I doubt their oil likee bronz at over a hundred thousand rpm probably ceramic like they use in f1 for those that don't know ceramic bushings is a where they take a lubricating ceramic like tungsten sulfide or moly and actually make the bushings out of it extremely expensive

Your $15 hair dryer singes the hair, had non exact heat control, no ionisation, non tourmaline heater and probably takes much longer to dry the hair

@@Kubulek17 it's 1750 watts, about the highest wattage you can consistently run on a 15a circuit. Hair dying speed is a function of wattage. It never singes hair.

@@shawn576 i used to use cheap hair dryers, with weekly blowouts I was getting haircuts every 2-3 months as my hair was trashed. Upgraded to a professional hair dryer ($100+) then to the dyson and I can go 6-8 months without a haircut, my hair is shinier and less frizzy too

The weight distribution is amazing for this dryer (I'm a stylist and it saves my shoulder a lot of pain) but a two year warranty has always been fishy to me for a $400-500 dryer. I went to the reviews on Dyson and other professionals speak of how great a tool is but after 2-3 years, they need a new dryer. This video helped me hop off the fence. I'll stick with Babyliss dryers. Thanks!

I imagine some of these would fail after the 2-3 year mark, and it would be very expensive to set up a service department that could fix them, so they probably just junk the ones that come in for service. It's a rip-off to only give a 2 year warranty though. Should be 5 years and most of the devices would last at least that long so it wouldn't cost them much.

Iamhereblossom "proof" used to mean testing, so "the proof of the pudding is in the eating" probably means "the way to test the quality of something is to try it the way it was intended to be used". That's just my hypothesis though.

The only Dyson product I've ever seen that I actually thought I would want to own is their room fan of similar technology. The thing was almost dead silent when it was on and moved a ton of air. It was also like $350. I came home with a $17 box fan instead.

YES IT IS. As a woman who owns and has used the Dyson hair dryer, daily, for over a year now I can tell you with 100% honestly, it's worth it. But a tip to people buying this for their partners: make sure she/he has a place to properly store the dryer, so it will not get beat up by other tools, brushes, etc. (I put it in a vanity drawer, by itself, the drawer is lined w/ a towel for impact absorption.) This is not just a hair dryer, it is a piece of fine electronics. If your partner can't grasp the concept of how bad impact shock is for electronics, don't waste your money. When in use, especially for women doing a round brush blowout, there's going to be a lot of setting it down on the counter. I place a towel on the counter to absorb shock. The unit comes w/ a piece of silicone for this purpose but it's just not big enough. A fluffy hand-towel folded in half is better. Last thing, the on/off switch is a little stiff, even after a year. If you don't slide the switch hard enough, the unit will temporarily stop working. If it's hot, you're done, it's going to be 15 minutes before it will work again. I'm sure this is a safety feature, not many people will run into it, but it's worth mentioning - be solid with the switch when turning it on. That's it -- treat it like the fine electronic it is, and it's worth it. By the way, I watched this video before the purchase....yes, the whole thing. lol

I bought a fancy pants, high efficiency hair dryer like that a while back for nearly as much. The biggest problem with it, though, is the consumables! Go figure! I gotta refill the friggin oxygen and acetylene tanks every couple months, plus my hair doesn't grow back much anymore.

This guy is brilliant. One of those people who can talk about anything and it sounds compelling, unique and informative. Sili-con-carnie? There's no need for that. But it's like everything in this video. Hilarious Genius.

My wife bought one, and here are her results: 15 minutes drying time down to 5, 20 minute styling time down to 10. No caught strands of flying hair, no burnt ends, and no tangles. Much quieter, and can put it away right after use. Happy wife, happy life.

The only problem is, with most of these devices, 99% is rock solid, then they put some chincy cheap plastic switch, garbage caps, etc. in as a premature failure mode, and your "overall" build quality number goes from 100 to zero. Designed obsolescence is what the really smart engineers get paid the big bux for. None of these pro-sumer tools will be homegamer repairable, by design. So a ratings system would be more like "which of these devices has the least shitty longest lasting built-in failure mode?". Once AvE knew he'd have to destroy the dyson to get it apart, wish he would have torture tested it to see what let out the smoke first.

Dude what do you do for a living lol? Your knowledge of engineering and material composition is unparalleled lol.

Hands down one of my fave youtubers... And a fellow Canadian.. this guy knows his stuff more than any other ive seen..

I love how he calls the hair dryer a tool. "Its not an insulated tool."

