Seriously this. BRC has lighting closer to the original JSR, but that was better there because the locations were small and packed with objects and detail. In BRC the lighting is very flat but the locations are closer to JSRF so the world ends up looking empty and lifeless. When they made JSRF they knew bigger areas need more detailed lighting to look good. That and there being no Japanese influence in BRC kinda takes away a lot of the appeal for me. Style IS substance, and I don’t think any fans of JSR should be able to disagree on that.

It needed more quality of life improvements, like a collection checklist for characters, songs, and outfits, and map markers for taxi stops, dance pads, and bathrooms. It had the Rep counter, which helped track how much graffiti was left, but if you found the map and bombed all the spots, some areas still had missing rep. You didn’t know where the rest of the tags were unless you happened to notice the one NPC you could talk to that would trigger them. Also some areas were bugged and didn’t track rep accurately. I ended up with more than the max rep in Versum Hill. It also could benefit from a rebalancing of the heat system. Nothing annoyed me more your heat level rising every time you tagged a spot and having to watch the cutscene each time. And if you used a toilet to get rid of heat, you couldn’t use the same one twice in a row. And having to remember the bathroom locations because there are no map indicators was a bit tedious. My last issue is more of a skill one, but the post-game high score challenges are so freaking difficult. If you lose your combo at any point, just give up. You won’t beat the score. It took me a long time to get the ones in Pyramid Island and Millenium Mall, but I have yet to beat Versum Hill, despite getting as many combo multipliers as I could in the time limit. And on Brink Terminal I barely even got half the required score. So that kind of killed my enjoyment. But the story is fun. Artistically, they nailed it. Some songs had the vibe like they were plucked straight out of JSRF. It’s worth buying if you enjoyed JSRF.

brc is such a good game with amazing gameplay and just everything is really good, except that the locations needed a bit more tweaking to the lighting, and adding more stuff to it, or more verticality to them. looking at this comparison of the inspired locations, you can see how much more vibrant and interesting jsrf looks compared to brc and its all just because of the lighting and lack of detail on the location itself, some places look really good but those are usually smaller and either go for a vertical layout or a horizontal one.

Also I'm curious as to what changes will be made in a future jet set compared to this like the jet pack, different vehicles, minimap and upside down skating for example. Brcf was a great nostalgic remake of a classic game and franchise but in all honesty its a different skinned jsrf and tbh I wouldn't be surprised if this was a love letter from team reptile to Sega saying hey we love jet set so much we made our own that we hope give you the inspiration to make another jet set and who knows they could hire, collaborate, or license out the ip with them to make this a reality.

As much as I love Bombrush Cyberfunk I feel as if it's lacking an independent identity. In essence, Bombrush Cyberfunk IS Jet Set Radio Future, and more often than not it only brings up comparisons that are not in its favor. For instance, I like how BRC has more expanded combos and combo options, but while more trick and combo focused gameplay would be better suited for a game like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater it's not as much for a game like JSRF. At it's core JSRF was a stylized platform jumping game with rollerblades and more focus on movement and navigating the environment. That's why the races and Tagger's Tags were much more memorable, not to mention all the time trials you get from Roboy. Meanwhile BRC has like 2 races throughout the whole game and no repeatable time trial modes with scoreboards, while everyone complains how the trick competitions are too easy, not to mention a complete lack of a multiplayer VS mode. Still, I loved playing through BRC, but I feel that's mostly only because JSRF is abandonware with no existing PC port.

It is curious that I managed to learn of two projects that exemplify the "Surpassing inspiration" phrase so well. Bomb Rush was the first Spark the Electric Jester (a game heavily inspired by Sonic) was the second. Though seeing all the direct comparisons, I hope Team reptile really manages to take off in their own direction and push the concept forward, where Jet set didn't get a change to be. Also, don't you find it funny how the cancelled sequel of Jet set was developed by "Dynosaur Games," while "Team Reptile" developed BRC? Reptiles - Dinosaurs. you know.

I made that comparison too. I’m glad the next generations are moving forward with their own ideas after being inspired by the greats. The next generation needs their ‘Sonic’ and Spark does just that. The same can be said for BRC, half of the story is a meta narrative on just that. Heck, the attempt at DMC & FLCL are similar yet fallen-short attempts at a similar sentiment. The day is new but the hands are still busy with work that need to be done. Speaking of dinosaurs, long live the Last!
