I remember going to his house with my then girlfriend sometime in the mid 2000s. She was actually friends with his daughter Marion, and we'd just moved into a new unfurnished apartment and needed furniture. Anyways, we drove up to his house in the Hollywood hills to pick up this red futon they wanted to get rid of. As a guitar player, I was really into 80's rock but actually didn't know all that much about Ratt (I was brought up in the UK) but had an awareness that Warren was basically considered to be almost on par with Eddie Van Halen. He answered the door in a bathrobe, and we'd interrupted him practicing for his new tour with Extreme. He was sitting playing through his guitar parts whilst recording them, and then he'd listen to them back and then write down whatever score he'd give himself on a scale of 1-10 to gauge which songs needed more practice. I remember there being Japanese koy fish painted on the walls in true 80s rock star style lol. Anyways, the one moment I'll always remember is when he invited us in, he turned to me and said "Do you want a Coke?" I said "Yes please", and he went and got me one from his fridge. He then turned away back towards his couch to continue practicing, and I turned and said to my girlfriend - "WARREN DEMARTINI JUST GOT ME A COKE!"

My fave riff from the 80's!

34:10 - "I would advise NOT trying to do this professionally because it can be miserable" - that breaks my heart. For me, Warren is up there with Eddie, Randy and his own personal heroes. He's humble and deserves the recognition any guitar god gets. I wish RATT had been a different band - Pearcy was the visual focus but he can't carry legendary status - too much ego, not enough talent. Warren needs to be among legends. Definitely one of my heroes.

Pearcy is a decent guitarist in his own right, besides being RATT's primary songwriter. Kinda like Nikki Sixx, he deserves more credit than he gets.

Way underrated b/c he played in a "hair band". When everyone else in the 80's was trying to out shred each other, Warren was the only guy who started playing deeper, and deeper in the pocket. Beautiful searing vibrato, fluid phrasing, and always played w/ feel and emotion. One of my favs, always has been.

True genius. Has a difficult time explaining why he's so good. The fact that he picked up a guitar at 15 and was playing for RATT in Los Angeles four years later is shocking. He's so laid-back about it!

I knew he was influenced by Uli, because his solo tone sounded like if Uli played earlier 80's west coast style, also gotta wonder if Vai was influenced by Uli's bar technique or they both just came up with similar bar stuff independently. Always wondered if Randy listened to Bebop deluxe I know Ed did but Ed listened to a lot music that wasn't really mainstream in America like early holdsworth, an budgy as well as Cream wired era Beck The Who an the often unsung but really influential ZZTop. It's interesting to hear how early 80's late 70's bands took their influences and expanded on them to create something new.

Thank God when I was learning guitar growing up my dad showed me guys like Warren , Jake E Lee, Nuno, Reb Beach, George Lynch etc. The music I play isn't really 80's sounding at all but I definitely owe a lot of my technical ability to the the influence of these guys. Thanks Dad!!

Warren’s solo phrasing on those Ratt tunes are epic.

DeMartini has one of the best sounds in all of guitar, any genre. Textbook rock n roll. The 80s were probably the best years for music as far as wide variety of originality.

Warren and Robbin Crosby (RIP) made such delicious riffs together.

Damn. By far the most I've ever heard Warren speak. Awesome stuff.

Wrong. Yngwie was the Best yet many people didn't know or heard his music while everyone heard EVH and mistakenly claimed he was the best. I agree that Lynch was better than Warren. But here's a list of who were superior at the time with little mention at all in the mainstream. Yngwie, Tony MacAlpine, Akira Takasaki, Paul Gilbert, Greg Howe, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker, Shawn Lane...

One the best of all time. Fantastic sense of rhythm. Some of the slinkiest solos ever recorded. In his prime, he was absolutely devastating. Definitely my favorite guitarist of the hair metal era.

I always dug Warren, and RATT, but my little brother was a RATT freak! We caught a show in BOISE with Autograph & Bon Jovi opening for RATT. Yea it was mid 80s. (Yes, killer show indeed.) My brother passed away in 2012. Thanks for the interview. I'm glad we found it.

Wow...what a difference. How time and maturity can change a person. I met Warren back stage back in the early 80s at the this club in Reseda, CA. It was in the valley called the Country Club. It was a happening club back in the 80s in the valley. It was like the Whiskey or Troubador of the Valley. Everyone played there. Warren was a really shy quiet young dude back in the day. He didn't say much, but now after 30 something years seeing him here in this video, he is not afraid to speak. Great to see you Warren and still rocking after all these years!!

