We've always had it. It's called a WINDOW and it's super cheap, super reliable, and never has to be turned on. But Boeing decided that there's more money to be made by replacing the cheap and effective window with an overpriced electronic system that is not as good and far more likely to fail.

One of the most dangerous jobs in aviation. Right up there with landing a fighter jet on an aircraft carrier at night. So much can go wrong and these guys make it look east and routine.

The Boom sat up in the KC-10 a d it also had the ability to do both boom and drouge on the same sortie. frankly given military paltry budgets for up keep of weapons systems and lack of good caring maintenance personnel i can see a lot of problems with a remote system like this spread out over 200+ planes that are expected to last 20-30+ years.

No it's not. It's not as good as natural 3D vision you get by LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW. Which the boom operator can do on a KC-135 or KC-10. This 3D vision system is not as good, not as reliable, has to be turned on and depends on electrical power, and costs a lot more than a simple window.

what does the KC-97, KC-135 and the KC-10 all have in common? they all had a real boom operator in the back of the plane, flying the boom using his/her own eyeballs through the window

Yes, a vastly superior system, direct vision through windows. The camera and monitor based 3D vision system is nowhere near as good and it's prone to failure and it's a LOT more expensive. Modern thinking: Let's make a simple and cheap thing complex and expensive and add a whole maintenance program for it. Because PROFIT above all else.

All this 3D is great, so is the indirect viewing. What happens when something goes wrong with those electronics? PDL lights and the "little" light in the boom has been good enough for how many decades? It got us through the Gulf War in the 90's. My point is KISS. Something the aeronautics community is running as fast as they can from. They are making things needlessly complicated.

What if they are out over the Pacific or Atlantic with a half dozen fighters who need fuel?? And those fighters don't have the range to make it to a place to land? And there is no other tanker to get there? KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid. Plan for the worst. It sounds like you were never involved in maintenance

Ray Moore Wouldn't happen anyways because that is what aircraft carriers are for. Aerial refueling is either done in small bodies of water or land. If you want long range travel over ocean and seas, that is why we have carriers for. Cameras help us see at night unlike direct viewing. Also cameras is pretty reliable with today's technology and if you include frequent checkups. It isn't like direct viewing is impossible either since some of the early experiments with biplanes didn't have a direct viewing station at the tail nor did it have cameras and still managed to test aerial refueling successfully. Nothing ever changed, except we have the option to use a camera. 3D glasses is also an optional system. The tanker itself still have the standard camera. the 3D glasses just help enhance the performance. if the glasses malfunction they still can use the normal 2D camera screen onboard. B-17s got us pass WW2. But doesn't mean we shouldn't improve. By having an advantage with being able to refuel at night is an advantage with people that use direct refueling which have a lot harder time seeing.

The Air Force cannot land planes on a carrier, and what are the chances of a carrier being in the middle of the ocean? I worked on and flew on KC-135, we ferried planes across the oceans, or waited at specific areas for them to arrive. I am not against improvement, but i am very much against it for the sake of something new and shiny. I worked on some of the "New and Shiny" stuff and you would be surprised how long it takes to work the bugs out!

Wingspan (M) Length (M) Fuel Load (Te) KC-135 40 42 90 KC-46 48 50 96 KC-10 Extender 50 55 160 KC-30(MRTT) 60 59 111 So the KC-46 is barely 6.5% more capable than the 50 year old KC-135 and some 16% less capable than the KC-30 (MRTT) which would have been some 23% more capable than the KC-135. Way to go Yanks .... Given the USAF are not replacing on a one for one basis the extra size of the A330 MRTT is not an issue. If 'Little old England' can order 14 MRTTs in the same month the USAF ordered this Boeing heap of crap and we have had all ours in operation for some time that surely says how bad Boeing and the Senators they own have screwed the US Taxpayer. And since when did the USA ever believe 'smaller is better'?
