Bolt Action Unboxing: British LDV Section

Ойындар

This week John and Gianna take a look at the British LDV Section for Bolt Action from Warlord Games.
The British Local Defence Volunteers were made up of those, such as the old and the young, who were ineligible to serve in the regular armed forces. Later known as the Home Guard, they are the inspiration for the comedy TV show "Dad's Army".
The set includes 10 figures who, without their uniforms, you can tell was a force made up of local tradesmen and shopkeepers.
Are you old enough to remember Dad's Army?

The "resistance" units you talk about are the GHQ Auxiliary Units formed by SIS in 1940. In practice they were administered as if they were LDV, but were usually deliberately formed from non-LDV personnel into 3 - 5 man cells whose affiliation was kept secret. They would have gone into hiding at the start of the invasion, in secretly constructed underground "hides", and then popped up to cause mayhem. It was these units who would have assassinated collaborators after their area was overrun by the Germans, the LDV then expected to be dead or captured. Who was on the lists is still mostly unknown, as few AU men ever talked about their role.

There was a steel ball bearing AP round for the standard shotgun. The assassination orders were typically given to the Auxiliary Units. They were a stay behind force who used the LDV/Home Guard as cover for much more extensive training in sabotage and other dirty tricks. Good unboxing - I would count the blunderbuss as an SMG in the first round of close combat - and as a club for subsequent rounds. ;)

There is a dark and serious side to Dad's Army, especially in the early episodes. See "the Battle of Godfrey's Cottage" for a good example where they think there is an invasion and dig in knowing that the chance of surviving is near nil.

I find it hard to picture how those assasinations wouldve panned out. Seems like your local defense shooting your their people would turn them against you and help the invaders more than anything.

d0nutwaffle Not really. The people on the list would people whom are VIPs, unknowing of the targeting. As well most would be expected collaboraters.

From experience with replicas, more like a shotgun which doesn't fire half the time. Mind you, my museum has an 1780's example where the stock cracked from a misfire, and it would be easy for an inexperienced user to over-charge the weapon, so go for it.

The LDV actually commandeered museum firearms to arm themselves. Episode 2 of Dad's Army season 1 is based on these incidents : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_Piece

A neat and interesting set. Actually there were a couple of islands in the channel that were under German occupation almost till the end of the war

This is true. My Grandad worked at Vauxhalls in Luton. Who made Churchill tanks I believe. The Works had its own Home Guard unit made up of workers. My Grandad being one!

The Allies always shamed Germany for the "Volkssturm". How could they be so cruel to use men too old & too young for military service? And then we have this. Totally different of course and not in the least comparable to the disgusting and horrible last line of defense that the hated enemy put up.