Gmlasm the country club is still there. Although its a church now. Another cool place was the golden west ballroom in downey. It is still there also. However it is a church also. The country had the best sound. I lived in orange county it was a drive. I was very fortunate that i made it home from that place. My main hang out was the starwood. To set the record straight i was there to see y&t and caught motley. Vince is full of shit no fight took place. It was also the first time i sat upstairs in the vip section. It was so small and the bar well you know if you ever been. Also sorry but the cru would have got their ass kicked. It wasnt the band it was the bouncers back then they were some bad ass dudes and they'd kick the shit out of you

I graduated in 1990, saw Ratt 5 times on the Invasion Of Your Privacy & Dancing Undercover tours. Amongst all the guitar players of the 80's Warren really stood out. Ratt had a unique hook to their music, along w/ Warren's bluesy flavor in his solos that just made it so slick. If there was a mount Rushmore of 80's guitarists, DeMartinni & Lynch would be on mine for sure!

I love that he gives Robin credit. It’s really cool because many other guitarists would have kept all the credit.

I seen Ratt and Poison at Hara Arena , Dayton , Ohio 1986. I was on the right side and i still have the metal pick you threw me , huge influence on me as I was only 15 and had been playing since i was 12. Your sound is as recognizable as Eddie's.

I was lucky enough to get a pick from Warren one night - very thick too........later that night I kept bragging to my buddies and one of them said "" lemme show you somthing - went to his room and came out with a metal pick he had gotten from Warren at some show -- and I'm like (( ok, alright - in a Denzel voice ))...........ok -- I shut my mouth for awhile.........Couple a hours later I'm trying to buy it off him.........good times !

I saw Ratt eight times in total and three times from the front row. At the Savannah, Ga show in ‘87 I caught one of Warren’s stainless steel guitar picks and it stayed in my wallet until last year when some asshole stole the wallet. It had been with me all over the world and even during Desert Storm. Still bums me out that it’s gone, especially now that my grandson is taking guitar lessons. Keep rockin WD…your sound and style epitomized the era…much love!

Ratt used to hang out in Pacific Beach! Warren being an old school surfer puts him high on my cool dude list. Hence, why he is so chill.

When I was 13; before internet.. Ratt and other bands seemed larger than life! I only had magazines and records to stare at. SUCH a great thing to see this!

Way Cool Jr., which he does toward the end here, was one of my absolute favorites which also demonstrates or combines so many things in Warren's playing. A well rounded player like Jake E. Lee.

My favorite member of Ratt! I remember voting for him in circus magazine best guitar player!

Warren is my favorite guitar player of that era and one of my all-time favorites. I had to opportunity to talk with him at NAMM several years ago at an after-party and he was incredibly gracious. It's pretty cool when the poster on your wall comes to life and is as cool as you imagined! Thanks for the great music and great playing Warren. You inspired a generation!

Always loved Warren. One of the only players from that era that never ascended. All his playing is descending riffs. Probably why his phrasing is so creative.

Loved Maiden and AC/DC in my early teens. Then saw the wanted man video on TV. When Invasion came out I bought it. Made me take up guitar. Addicted to this guys playing ever since. Wore out my vinyls in the lean years. Nice to hear him tell a story. Puts everyone's journey in perspective

Warren is an amazing guitarists. one of my Hero's along with EVH Randy Rhodes George Lynch etc.

I got a guitar for Christmas when I was 12 in 1982. I tried to learn some chords and even plugged in to my stereo. Lol I lost interest pretty quickly and sold my guitar. I saw Ratt open for Billy Squier when I was 14. It changed my life. Warren blew my mind. Been playing ever since. Thank you Warren DeMartini.

Hearing Warren play makes me realize his part in Ratt which i really pretty much knew but this is so cool to see and hear and man dose this bring back the best of memories of my youth as a guitar player myself I've always paid the most attention to the guitar player's in all the 80's band's and one thing i learned is the guitar player's in those bands were up against very high standards mainly set by EVH and that caused some of the greatest players in history as far as being virtuosity in a commercial way which EVH also set high standards for but the majority of the 80's band's were definitely holding their own and Warren De Martini definitely was one of my favorites for sure.

Hey Warren DiMartini, it's Ritchie "Rooster" Brubaker. Man, you got somewhere, from listening to us in the parking lots, then going to my folks house to listen to the Yardbirds! Warren's one of my favorite guitar players, but now you get a sense of why Robbin and Stephen did all the interviews.

