Evelyn Hugo was just the book that EVERYONE in my country ( Brazil) read last year, but I don't read yet, I think now is the time!

N.K. Jemsin's writing stlye is so refreshing and she's so talented. The fifth season is one of the best books I've ever read.

Merphy, since your so intent in making us add so many books to our TBR list, why don't you make a video explaining how you choose the next book after you've just finished an amazing one (or rather any book in general), or what you do if you're in a reading slump and want to get back up? Idk, just a suggestion

Animal Farm was one of the few books we had to read for school that I quite happily picked up again after I finished. It got across exactly what it wanted to without a word wasted, and was thoroughly engaging throughout.

What is amazing is I never had to read this book or catcher in the rye. The irony is some teachers had their students read the picture of dorian gray, but I bought at the book sale at school for fun, did not not get the chance to read it, and read it for British Lit 7 years later. Books I had to read: (Don’t have to read the list) The Great Gatsby Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night The Bean Trees To kill a mockingbird The Lord if the Flies The Alchemist: my favorite on this list Of mice and men East of Eden You get the idea. Curious if anyone has read this far, did you read any of these. Never hear about Steinbeck. Not a fan, personally, but never hear about him on book tube.

@William Morrison i tried rereading Frankenstein and did not know why I enjoyed it the first tome. Maybe I read a different version that was bot filled with never ending monologues. I just wanted to get to the part where the monster is self aware and wanted his wife. I could not stand Frankenstein’s internal monologues.

Our Shakespeare was Othello and after that, R&J. Othello was a good shout, as our teacher got us past the intimidating phase by having us imagine the plot as something like out of Hollyoaks (a popular UK teen soap opera). The basic plot of "arsehole feels a grudge against person, tries to ruin their life by making their spouse out to be a cheater" is exactly the sort of thing you'd get on a soap like that and it got the kids on board with this as a story they could find themselves invested in.

I guess the lies of Locke Lamora won’t be on this list ;P

If you liked Ender’s Game, Ender’s Shadow is basically a must-read. I usually don’t use that term, but this is a specific situation.

I loved that book more than the original. It's been decades and I still think about those little kid gangs with their little bait kids. So unrealistic but at the time I was like 'genius!'.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I felt that same connection... I even went out and bought Anna Karenina afterwards because I wanted to know more even if it was just the plot of one of her movies

You should read Ender’s Shadow. It’s not a sequel, it takes place at the same time as Ender’s Game but from a different perspective. It’s the best of the other books in that universe.

I love Seven Husbands!! One of my favorites. Hugo is such a complex character and her ambition really resonated with me

I’ve just finished my first Frederick Backman book, My grandmother sends her regards and apologises (which has a slightly different title in the American translation) and I’m definitely going to read more of his stuff. I had bought it ages ago when I saw it in a shop and thought it looked interesting but I never got around to it and kind of forgot it was on the shelf till I heard you praising him and recommending his books in general. Oh man, I hated Evelyn Hugo. I absolutely loved The City we Became and have a mission to read Jemisin's backlist because her writing blew me away.

Merphy, as a fellow fan of Ender's Game and fairy tale retellings, may I suggest Enchantment. It's a sleeping beauty retelling written by the author of Ender's Game. It follows a grad student who goes to Ukraine for research where he finds a damsel in the woods in an unending sleep. He knows he has to kiss her to wake her and when he does, he immediately regrets it. She wakes up wondering how the "knight" who rescued her is such a skinny boy with no sword fighting skills. It follows their adventures and relationship as they are trying to escape the one who put her in the sleeping curse.

I know a book that's quite a bit like how you're describing "The 7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo"! Nine perfect strangers. Its characters feel so real, they r not heros, but so wonderful. Some really serious topics are explored. Like trauma, mental health, substance abuse. And it's told from several perspectives. The plot n the exploring of the characters are balances out n in the end I really wanted to keep following these characters ☺️☺️☺️🤍

Yes, about Evelyn. Daisy Jones and the Six was the same. I was convinced The Six was a real band!

I am FINALLY reading The Fifth Season next month! It’s my first time reading Jemisin’s work too, really looking forward to it. :) I have Bird Box on my shelf to read sometime this year - haven’t seen the movie yet, so hopefully it’ll be a great time. I am going to nope right out on the worms of The Troop.

I just started Into the Drowning Deep earlier today! I’m only one chapter in, and I’m already intrigued by the setup, and now you’ve made me super excited to get into it. It will be interesting to see if I have similar thoughts about the ending. 🖤❤️

Treasure Island is, in my opinion, the second best classic novel ever (next to LOTR/Hobbit). It was SO FUN. I have never had that much reading a book in my life. Love love love

I "buddy-read" Into the Drowning Deep with one of my best friends last summer as a way to connect with her long distance, and I have to say it is one of my favorite books of 2020, even though I read over 50 books! Mira Grant is one of my favorite adult sci fi writers. As a scientist, I really appreciate the depth of her research and truly awesome settings. Would love to know how you organize your tbr and pick which book to read next, that's my biggest issue right now. Too many books, I can't choose!

