I agree with everything folks have said about Bobby Brown's exceptional talent and immense contribution to R and B and Hip Hop, and the dozens of acts that came up because of the path he cleared for them. However, what many don't realize is that Bobby Brown is greater than all that. A few years ago, his bandmate, Johnny Gill said on an interview that Bobby has not achieved his true potential and that those who know him well were always expecting him to continue rising to become what they all thought he could be. He is easily second, only to Michael Jackson, in terms of his creativity, originality, and sheer talent. New Edition acknowledged this in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. In an interview before the Heads of State Tour, one can see Bobbi's bandmates, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill holding the mic for him whenever it was his turn to speak. He never touched that mic that whole interview and it was easy to see that it was natural. He was a natural leader of the group, even though he wasn't the oldest. In another interview, Ronnie Devoe, explained how when Bobby was voted out of New Edition, the individual personalities of the other members began to show and develop. If that is not an indication of how much they all acknowledged his leadership and force of personality, then I don't know what is. It is fair to argue that had Bobby had the discipline of Ralph, he could have climbed much, much higher in his career and given much more to the industry. But perhaps that was not even necessary. New Edition, and its members, will remain in the annals of music history and popular culture for posterity. It is the ONLY group that has not disintegrated. All other famous ones, like Destiny's Child, Sisters with Voices, Beatles, and Jackson Five, crumbled when individual members left to pursue solo careers. What folks don't realize is that New Edition is more than a mere "band." It is, more of a craft, or an idea. Because it was set up as such, its individual members could "exit" at different points in time to develop further as artists, and then come back. New Edition allowed that to happen, and so it was normal (Bobby Brown of course led the way even on that aspect of New Edition). Seen in this way, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as a New Edition member "leaving" the group or being voted out of it. Bobby alludes to this in his first interview on Soul Train after he released his single, "Girlfriend." He paved the way for all the other members to "leave" and remain loyal to New Edition, and come back to it at different points in their careers, either as a whole group or in smaller parts and variations. This is why the headline, "New Edition renamed RBRM (Ronnie Bobby Ricky Mike)" some years back was so ridiculous. Bobby explained that RBRM was a loose joint of four New Edition members going on tour as yet another a "new" addition (he called it baby) of New Edition, which was always the "mother." In that sense it was no different than Heads of State (Bobby, Ralph, and Johnny) a few years earlier. And, when asked if New Edition would ever consider including a new member, his response was an emphatic no "no outside individual can ever be included in New Edition." Hence it is clear that New Edition is here to stay, and will outlive its individual members long after they are gone. This, is something that no American act has ever achieved. Not even Michael Jackson could accomplish that. The way New Edition members (Bobby included) carefully avoid slandering each other on interviews shows that they are loyal to something bigger. Yes, they fight (violently sometimes), but they have taken great care not to kill New Edition. Bobby is known as the wildest, and probably most difficult member. However, in his wildness, he has been faithful to New Edition---something bigger than him. That, perhaps, might be his greatest legacy.

Beautifully said but you left out one part. Every album each new edition members released in 1990 was a copy of dont be cruel. Bobby had the advantage of going 1st he was able to get the kinks out his craft by releasing king of stage. Then when he released dont be cruel he evolved musically. To be frank I hate he waited 4 yrs to drop his 3rd album I wish mysitcal magic was released in 90/91 like it was intended to. People forget during the soul train awards bobby actually won an award over Michael Jackson that they were in the same category in .

The multiple dancers worked for Hammer, not Bobby. It dampened his performances. Not the same energy it was when it was just him and Heart and Soul. He added 2 female dancers during the end of the Don't Be Cruel run, which was dope, and should have kept it like that for the BOBBY run. Nonetheless, Bobby was a beast.

I agree go look at his performance of on our own at the soul train awards 1990 it was perfect synergy between bobby and his 4 dancers....it was almost as if they were pushing him to go in harder. You cant have too many energies next to you it dampens your spirit

He’s lip syncing because it’s IDENTICAL to the CD version. Nothing has been altered, even the music and that’s not normal for live concerts.

Bruh, this was 1993, not 1990. Ain't nuthing but a g thang slowed everything down. Even Janet's dancing at the VMA's in 94 was sexier and not as technical and fast paced as the rhythm nation era. Even the assumption it was Soultrain as if he wasn't a crossover act and Usher before Usher or Chris Brown or The Weeknd.SMH!