I worked for a computer that sold and repaired custom computers. The president one day was talking about how every computer came with "SBL technology" Later I asked one of the techs what he was talking about... "Shining blue lights" :P

It screeches because the system is low on water, it's the compression vessel screeching, go into the property and find the top up valve, pressure Guage should not go higher than 2,

The difference between General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), is the addition of synthetic rubber. In the end product the rubber is in the form of tiny little bubbles inside the polystyrene. This gives it impact resistance. The rubber in the product is also what makes it white, where regular polystyrene is actually clear. (Ofcourse the manufacturers of the actual items can mix different types of polymers and add colours themselves) Source: I work in a Polystyrene plant.

Dyson design their own brushless digital motors but they do outsource the manufacturing. The circuit boards are really cool though, so custom made to fit in the enclosure. Their electronics design really impresses me, the way they can cram boards into such awkward spaces is a work of art to look at on its own.

I was really disappointed to hear "International Rectifier" 39 times and not once "International Rectumfier."

Never watched a video from this guy before, 5 seconds in "I wonder what part of Canada hes from"

Just sayin', but actually, your teardown just confirmed that this hair dryer is worth its price, unlike some audiophoolery equipment. Different question if that's really necessary, though.

I wouldn't say that it showed that it's worth it's price in my opinion, but it at least showed that it's somewhat close to worth it's price. I'd still value it at only like 250$ maybe. The motor wasn't that great, chassis wasn't aluminum (I personally think it would be a bad thing if it was though), and it didn't have any better performance than a much cheaper one.

Mshojat There's a lot of R&D in such a product, it's a totally new concept. The construction is state of the art. Not utterly serviceable, but who services old broken hairdryers anyways? They surely didn't cheap out in construction either, each part is purpose designed for its function, and performs just well as such. It's not Dysons fault that AvE doesn't know some basic motor driver concepts, as that was one of the main parts of ridicule in the video. The absolute hair drying performance has its limits in maximum temperature and airflow you want to expose them to, although some other random test of that fan I looked up after watching this video claims that the drying performance on actual hair under real conditions seems to be excellent and better than competitors. I do especially doubt the flow test in this video, as the whole "air multiplier" concept doesn't work if there is pressure build-up behind the fan. I wouldn't pay that much for a hair dryer neither, but that doesn't say much about the value of something. I also wouldn't buy expensive watches, jewelry or fancy designer clothing. But one can't doubt that there's a market, and they appreciate such unconventional and innovative products.

Marian Keller People didn't want to service hairdryers because they are cheap. But this one is not. So servicing it becomes a reasonable request. This isn't a whole new concept, it just hasn't been used for hairdryers before, because it makes for an expensive hairdryer. That doesn't necessarily make it a better hairdryer, though. But yes, there is a market for this hairdryer and Dyson didn't do a poor job.

I walked into Ulta and asked the salesperson what one item would you buy first if you had the money. Every girl in the place immediately said pointed to this hair dryer. My wife goes nuts about this hair dryer. She loves it! Sometimes in life, you have to ask that question and just pony up the money. I thought it was nuts. It is nuts. But, in a jam, that ends up being the very best question to ask when buying your sweetie sometime she would never get herself. And, it’s an awesome hair dryer.

The old imperial inch was replaced by the metric inch. They're not the same length. The metric inch was defined to be precisely 25.4mm. So the humour in his video works on multiple levels.

Yeah, confirmed huge Horror Fraught fan here. The quality of manufacture improves with every passing year, and if you know enough about using tools (and the engineering that goes into them), you can get a pretty good idea which ones are worth the money by going to the store and getting a little hands-on time. The other day I needed a hammer drill; Home Despot wanted $35 for 4 hours to rent one. Went to Horror Fraught and bought their basic model for $22 - 20% = $17.60 + tax = $18.50 out the door, or $1 more than half the price to rent one from the Despot. The thing is surprisingly skookum for sub-$20, and I got my holes drilled in under 5 minutes. With economics like that, right off the bat everything else is off the table for occasional-use tools. Even for heavy-use tools, the fractional replacement cost is going to make the HF options competitive in many cases - the Earthquake 1/2" impact wrenches come to mind. All I can say is I hope that fools continue to sneer at the place; if it ever develops a worthy reputation they might end up charging what everybody else does for the same tools.

