Bobwhite Quail

Ойын-сауық

This little Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) dropped by and was nice enough to sit right directly outside my window putting on a show while I videoed it.

Haven't heard that call in many years. Used to hear those birds down here on the coast in the morning :(

Yeah, the populations are dwindling so it's not nearly as common as it used to be. One reason I could not resist capturing this video when I had the chance. Thanks Jeff!

Excellent, relaxing. I had no idea that the BobWhite was a member of the quail family. Nice music at the end of the video, too !

Thank you! This was the closest I have ever been to one, and probably the closest I ever will be. Apparently birds just can't see through window pane, because I couldn't have been much more than 10 feet from it. Glad you liked the closing music. This one seemed to scream for something a little more tranquil for a closing than what we normally use.

The goldenrod was a nice background. I suspect the large increase in hawk and coyote numbers has something to do with the quails decline. Same goes for the ring necked pheasant.

The goldenrod worked out, but I assure you it was not intentional. I am given to understand that the decline in numbers is largely due to loss of habitat.

Thank you! This relatively rare thing happened, and as chance would have it the camera was near at hand, so I could not resist capturing the moment in our new place to share it. Often as not, the spontaneous moments are the best videos.

Well, as chance would have it, we had thrown out some bread I made that got away from me before we could eat it all, and I think it may have been picking away at the crumbs. Maybe I just need to bake another loaf of bread and throw it in the yard! LOL!

Fascinating birds and a very rare sighting. Very sad that we can't figure out exactly what is causing the decline. The last one I saw was about 15 years ago when it hopped up on a fence post. The last one I heard was over 5 years ago. I used to call them in all the time at my grandmother's when I was a yute.😁

We still hear them, at least here in Michigan, quite regularly, but almost never see them, so this was indeed a rare occasion. Perhaps since we do hear them quite frequently it will return.

@@Realunitedstates I'm in Tennessee and the population has declined greatly. Have you ever been walking in the woods or fields and stirred up a covey? One of the scariest things that can happen to a person.😁

Not an entire covey, but I have on occasion accidentally flushed individual birds, and yes, it has scared the crap out of me. But it all happens so fast I have no idea if is was a quail, or grouse, or even something large like a pheasant. Just that a super excited and comparatively large bird has exploded out of the grass where seemingly moments before there was no bird.

Wow, nobody has mentioned Rosco in a long time. I suppose this does remind one of that. I am okay, as is Bev, and I am sure I will find a new job eventually. We remain busy all of the time anyway. Hope you are doing well were you are. Thanks!

have heard these frequently but never seen one so dark brown before. Have you got bird feeders set up to attract these? You look like you have a good setting for attracting them anyways :)

No, no bird feeders, just a backyard that hasn't been mowed for five years while I was in DC. LOL! It's our own private wildlife preserve.

Yeah I have seen folks do that. Sort of funny to watch. Can never be sure if the bird is answering, or just continuing with his song.
