(4K) Boeing 777-9 High Altitude Testing at Colorado Springs Airport

Welcome back to another video y'all! Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to see the 777X doing some high altitude performance testing at Colorado Springs Airport. The aircraft did a total of 8 patterns around the airport on Tuesday. It ended up staying the night at COS and then flew around a bit on Wednesday before heading back to Everett, Washington. I was fortunate enough to catch it doing its last 2 patterns around COS on Tuesday in addition to its landing and taxi. Thank you for watching and have a fantastic day!

  • @superskullmaster

    @superskullmaster

    3 ай бұрын

    @@RamSingh-cg2dn no, winglets are vertical or near vertical permanent wingtip devices. They stay in that position always. These are folding raked wingtips which are only vertical on the ground to make space at space restricted airports. They are NEVER vertical in flight. These are a first for commercial aviation. Typically you only see folding wings in Navy aircraft.

  • @ColoradoAviation

    @ColoradoAviation

    No what I mean by high altitude performance testing is that they came to COS because it’s 6,187 feet above sea level. At this altitude takeoff/go around performance is reduced so they are required to do this testing to get the plane certified. Other manufacturers like Airbus do the same thing with their planes

  • @lenmetallica

    @lenmetallica

    It’s a good question. I have followed the journey to certification of the 777x for some time. The next critical step is for the FAA pilots to fly the 777x to verify a range of factors. Perhaps the FAA is dragging the chain so to speak given their own problems with previous certifications.

    That’s some high altitude, must be what, 500 feet?

    No what I mean by high altitude performance testing is that they came to COS because it’s 6,187 feet above sea level. At this altitude takeoff/go around performance is reduced so they are required to do this testing to get the plane certified. Other manufacturers like Airbus do the same thing with their planes

    Not really sure about those folderble winglets, it might become a major problem for airlines Down the line.

    I could see them having some mechanical issues in the future but I think the benefit of the space they save out weighs the possible problems

    Planes have been folding their wings since WW2. This isn't anything new in the world of aviation. Plus there are always contingencies in place in case something unintended happens.

    The folding tip is the most redundant waste of money I have ever seen put on an aircraft

  • @iamLODD

    Its not a waste of money, folding the wingtips changes the 777X from a Category F aircraft to a Category E. This change is incredibly important because most major airports worldwide are Category E airports. If the 777X remained a category F aircraft (the same category as the Airbus A380), it would severely limit the number of airports it can fly to.

    It would not be able to park at gates already used by 777/787 if it didnt have folding wingtips
