I rode both. The Honda suspension is much more comfortable, just better sorted. the Honda handles much better, although it is competing head to head with Harley, the Honda is not just another Harley clone is like the bolt. The Honda is a great all around motorcycle, just like the ones made in the 70's. I'm going with the Honda RS. Did I mention that the bolt engine digs into your legs in a very uncomfortable way? G Honda!

Agreed completely. I currently have a shaft drive Shadow Sabre 1100. I'm 5'8" and can flat foot the bike with no problem, and while it doesn't look "bobber-esque", it does look just like a Fat Boy. I'm good with that. Pull the fork covers and rear fender off to bob/chop it, or add bags, bat wing fairing and trunk for the bagger look. It's infinitely customizable, smooth, just fast enough for me, and bulletproof, engine-wise. I looked at the Bolt. Oddly enough, you can find TONS of them used around where I live. I went with a 2003 Shadow sabre.

I'm 5'2" and after years of riding a TALL DR250ES, where I had difficulty touching the ground even after the bike was lowered, I liked the feel of the Shadow. Shaft driven, no chains! The Bolt didn't have the feel I was looking for and really looked boxy to me. The salesman really pushed the Bolt, I wasn't havin' it.

I'm sorry Thomas, I was speaking of my own Honda Shadow Spirit. It's shaft driven. I've ridden my husbands Kawasaki Vulcan Custom 900, water cooled and belt driven, a time or two. For me, I'm 54, it's a little bit of bike to throw around. Knock on wood I haven't dropped it yet! But yes, they are attempting to compare apples and oranges.

Jesus, what is this? Are people in the US so stupid that they fall for this? Just embarrassing for Yamaha. Also, they are very different bikes. The Shadow RS is higher and more like a "standard bike" when the Bolt is more a bobber. This is just a cheap and shitty way to promote a product. Make an ad where you are talking about the Bolt - only - instead.

Beside from this beautifully written post (Honda Shadow rider here, newbie but enjoying it nonetheless) has no-one realised that this channel, as far as I know, is an official Yamaha channel? Why would a buyer, who, if they have any common sense, would choose from an unbiased stance, listen to someone is pretty blatantly bigging up their own product. This is a little disappointing from Yamaha honestly.

I agree. I too like the Bolt. I own both HD and metric. Checked a Bolt out yesterday. My pal Jeff Miller is the sales manager at Hale's Harley Davidson in Mansfield, Ohio. He's been selling HDs for 30 years and I've been owning them for 40 and we were both impressed with the Bolt. Kawasaki and Honda make great bikes. It all comes down to taste and price. It's not what you ride, it's about the ride.

OK, I gotta agree with some people here. I took the Bolt for a boot last week, and I loved it. I'm actually gonna buy it. Great power, great feel, and it is a Yamaha, so I know it will be reliable as all hell. However, this marketing campaign is whack. You do you gotta knock other bikes to try to make your bike seem impressive? It's already impressive as it is.

I ride a vstar 950. And the engine is the same as the bolt. It is terrific. There is not a shadow on the road that can stand next to it - especially not the 750. This is a comercial ,but I believe its realistic. The choice between these 2 bikes is clear, but for the money you can get a 950 and bob it out, rather than get the bolt bobber and decide later you wish you had some add-ons. I guess it is a little cooler and updated, the paint is nice and the breaks are cool. I like it

  • @LarryRickenbacker

Honda has four variants of the Shadow 750, with only one of them chain-driven. The Bolt does indeed score in many important areas, though, among them that rear disc. This clip succeeds in making it's point: The new Bolt certainly invites comparison with the Honda Shadow 750.

I've ridden since 1965. I've ridden (and built) Indians, H-Ds, Triumphs, and Hondas. This bike is a bit of alright (but it needs a bigger gas tank and more ground clearance). I rode a Bolt yesterday. It launches great and powers through the gears the way a good v-twin should. So what it it vibrates a bit? Despite the mirror blur, I can still make out what's behind me. I'd like to see someone enter a Bolt in something akin to The Iron Butt Rally. Ride safe.

At 8,000 dollars, I would put my money on that bike. for shorter riders, the Shadows are very refined and balaced, as you know. the Bolt is a decent bike but not necessarily better for everyone. Not for me, the Vulcan with its very sizable ethos, belt drive and floorboards at no extra charge will get my money.

You really need to compare the Honda Shadow Phantom. It's bobbed and much better looking than the RS. People looking to buy a Sportster will get one and will probably not be happy with a copy. The Phantom at least has fat fork tubes and a wider stance making it a better competitor. Remember folks in the 900cc range are not power hungry, they just want something big enough to pass traffic on the highway and looks better than the ugly 250-650cc bike they started on.

well I have a few Honda's, I like my Shadow Sabre 1100 when I go longer distance, my cb1100 is just plain fun, and will crush a bolt in any category, My wife drives a Shadow 750 Aero seat height with her new seat, height is 25 and 1/3 ", How low do you want to go? Bet her Aero will go farther on a tank of gas than yours (she gets like 60mpg) and she drives kinda rough. I also own a HD soft tail and Honda shadow vt600, but neither are in the same category. Money has a lot to do with the choice I see, I like the Vulcan 900 and expected to like the Bolt, But did not ..... just me ,we all have our own wants for looks and performance, not to get into maintenance. Chain and sprocket have advantages, if you don't like the gearing you can change it. (although 2 out of 3 of ower Shadows are shaft drive the 600 is chain and i changed it, like it much better now.)

Try comparing to the shadow spirit! Lower seat , lighter weight, handles so easy, turns into a corner effortlessly, sure not as much power, but your Yamaha has near 200 extra cc. The Honda gets better gas mileage. The spirit is shaft drive. The Yamaha's are great bikes too, but they need to do something about that last minute thought with the tail light placement. So ugly.

Ha. I went in and looked at a Bolt and it is a nice bike but on the price tag there was a series of fees listed as well. So, its 8,700 (r-spec) plus a bunch of fees, plus tax. So it will be 10,000 before you ride away on it.

Where are you located? I live in Southern California. I checked the list of fees, and 8,800 was the total include everything for R-spec. I didn't even ask for the extra discount yet.

This cheesy ad makes me NOT want to buy the Bolt. People seem to think the Honda is more comfortable and just all around a great little cruiser. Thanks for helping me decide on the Honda.

Take it with a grain of salt..its a Yamaha ad. Both nice bikes, the Yami is more of a bobber style.

This dude knows what's up, he's done his homework on the web and in the showroom haha. But seriously yamaha, you've got a great brand and I actualy like the bolt, but why do you need to try and bring other bikes down? Should you not be able to sell this bike on it's mirits and not on the flaws of other bikes? And you guys might want to try and find out what a bobber actually is, as neither of these bikes is one. And if you don't want to deal with simple suff like fixing your chain, go buy a car.

No Im going to wait and buy something bigger, probably a Harley. My next door neighbor just had a close one, some guy pulled a left into him. He was geared up so luckily he didn't get hurt. I told him to get as much as he can because stuff like that can come back and bite you in the ass over time.

Cleve Caulder The Bolt outperforms the 883 for the same price range though... I'm not going to pay just for the name, I'll pay for the better bike.