Many years ago I snuck into the soundcheck for a Randy Rhoads tribute concert at the Shark Club in Los Angeles. It was a "who's who" of the the shred elite and one of the greatest hours of my life. I watched in awe as the greats put the songs together. Warren performed Over the Mountain with George Lynch. It was as epic as it sounds. Warren never looked "comfortable" or relaxed in soundcheck or the final performance. It certainly wasn't for a lack of skill of course, he just really cared about getting it "right." Doing justice to the song. You could see the concentration and commitment to detail. In the final performance. Awe inspiring to say the least. I was able to buy him a Heineken and eventually get him to sign by tab book for Out of the Cellar. What I really want to say here is how INSANELY kind and humble he was to me. He was just so profoundly different than some of my other heroes that were there. No one was a jerk. They were all under pressure, and very few would have more than a few run throughs. But he took the time and was genuinely nice and patient with my dumb asked a million times questions. He remains one of my all time favorites. And while my released music is light years away from his in style, I always keep him in mind when I relate to other musicians, especially in the studio. I will simple confirm what so many of you who have met him know: Warren DeMartini is a special guy. A world class player and songwriter, but more importantly a real gem of a human being... best to everyone.

I was in attendance for this. Was fantastic. Got to ask Warren a question about the songwriting process. Such a cool guy.

I talked to Uli once about the lack of bass in his Marshalls. He was so nice! I've never talked to Warren but I've always loved his playing!!

I've watched this video several times and it never gets old. Warren tells the same story from his humble beginnings the same way it happened for many of us. "Why is it tuned this way?", "play through your stereo" and "No plan" is about as original as it gets. I don't think anyone else could have told this story that we're all pretty much personally familiar with in such a way as Warren DeMartini did in such a refreshing way in this video. No matter how old I get I will always love and respect this man for his awesome work that he has put out over the years. God bless you Warren! 😀

Man, this is so long overdue, I am thrilled that Warren is still playing, I have been a HUGE fan from way back. His playing style definitely qualifies as a signature sound, -no doubt about it. I love all the old Ratt stuff, and REALLY look forward to the G4 stuff that should be coming out soon! GO WARREN! I love your style man, -what a laid back guy!

I was born and raised is Los Angeles. I remember the RATT EP coming out and buying it ( I still have it) I became a fan and still am to this day. Warren De Martini Rules!

He wrote great riffs. I saw them back in the day, and their stage show wasn't that great. That bass players ballerina moves were embarrassing to watch, the rhythm section wasn't anything to write home about. The singer's pitch was all over the place. But Warren and Robin's playing really stood out.Those two guys in a better band would have been huge. But I still buy everything that Warren plays on, I love his writing and his playing.

I listened to ratt because the songs were great,warrens leads were great and it was cool.piercy had killer vocals on those studio albums and what they did personally in the 80s didnt matter because we didn't know about it,no internet,no foul. any other guitar player,drummer or singer and warren wouldn't be sitting here

Such an underrated guitar player he actually has such incredible fret skills and a very different technique. He always puts in just the right amount of lead to the song.

They blew Billy Squire away on that tour. I remember their energy and when Billy came on stage he just stood in front of the microphone barely moving. It didn't help my high and I fell asleep in my seat. Next thing I remember the staff was shaking me yelling"are you alright"? They thought I was ODing, lol.

I was there for this - great night, some awesome playing!... Even won a guitar! (The one at 13:10!) Then Ratt played the next night at a local venue - great show of course! Thanks Music Zoo for putting this together!!

Warren was always a very humble person from the very beginning days of Ratt. I know because I was fortunate to know the band before they ever cut their first ep . In fact for me it was Warrens presence that made RATT what it was ,it certain wasn’t because of stellar vocals which even steve admits lol.

Warren & George were my 2 biggest influences... Warren's tone tho.... It's timeless

I met Warren backstage at the Universal Amphitheater in maybe 1999 when they played with Cinderella and Poison and I’ll never forget it. Tom Morello from rage against the machine was backstage chatting up a storm. And Warren was sitting on the couch in the back just chilling quietly. And people were standing around Tom and I walked right by him not caring at all and went straight to Warren Demartini. And he stood up quickly and I said hi my name is Michael and he said hey my name is Moore nice to meet you and shook my hand. He was so sincere I couldn’t believe it. I finally met Warren who had been listening to for years. I just couldn’t get over how gracious and kind he was. Thank you Warren.

Warren plays with such feel man he's awesome!! A humble dude too

Warren is one of the greatest players of that era, saw him live with Ratt in Pittsburgh, once in 1989 and once in 1999, both times he exuded a laid-back, rock star cool and a Joe Perry meets George Lynch Vibe. His playing has been a huge influence on me, and he, along with George Lynch, are easily the finest of the post- Van Halen Hard Rock guitarists. Really enjoyed this!