This guy has a very noticeable combination of high intellect and genuine congeniality with a sort of frugal twang and a utilitarian / pragmatic charm... a lot of KZread’s self proclaimed smart people end up having this pitfall of being kind of snobbish or just reciting wrote facts and he has none of that. And a lot of KZread reviewers always just sound like they are putting on airs for the camera, acting faked and excited by the mere possibility of receiving and opening the box which doesn’t make for a very informed consumer. I have to applaud this guy for being so genuinely off the cuff funny and knowledgeable about manufacturing

Dyson at least used to have an excellent return policy.I remember hearing stories 10 years ago about people that did things like drop their vacuum cleaners down the stairs and Dyson replaced them no questions asked. It was one of the reasons I splurged and bought one. Of course, that was 10+ years ago.

As a hairdresser who was interested in it as an everyday tool. I THANK YOU! long time subscriber because I find you entertaining and educational... but this, this really ferk'n helps.

Not at the current price. It was nice to use. The quietness was a real bonus. I feel if I wait 6mths or post xmas sales and price drops a bit then maybe.

Given its apparent difficulty in being serviceable, combined with my understanding that it only has a consumer warranty, thus not covered for commercial use I'd be researching if others have found it stands up to the rigors of frequent use.

Thermal Ions Excellent point. The concern about heat-sensitive parts being near the heat generating parts as shown in this video make me question if it would stand up to the amount of use it would receive in a salon. It might be fine (designed) for the levels of home use, but not beyond that.

Dyson does put their stuff through heavy tests to make sure they last. That is generally putting them through industrial aspects of use. The fact is they take pride in the things they make unlike other companies take pride in the money they make off of the products. For $500 it is expensive but the testing and pride in the product to make sure the thing can handle the stresses of heavy use at least to me seems a bit worth it to get as an investment. I have found many things they surprise for cheaper but you tend to run into the landmines of products being cheap. Others are expensive and cheap by them adding a lot of crap to it. Dyson has that nice balance of good looking and efficient use of space and good durability of the products. Then again they kinda have to start the price high to get what they put into it, designing and start up building of the product, back out of it.

They probably went so far to make the plastic seem like metal so that it would have the premium feel of metal with the low low weight of plastic. The fact they did so well to make it almost impossible to tell it isn't metal is impressive really. I think you are paying 500 bucks for the insane engineering that went into making this thing and it looks like it would probably do a swell job and maybe even last a long time if nothing runs hot to the point it degrades the life of it. So yeah it's like buying a super car but for hair drying but um maybe not as much difference in performance over a standard affordable model? I can imagine this thing being WAY better in a salon setting where the stylist has to use the dryer all day long.

... and when all has been said, and done. What it comes down to is that, (as you mentioned) Dyson has a hell of a marketing division.

James Dyson is a British inventor, clever guy. His products are expensive but a lot of the profits go back into R&D. I remember his first break through came about forty years back, he invented a wheel barrow which used an inflated ball instead of the normal wheel. Gardeners with weak wrists, (don't judge) found them easier to use and they didn't bog down in soft ground. His next big break through was the bag-less vacuum cleaner, (now the industry standard.) The products are a bit Apple in image and price but Dyson as a company have invented or created many good products. Great video as usual.

Great video AvE! The pre-vanes are typical for industrial fans to reduce power to pre-spin the air for the vanes of the impeller; it should be in same direction. Check out any industrial fan manufacturer with a Variable Inlet Vane (VIV) fitment to the inlet of centrifugal fans. It will also reduce imposed vibration.

Well, this video will go nice with a few wobbly pops and a couple of tokes. Thanks as always AvE!

I don't get it, I build and fly RC models for a hobby and I'm quite into it, I use brushless motors ALL the time and I have never ever seen a brushless motor with 2 pins, they always have 3 and the speed controller shuts on and off 2 at a time to make it spin....Is it just me?

Oh my god you actually answered! Greeting from Cambridge, Ontario :) Yeah I don't get it either, but after a bit of shmoogling turns out computer fans run on the same design. Although computer fans are more understandable because they contain the speed controller inside the actual spinning unit. Did you happen to find any sort of circuitry inside the motor?

Almost all RC three phase brush less motors are sensorless. Three phase is a lot easier to control because you don't have to worry about it spinning up the wrong direction .

Back emf controllers are available from all the major makers. Having seen the video now I'm betting the motor design has the cogging set up so that it reliably starts up the right direction. It would probably be near impossible to get that motor to run backwards. Three phase RC motors can be driven either direction easily which isn't needed here.
