Ohio was once in Connecticut

Ойын-сауық

Technically it was only part of Ohio, and as the ownership changed that part became the Connecticut Western Reserve.

Hey thanks so much! I really wish I had more time when I was in Ohio, but it seems like I'm always in a hurry. It's been quite a while since I was in Cleveland, though I pass nearby periodically. Hope we will get the chance to visit at some point.

Another fun fact about the area (native Clevelander here) the western part was called the Firelands, named because land was given to colonists whose homes were burned out by the British during the US Revolution.

That original land parcel was bananas. I didn't realize Connecticut was one of the states that had started out with such radically different territory/size. I thought the east coast above the Carolinas(with exception of Virginia), and that north of Washington area, except for some small border disputes, had been mostly all the same from the start. Connecticut being wild like that is a real surprise!! The house behind you looks so much like the house in Mr.Blandings Builds his Dream House! I know it's not super uncommon style, maybe the light and camera angle did me in! Hope you and Bev had a more chiilled time filming this than Myrna Loy and Cary Grant had in the movie ! 😘

There were a lot of things about land grants in the colonial period that seem strange given today's understand of geography. Seventeenth century, knowledge or understanding of the physical nature of the world was pretty limited. Not to mention that there was an arrogance about kings and their ideas that we have no current frame of reference for. Claiming and granting huge tracts of land was, they felt, a birthright. By those standards, we own both the moon and Mars. :-)

I've long wondered how Case Western Reserve University got its name. I'm sure this is connected somehow.

  • @Realunitedstates

It seems like a reasonable deduction. and it is in fact exactly where the name came from as one of the preceding or founding institutions was Western Reserve College.

Yeah, and the map does help a lot because my description/explanation was a little vague. So I am glad this sparked some additional research for you!! We were actually back in Streetsboro, well, this morning actually, but the weather was not conducive to doing any video, as it was pretty cold and rainy and windy. Maybe next time. Turns out there are a LOT of interesting things in Ohio that we might like to video.

I'm going to go back in time and become a land speculator and take the name Lenin. That way there will be a Leningrad Ohio, and then Paul will do a video pointing out how strange it is that Leningrad Ohio was once Leningrad Connecticut before there was even a USSR, not knowing that he started the whole thing. ..... I guess that we don't see this sort of thing is proof that time travel is not possible. .... Saturday evening musings....

  • @Realunitedstates

Well, here's the rub, as I understand it, if time travel IS possible, the Probability of an event that would cause a paradox is essentially zero, according to the Novikov self-consistency principle. Yes, the rumors are true, I really am a nerd.
