bookish community it is very easy to get recommendations for books that you might not pick up in a store because the cover is not as attractive as the others. Also, for each edition of a book, someone has put time and effort into making the cover and if I appreciate it, I like to show that appreciation by owning a copy that I can show to friends and family.