You know what’s funny is most of these books I recognized from back when I was able to watch all your videos regularly (Still love your vids, just busy). Most of these was like “oh yeah didn’t you just talk about that one? I remember that video!” 😂 I still vote you read Ender’s Shadow because it’s a companion book and not a true sequel (and totally worth it even if you don’t read any of the others). Jemisin's prose aren't bleautiful in a flowery way. For the sake of metaphor, hers are like gemstones. Highly polished, and manage to be harsh and beautiful at the same time.

North And South. I thought it would be John Jakes' North And South...but it wasn't. The best Civil War novel ever!!!

PLEASE read The Queen's Thief series!!!! They are genius! They start out younger/ya-ish but as the characters grow up, so does the audience. Please please please

All nonfiction books are soooo under rated I have loved all the nonfiction I have read because real people go through real struggles to the backdrop of actual historical events nothing is made up or sugar coated. I don’t understand how people think nonfiction is boring. Don’t get me wrong fiction can rip my heart out too.

7:15 Another book I think does 2nd-person really well is Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (sequel to Gideon the Ninth). It has a reason for it and once you find it out its really satisfying.

For a long time, you didn't mention Skyward at all. And then recently you've started talking about it everywhere! I think I'm gonna read Wonder Struck, if I get the money.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of my favourite books. I got my friend to read her Daisy Jones and the Six, and she told me that at some stage while reading the book she had to accept that this band wasn't real. She didn't know what to do after because there wasn't actual songs to listen to that the band made so she just had to sit there and suffer. She is releasing another book this year and I am definitely reading it.

I think you would love The Secret History by Donna Tartt, it's a literary fiction and it centers around a group of students who kill a fellow classmate (not a spoiler, it tells you in the prologue). It's very well written and sounds like something thatd be right up your alley

Read Speaker for the Dead it is the book he wrote first and Enders game was just a short story till the publishers said he couldn’t have a short story before a book. Otherwise all the others are shit. My dad actually met Orison Scott Card and he thought they were shit. He wrote them to please the publishers.

I was able to get my hands on the Wonderstruck ebook, read it in one sitting, and cried lol

Evelyn Hugo was based on actress Elizabeth Taylor (married eight times to seven different men, she has an awesome biography) and also on Ava Gardner who actually did talk to a journalist about her life, and a book about their conversations was published, both amazing women, I would definitely recommend checking them out if you liked Evelyn

I have the same problem with recommends. My Libby holds list keeps growing, even though I have many books on my shelf I also want to read. I'm lucky though that my wait for The Fifth Season is only 4 weeks 😁

I don’t know if you know this because I haven’t heard you talk about it, but Mira Grant who wrote Into the Drowning Deep is a pen name for Seanan McGuire who also wrote the Wayward Children series (Every Heart a Doorway, etc.)

I’m on chapter 4 of the troop and those small chapters we get from the unidentified man of him eating is so disgusting but I am loving it even though I’m barely into it.

AH, I'm reading Fifth Season right now! about 40% through it, took about 80 pgs to get into/used to NK's style

I heard that Into the Drowning Deep featured killer mermaids and that was all I had to know. Borrowed it from the library, loved it and eventually bought my own copy. The only problem I had with the ending is that nobody will fund a sequel so it feels unfinished. Oh and the prequel novela goes for ridiculous prices online and there's no digital copy which sucks.

Any thoughts on Sara j mass, I’ve gotten a lot of mixed opinions as to whether I should read throne series or court series. As I would like to not waste my time with them and you, for the most part, share my opinions on book recommendations I would very much like to know your thoughts if any on those series. Speaking of illustrations and prose combined, I wonder what you'd think of Malice and Havoc? They're by the same author of the Ember Blade, and they're really great books. Middle grade/young Young Adult, but they were so good!

Dear Merphy, There's a book I listened to a while ago that I can't remember the name of and was hoping either you or someone in your bibliophile community could help me find the title. It's about a girl who has to go around in a US postal service truck assassinating people because of some small prints in a contract that she signed not knowing that that was in there and now she has to be a contract killer for this big corp. She is joined at some point by a guy who just comes along for the ride. Thanks!

Why am I the outsider! I want to love fifth season as much as you and apparently everyone else. I just finished it last week and have no desire to go on. I’m so sad.

I remember putting The Troop in my TBR at one point. Then for some reason I took it off, but I couldn’t remember why. I was thinking about picking it up again because I’m in a slump and wanted to read some horror to get me out of it. Thank you for reminding me about the animal abuse. That was why. How easy was it to skim over that?

It was a good book, but the animal stuff really bothered me. Here are the animal parts that you can skip, while still enjoying the book: - Whenever it's a Shel point-of-view and he plays with bugs - Shel remembers a terrible story with a kitten - THE TURTLE. OMG Skip the whole scene with the turtle.

What happen to Shogun? One of the best historical fiction books ever written. I was looking forward to a review of it. No one ever talks about it on youtube
