you have every right to be pleased, that looked perfect, landings at carca are always usually a lot harder, pre runway extension in 2007 they all seemed good , now its rare to have a comfortable landing, ive seen passenger items fly all over cabin on landing, usually phones lol ,

Haha i landed there on a small plane (dr400) as part of nav training on a windy day, great pleasure to watch a creamy stable bird do the exact same downwind 10 entrance that i did! Thanks!

Epikur Epikur Hi, thanks for watching. The checklist is done. It was started just after the landing gear went down, and completed as we were turning onto final approach. The flight deck is very noisy, and unfortunately I had no way to record the radio which is probably why you couldn’t hear it.

M Murray ah yes very true! I just flew in a 737 yesterday back home. Is it true that Boeing are more of a pilots plane than Airbus? As in Boeing have more pilot input/ more manuel to fly than Airbus?!!

Great question! I count possibly say which is more of a pilot's plane! But it is certainly true that the Bowing philosophy to design is to make it much more manual. The Boeing has cables which run from the control column and pedals which directly move the controls surfaces, whereas Airbus aircraft use sophisticated computers and a small joystick - or side stick - to control the aircraft. There's no direct linkages from the pilots to the control surfaces in an Airbus. Knowing how much my computer freezes and crashes, I know which design I prefer ;)

@@mmurray3478 That's why I feel the safest being on a 737, you won't have to loose control if all systems fail, like hydraulics, electrics, or electronics.

It's not very clear in the video : did u puy the autopilot in alt Hold before setting missed approche altitude? We also saw you correcting your heading while turning base. Can you explain why

homasas Hi. Thanks for your comment! The altitude was set to the minimums as we were descending on the ILS, and as a result, when it got to that altitude, you’re right, it goes into Alt Hold. So we didn’t put it into Alt Hold really, it does that by itself. As to the heading, we were flying with the autopilot engaged, so used to heading bug to initially steer the aircraft. Even if we were manually flying, we move that round to wherever we’re pointing. That way in this case, if we need to go around while on finals (after turning base) we can go straight into Heading Select mode without having to turn the bug all the way round again.

Was this part of training or is it normal procedure for landing on runway 28?? Carcassonne is a beautiful city.

Been in here many times, this is best approach as you get a wonderful view of the city , and yes it is normally the landing direction .

which airport was this and what was the runway length?

Why did they have to go through all of those turns when that Airport was always just straight ahead in the beginning of the video, especially when there wasn't any other traffic?

I've flown to Carcassonne many times (as a Ryanair passenger) but most of the landings have been less smooth than that! I'm actually now pretty scared of the whole 'circle to land' thing. Terrifies me!

M Murray landed here just last week quite a lot of turbulence and the approach was more of a turning then usual great to see it from the front my mum lives here so go a lot

Does anyone ever land in Carcassonne without a large thud? Is it runway length or some other reason, would love to hear any comments.

Hi. Thanks for your comment. I thought that was a relatively smooth landing!! But yes, most landing are firm at Carcassonne, shall we say? This is because it's a tiny little runway, so you really have to make sure you land within the touchdown zone, otherwise the runway runs out pretty quickly! So if you mess up trying to get that smooth landing and float down the runway you have to go around, and it just ends up being a whole lot more work! Especially after a circle approach because the go-around must be made into the direction of the approach, which is the opposite of the landing direction. Hope this answers your question!?

Actually on second viewing it does seem a lot smoother than most I have experienced. Know a lot of the Ryanair skippers and have viewed the ldg many times from up front and as you say , the runway does look small at a mile out. Cheers for reply.

Actually I prefer firm landings at Carcassonne. I once experienced a kiss landing there and we went around cause we were floating and missed the touch down zone. The second touch down was firm but on the spot.

always a hard thud, well more so recently used to be a softer landing, now with the bigger planes its a difficult landing for a passenger at least,. i dont look forward to it at all, but reassuring to read what M Murray has shared here, thanks

I think you mean the trim wheel. You get used to it after a while! Most modern airlines don't have it anymore, but the 737 is an old machine! So it still exists. Thanks for watching!

Yes sir, always on a normal landing. Otherwise it's going to be a very firm landing as the normal descent rate is about 750ft per minute, which is about 4 metres per second!

killerbox 04 Haha, no problem! It was there! A smaller one than normal perhaps. It's a very short runway at Carcassonne, so getting it on the ground is more important than a soft landing! Although it must be said, that was actually not as bumpy as it looked!! ;)

When you retract them up they are held up by hydraulic pressure When you put it to off it is the held up by a mechanical linkage so the hydraulics systems tear will decrease.

Derek Newbury Hi. Great question. The flight deck is actually quite a noisy environment, and the microphone of the humble iPhone just wasn’t able to pick it up. The communication at this stage of flight is essentially a rehearsed script. We don’t discuss anything unless something unusual happens. This is because we’ve already discussed what will happen while we are in the cruise. At this point, we know what we’re going to do, so we simply do the basics. The pilot flying (me in this case on the right) asks for things such as the gear down and flap settings, and the pilot monitoring (the captain on the left) does it and says what he’s doing. He will also complete the checklist before landing. And that’s all that’s required basically!

Oh, I see. In Carcassonne there is a lot of GA traffic and terrain around which makes a circle preferable there. I also believe (although I'm not certain) that the city prefers this to a visual from the other end due to noise. So that's what we elected to do on the day.

milton fonseca Thanks for watching. I could have done, however it’s a complicated approach, and the procedure is to use the automatics until completing the base turn. The automatics make the approach easier, and more likely to go right since they reduce workload.
