Book Review: Helen Joesph Armstrong's Patternmaking for Fashion Design

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Helen Joesph Armstrong's book "Patternmaking for Fashion Design" is the first patternmaking book I bought. In this video, I discuss my new series in which I review my favorite patternmaking books and show you pattern manipulations. I also review the 4th edition of Helen's amazing book.

I've started reading this book, the only challenge I have is the mathematical aspect, I understand how to read a tape but it takes it to another level. If you can please kindly do a video on this explaining the mathematical part, I'll be so grateful. Thank you.🤗😁

    Great Minds think alike Katelyn. This book was a fabulous book to start patternmaking with. Patternmaking can be sooo frustrating when you are trying a manipulation or design you haven't tried before. It is easy to see all the toiles/muslins as mistakes, but they really are learning experiences. And when you get your pattern to be just as you designed it Wow does it feel fabulous!

    I have filmed a few more book reviews featuring patternmaking. I never thought to do videos on my grading books ALthough I have to admit I have far fewer of those resources - I have a workbook from university, two good books and have one book on my must have list. I think I avoided discussing it as I find it a tricky topic. Even though we studied it in school (manually and in CAD) and that I am currently grading my own patterns I do not feel like an expert on the topic as there is soooo much to it. The part I find the trickiest are when the grade rule changes for plus sizes. I will make a couple videos about grading including a book review. Thank you very much for your feedback it is appreciated.

    I am happy you enjoyed the review of the book. I have seen the book on the thriftbooks website before although it is still not a cheap book. Although you might find cheaper patternmaking books out there I do not think there are any as comprehensive as this one for someone who is learning how to create and manipulate patterns. This is just my opinion from my experience - I cannot guarantee that everyone would agree with me - and I hope it helps you. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment.

    I loved your review of HJAs book which I have and use a lot for pattern manipulation. I also have the three Pattern Making Techniques books you referred to and very much look forward to your review of these. I would especially ask your opinion on the blocks which I find confusing. The description shows a standard example of measurements but doesn't include the ease given in the actual drawing so I don't follow if, or when, to add it!!!!

  • @Duellingdesigns

    @Duellingdesigns

    6 жыл бұрын

    Jan, great question. In the past I have used blocks I made to my measurements and manipulated those according to the descriptions in the Pattern Magic books. I have not tried to use their blocks. It worked well for me because I am not even close to the Bunka-style measurements of their sloper. I am just more comfortable working with my own blocks I suppose. I have made a couple garments straight from the book with my blocks (Flip turn, the knot are two favorites) but for the most part, I use the ideas in the books in my own way in my patterns. I have not had any problems using my own blocks for this BUT I do make a toile/muslin each time so if the fit isn't right, I alter the pattern and sew it again. I know that in the Patternmaking Stretch Fabrics there is zero ease for their blocks and negative ease for the hip area. I will have to look into ease in their blocks further and answer that question in the book review. Thanks for the question Jan! :)

  • @jankennedy8464

    @jankennedy8464

    6 жыл бұрын

    Dawn, thank you. My specific question is in Vol 1 page 111 the basic trouser block. The first sentence gives measurement of hip as 92cm + 2-4 ease for the example. Then it starts by asking you to draw a rectangle where AB = 1/4 hip circumf [e.g.: 92 :4 =23cm] So why is the number 92 and not 92 + 2 - 4 ease? I totally agree that I need to make a muslin but when I can't even get past the very first instruction to build the block in the first place it's just so frustrating.

I bought my copy in New Zealand when I was living there. I live in Canada now, but I have not seen a copy here to know if there is a difference. I bought this copy before I enrolled at Massey University and was pleased when I started classes to find out it was the text we had to buy for school. Oh, I wish your video came out just a week ago, I JUST purchased a pattern making book - "How to Use, Adapt, and Design Sewing Patterns", by Lee Hollahan. How would you rate this book? Do you consider it a beginner or advanced book? Yes! tell me about darts. I also want to know about ease, what designs and what fabrics need how much ease. What amount of ease is built into the big 4 patterns? Into Burda? Q: why is there such a rave about INDI patterns fitting so well and the big 4 fit so poorly? Q: how to fit princess seams Q: when you were in school how much sewing did you do? How much was lecture?

    I have one of the first publications of Helen Joseph Armstrong's book and I never buy clothing patterns. I took a course at a design school in the 80's. If you know fractions and how to use a ruler, you can do this! Save the money you won't be spending on manufacturer's sewing patterns and use your money to buy essential rulers, fabric, and a good dress form. You can make everything from dance wear to a warm, winter coat and all of your designs will FIT you (or whomever you have taken measurements of to make them garments). There is NO NEED for any other patternmaking book, in my opinion, unless you wish to add a book called "Draping for Fashion Design" (different author) which is a "how to" on fabric draping.

    I know there are quite a few patternmaking software programs on the market. I have used Gerber software which is used in the fashion industry. It is quite pricey but fantastic. I have also used Wild Ginger's Cameo software and it is a lot less expensive than Gerber and is aimed at home sewers or small businesses. I have heard a lot of the small independent pattern designers use Adobe Illustrator to create their patterns. It has a monthly subscription it is a lot cheaper in the short term. Illustrator is not patternmaking software but vector based software for illustration so it will not make Markers, or some of the things the other programs do but I can say all three can be used to create patterns. I can do a video in the future that delves into the matter further. Thank you for watching the show and for commenting.

    Sorry for the late reply. The book uses inches. I think in cm and have had no problem using the book. I hope this helps.

    "Pattern Drafting &Grading Women's and Misses' Garment Design" by M. Rohr is like a Bible for patternmakers/designers. I love my reprinted in 1981 (first published copyright 1968). Never buy a "vintage" sewing pattern since the styles ARE vintage. I believe this book is out of print which is unfortunate for those who want to learn the true art of making slopers that fit every body type (even pre-teen and misses' half sizes!!). My book cost $25 back in the 80's when I took a patternmaking course at a design college; complete with 1/4, 3/4, and 1/2 inch foundations to draft up from and sizing charts, etc. 112 pages for drafting various styles of the following: bras, swimsuits, beachwear. shorts, jackets, (double breasted, bolero, cardigan, single breasted with peplum, etc.), skirts (2-piece skirt foundation, 4-piece flared skirt draft, 6-gored skirt, peg-top, side-pleated draft, skirt with a yoke, circular, pants, slacks, and slim draft, sleeves (raglan, kimono, push-up sleeve, coat sleeve, fitted, cap, etc.)necklines (cowl, V, high neckline, jewel, etc.)jumpsuits (thigh-length playsuit, ankle length, evening wear, etc.),collars (flat, stand-up, Peter Pan, notch, roll, vest abd collar in one, etc),dresses (dartless, styles with darts, nightgowns, pajamas, pinafore, evening, princess, cocktail, full length, higher neckline, etc.), skirts (circle, A-line, dirndl, culotte, etc.), coat (box-style, Chesterfield, princess reefer-style, etc.How to grade your patterns by increments required to decrease/increase size for half-size, junior, ladies, misses, teen, pre-teen.You can even make mom and daughter matching patterns! Why ever buy a commercial pattern again? I haven't!!!😍
