Bob Newhart - Bus Driver Training

Комедия

Bob Newhart's 'Bus Driver Training' skit from his Button Down Comedy stand-up show. This video was recorded in 1995, but I believe it was originally found on 'The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back', which was released in 1960 as an audio recording.

I think his telephone conversation routines were a huge influence on phone scenes in sitcoms - I've just finished going through my box set of Cheers, and there's a few times where Sam is on the phone talking to someone and every time I thought "Bob Newhart". This is probably my favourite of his routines, although "King Kong" and "Introducing Tobacco" are well up there.

I was a bus driver, the only problem with being a bus driver is the passengers. One day I pulled up to a stop and the last person to exit from the front door was a woman middle aged and wearing a shoulder bag on her right shoulder. As I was watching to catch a green light to turn left as she stepped out of the bus I quickly shut the door and took off. I then observed that she was running beside the bus, people were screaming out” you got her bag open the door” I thought she was running to make the pedestrian crossing. Then noticed her bag was inside the door and she was outside, I quickly opened door whilst in motion so she could get her bag,but I still made the green light.

I can’t explain it but when I first watched that scene and the set was still in darkness and the bedroom light had not yet been turned on my brain knew where we were in an instant and what was coming! I was stunned with hilarity and delight when the scene came to light. Perhaps it was because I was a “child of 60’s-70’s television” 📺👦🏻 whose instincts had been honed by the medium just as the instincts of a child growing up in the jungle can just feel that a Jaguar 🐆 is approaching. For me this was one of the funniest moments in television history! Bob Newhart has brought unending joy to millions. ❤️

The first time I heard this skit it was on an LP record at a friends house, so no film track just the sound track back in 1978, I was only 17 and I thought he was the funniest man I had ever heard and it was the first time I had ever heard an American accent. I thought he was brilliant, I made myself remember his name and I am so glad I did. This is the second time I have ever heard this skit and it is exactly as I remember it, nearly 35 years later... still as funny as ever...

I memorized "The Driving Instructor", and presented it as a stand-up routine at our HS school's Prom. Sorry, Bob, for infringing your IP rights, but the routine went over gang-busters! Every year after that, some student got up and did stand-up!

Let me add a traveller’s defence to the Chicago bus drivers. A couple of weeks ago I dropped a Harley off at Eagle Riders near O’Hare airport. I had to get back to the city and being a Brit I really didn’t want to empty my wallet into a taxi. I was told a bus stopped right out side and would take me to Rosemount then the Blue Line into town. The bus was right on time with my Apple Maps app (it has worked so well in LA two and a half weeks earlier). The bus driver was so polite and as I proffered a twenty dollar bill (damn tourists, sorry) he said not to worry this one’s on me - I like your accent. I got none of the Newhart passenger spinning, just a desolate industrial landscape then into Rosemount where the ticket guy helped me book tickets for the next day and skipped my fare into town, because he “liked my accent”. 2,700 miles across America and it felt to friendly and welcoming and safe - even on the Freeway dodging the tyre carcasses at 75mph. Truly a beautiful country and wonderful people. Get me back to those high desert roads of total nothingness and maybe a few more days to explore Chicago properly.

Danny James Not so hard for literate people with an actual real sense of humour and an eye for the absurdities of life. This was the way comedy was for more than half of the 20th century. It's only today's so-called modern 'alternative' ('alternative' meaning not actually funny) who think that profanity is,in and of itself, amusing without anything to back it up.

Not a comedy Grammy, the actual album of the year award competing against the likes of Harry Belafonte and Frank Sinatra. It was the first comedy album to ever hit number one on the Billboard chart. He had not one but two long running TV shows, each named after him. He appeared on the Ed Sullivan show eight times he guest hosted The Tonight Show 87 times, hosted SNL twice. I mean what the hell is your version of recognition lol.

Bob's trademark was the one-sided conversation, letting the listener fill in the gaps - just brilliant. He was actually in an old war movie, Hell is for Heroes, in which a small band of Americans try to stave off an assault by a much larger German force for 48 hours, largely by convincing them they are a much larger group. They discover a wrecked pillbox in which the Germans have apparently left a live microphone for eavesdropping; the commander assigns Newhart to fake up some radio traffic and make it sound like they're a battalion. The result is hilarious! It's a long time since I've seen it, but recall Bob saying something along the lines of "More men, General? Oh, no, sir; we've got just about all the men we can handle right now..." Quite unexpected in an action flick.

A great classic, I can't help but wish it was expanded at some point. You have to include the essentials like always being 15 minutes late or early of the scheduled stop time. Or every once in a while just driving on by "because you are full up" despite there being empty seats.

When I think of Bob Newhart I think of this joke except that in an earlier version the driver is instructed to use a "heel-toe, heel-toe" motion with the accelerator to rock the passenger with the packages back and forth down the aisle until they and the packages end up spread all over the floor at the back of the bus...CLASSIC!

While visiting Philadelphia, i tried to catch a bus to Franklin St. i was young and fit, so when he pulled a way i gave chase. When he was caught by a red light, i gained on him. This repeated for 3 miles and i caught it, climbed on and asked if this bus goes to Franklin St. he pointed out windshield “THIS is Franklin crossing right here. I stepped off the bus. HE was a master bus driver! Cheers!

The only reason anyone uses expletives, is because the are not really funny without them. Which simply means they are not really funny at all.

Gene Williams I don’t use expletives much myself but they are only words. In some circumstances they are essential to humour, which often relies on a sudden shock. Why are rude words such a big problem?

It is not just the accelerator-brake-accelerator-brake engagement sequence, it is the rapid and overwhelming onset and, as Bob correctly points out, the timing. Combined with RAPID change of direction at high speed this will result in unforgettable trips!

Well this brings back memories ! In 1963 l was 10years old. My Father received a birthday present from his sister who lived in America. (We live over the pond) It was Bob Newharts latest album .As l recall not only was this on it but the Submarine sketch ? and more importantly J.F.K. pulls his entourage into a fuel station and says to the pump guy " fill 'em up ....and by the way do you do Green Shield ? " to which the pump guy says "No " ....J.F.K Promptly pulls out ! As we all know J.F.K. was tragically assassinated very shortly afterwards and the album was taken off all shelves . I have no idea what happened to " fathers " copy . Probably worth a small fortune ! Even at my very young age l 'got" Mr. Newhart 's humour and nearly 60 years later still find it timeless ! Only very talented people can do this , particularly on both sides of the Alantic ! Thankyou for sharing .
