They're only winglets when it's taxiing on the ramp. The cooler part is watching them fold out into a (more) giant wing as the aircraft prepares for takeoff. Data point to ponder: the OG 747 went from first flight to EIS in 347 days. As of this writing, 18 May 2024, the average time from first flight of the 737 Max 7, 737 Max 10, and 777-9X, is 1,632 days, with no end to certification, or EIS, in sight or even predicted.

I wasn't aware that one was ever in the planning, agree the 747 obviously outsold the 380 by a huge amount, the 747 was released in a different era of air transportation, maybe if the 380 was released 10 years earlier it would of been more of a success. Can't remember the last time I saw a passenger 747 flying, I did however spot 4 A380 overflies on Sunday, didn't see a 777X despite its large order list, oh silly me it's not flying yet.

346 one of my favourites, aesthetically and comfort wise. SAA used to fly a 346 from JNB to CPT every Sunday morning, it would be my 2-hr commute back home after working up in Joburg. I would always make sure I was booked on the 346. It was a weekly highlight for years. Good times. Today my favourite is the 359 without any competition. My last flight was a marathon 16 hours on Delta from CPT to ATL and I swear it felt like 7 or 8 hours. Beautiful, graceful and sleek. The 777X and 787 just don’t deliver that same aesthetic sleekness, imo.
