Bobby Dall and Ratt's Lay it Down?! (more than one way to skin a Ratt!)

My alternate way of playing Lay it Down and a few of my views of performing in the tribute scene in L.A.

Now if they would give me a chance to let me jam with them sit down and learn it I would but by myself my mind would not do it I'm trying the best I can by myself but still it's not good enough I wish it was better but you do what you got to do

The part that grabbed me the most in this video, is where you talk about the guitar players in the crowd and said" I'm the one on the stage" referring to players who are too critical. That statement is very true and powerful. A lot of proficient players who can play note for note end up not playing in bands or live. Either because they can't gel with other players, lack the Grove or right attitude, or are simply afraid of shitting the bed and being harshly critiqued themselves, because that's what they do. This video is caulked full of awesometisity!!

I grew up through the 80’s Metal era and I miss it. It’s great to see some of those bands making a comeback . You play it the the way you feel is comfortable to you. No one should criticize someone’s else’s guitar skills. The difference is, they are down in the audience and you are on stage. There’s a reason for that. It’s easy for someone to watch and say, he’s not playing it right. Keep doing what you do. Keep on Rockin, 🎸🔥👍

This is so cool to see. I'm completely self-taught and when this album came out, there was no KZread or anything to show me how to do it and I learned it exactly that way! In the second and third fret position because that's the easiest way to do it and it made the most sense to me. Most natural. Every time I played that for a friend, they look at me strangely like what? Lol.. I'm so glad you posted this, I feel vindicated.

Ha, man you have amazing wisdom! It’s rare to see someone just lay it bare and call it out with such raw honesty - excellent way to describe it all. And the best part, YOU get to play all that music LIVE that we enjoy so much! Must be insanely fun. Loved your version, too, can’t wait to try it - that Warren chord stretch is tough!

  • @TwentytenS4B8

Explained like a true musician. I think a lot of players forget about octaves and that they are in multiple places on the neck. I put up a cover video of this song and I always played it like Warren did. But as you stated, even Warren doesn't play it the same every show he does. To be honest, I totally forgot about that other position on the neck where it can be played and it's literally the same notes, same chords, just different position. I can see where playing it that way makes it much easier to sing as well. Also, one other key thing said here is make it your own. I humbly agree.

I agree. You can put way too much time into learning note for note for the 1% that might notice. Like someone else said, those of us in the old school crowd didn't pick up music videos that show how to play stuff. We had to play everything by ear. We didn't slow it down to learn it either. Just get it as close as you can and try to have fun with it. Life is hard enough. By the way, playing something in an easier position is actually smarter, in my rule book.

Stumbled across your video kind of by accident. I’m glad I did. Very cool stuff. Good for you brother. I play in a GnR tribute band in Dallas called Rocket Queen DFW. You’re always gonna have the haters, but you’re always going to have the chicks too. And that’s what I’m after the chicks. Keep doing what you’re doing bro. Cheers

I did the same thing when I would learn a cover. I would find my own revised and simplified way of achieving an 80% repro. It helps when playing live, because sometimes you have to clear your plate a little to make sure you don't fail. And I learned a lot about guitar coming up with easy alternatives. I like what you did!

Man that’s great I’ve struggled with the original version and I got to be honest I think your short cut actually sounds better it sounds fuller and sharper and cutting!

I second the Eddie Van Halen comment. It’s cool that you can improvise on songs, because I have to do that also on different positions. No Rules in Rock n Roll🤘🏻