The '89 show was at the AJ Palumbo center, the City to City to tour, and then I caught them in '99 at the Metropol, supporting their self-titled album. Great memories!😊

Ratt EP, Cellar and Invasion are the best. But I like all Ratt and Pearcy stuff. After Robbin King Crosby left, it was hard to Ratt keep the chemistry

Warren took my final layaway payment on my first guitar at a small guitar shop in Chula Vista CA in the mid to late 80s. I think it was 88. The guitar I got was a Charvel Model 2 in red. He signed it on the back of the headstock and my receipt. That was a great day

1987----I went and bought my first guitar, saved up all my lawn mowing money and allowance when I was a kid because of Warren, he is a badass still

Tone is awesome even in this Q&A setting.

I'm 57 and when I play my "hair metal" music to my kids, my daughters don't care but my youngest son (9), comes with the whole package! His musicality is OVER THE CHARTS! He doesn't know but I'm grooming him to be a guitar player even though he likes the drums! 🤣

Warren's Frenchie was one of the most recognized guitars of all time.

Ratt is one of my all time faves. I’m a definite 80’s child. That music era was the best. When he played Lay it Down I was ready to rock!

Listening to Warren play his parts of those memorable songs, it showcases 2 things; his incredible talent...and that of Robbin Crosby's accompaniment.

Warren DeMartini is,was and never will be underrated..........he is loved and idolized by millions of guitar players world wide

One of the best. His playing is way cooler and amazing than many big names. One of my fav guitarists of all times. \m/

Absolutely.. dude has an excellent vibrato and killer rhythm/lead chops and humble too..

To me Warren was the only member of Ratt that was really into the musical aspect of things-not just doing it to 'get chicks' in a band that I think he really carried musically. Watching videos of Stephen Pearcy and Bobby Blotzer by comparison, Warren seems really down to earth and realizes times have changed and isn't chasing the glory days. Relaxed, composed, sober, intelligent.

Was a treat to meet him at Namm in 09, was hanging with Carlos carvazo

Omg...i was into pop music as a little girl..loved Duran Duran! My brother and sister were into rock music. That's how i knew who Ratt was back in 84'. Never told anyone but i was 12 and secretly had a crush on De Martini. Lol!!!

An underrated & underappreciated guitarist.

I remember in highschool having tons of pictures on my bedroom wall of Ratt.One of my favorites rock bands.saw them 3 times in Boston.Warren still has that grove n sound.cool video thank you for showing us.

I am so glad that I came across this! I saw him live and man, what a tone, fluidity, phrasing! He"s the total package as a guitar player! One of the absolute best! I loved 80's guitar playing it truly elevated guitar playing and Warren was one the best! Miss those days!

I adore him since around 1985, always a huge influence in rock guitar playing and style, his early mixolydian and dorian licks and of course his phasing where something brand new beside all the other "pentatonic shedders" in those times Ratt´n´Roll forever :) ...

I've always thought Ratt had some of the coolest riffs out of all those 80s 'glam metal' bands. Then of course you have Warren doing some of the coolest solos. He's almost like Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme. Also, Vito Bratta of White Lion. Listen to the solo of the song "Wait" and you will be blown away. You will listen to it over and over again wondering how that guy isn't considered one of the best ever.

Warren is awesome I wish he would tour today he is absolutely one of my favorite guitarists of the 80's he is underrated and in my opinion he is in the conversation with all the 80's guitar greats!

I love DeMartini, he's very creative! Ratt is one of my favorite bands!

A home stereo with a Mic jack and headphone jack was my first amp!! No distortion but it was electrified...

Somehow I figured out how to use a cassette deck recorder/player as my first overdrive. If you cobbled up a way to plug your 1/4" into the record input, cobbled a way to get a 1/4" out of the monitor, and then put your finger into the deck to make it think you were recording with a recordable cassette - press record&play, then adjust the VUs to your likeness. As I remember this was the closest I ever came to getting the "Limelight" sound. You still had to plug this into an amp, but didn't matter what kind.

This was 1983. I later got proper amps and pedals (I guess)... but NOTHING ever sounded like that.

my first guitar heroe back in the 80`s

I've been a fan of his since the mid-'80s and this is the first time I've ever heard him speak. Seems like a really cool, down-to-earth guy. Such an underrated guitarist.

He's so humble.... He looks like that shy 18-years-old guitarist in my neighborhood with an incredible talent who would always blow a 16-years-old me out and who I would always admire. The Lay It Down intro! Wow. Out of the Celler album is packed with so much talent, energy, and spark. His razor-sharp, lightening-fast and melodic solos still give me an electrical shock. Whatever happened that made him feel "miserable", I wish him all the luck. He's got so much talent; he needs to put it out more. Please come to Japan again and let us hear you play your guitar.
