I could watch Bob Newhart do Half a phone call all day every day
Thank you to my grandad for introducing me to the comedy of Bob Newhart, he’s brilliant.
His standup from the 50's / 60's is still brilliant today !

His first album is also his first public performance. Before that, he was "the really funny guy at work."
Bob Newhart is a legend!😂
Bob Newhardt always delivered holding up a mirror to modern America. His material was always entertaining.
He’s 56 here, hard to believe he’s still with us after all these years.
I love Bob Newhart.
Bob Newhart... Just brilliant..
OG showing how it’s done. “Depends if we have a 13th floor or not” is a damn killer joke
I really needed some comedy right now. Thanks Bob.
Clean, sharp and still alive!

I heard that one of his stand up comedy albums is one of the best-selling of all time.
Definitely on the Mount Rushmore of comics.
A comedy treasure, My favorite Comedian.
I have found SNL almost oppressive in recent decades. Everybody is trying so hard, amping up the intensity in a vain effort to cover for unimpressive material. To see something so understated, so outwardly effortless, and so brilliant is a welcome relief.

Agreed! I'm with him on how funny it is to have King Kong interact with a security guard. That is pure gold comedy.

Happy Ninety-Third Birthday to This Deadpan Goofball. 😌😊☺️☺️😊😌😊🐹
Bob Newhart, like Betty White & Carol Burnett, is a national treasure.
my parents had the best of bob newhart album (1966) and that routine was on there
Didn't know Professor Proton hosted SNL.
I've loved Bob Newhart and his briliant comedy since I raided my older sister's record colleciton an discovered his "Unbottoned" album in something like '63! I was about twelve. And my dear sister was never angry with me, just happy I'd found him!
Mr. Newhart is my birthday twin (5 September). He will be 95 this year! ❤
Legend.
I can’t stop watching this. If only a therapist had told me to stop it twenty years ago. It is beyond genius.

Have you seen Bob’s therapist sketch? He gives great advice on how to “stop it!”
One of the best comedians ever
Still my favorite SNL ever. Don Rickles hosting is my number 2.
Thanks Norm Oldheart.
Newhart's phone sketches are the best - you have to use your imagination to fill in for the person he's talking to. Rather than just listening, you become engaged.
One of the classic comedians of all time. He is still alive, but very old and feeble now-- I believe he's in his nineties. God bless him.
Brilliant comic and from all I've read a good man. Thank you for posting, show more greats who hosted dammit!
Ya gotta love Bob Newhart
My parents loved all of the Bob Newhart shows … we had one TV do we had to watch with them or read a book
Brilliant Bob Newhart!

Ha. My wife is a master of Catch-22. She won't do things when she thinks about them she waits until she forgets them.
I am taking a pay cut. Ha, ha
I didn’t know Newhart was still alive
Genial!
I saw Bob Newhart perform at a charity gig in Austin in the late '90s, and I was stunned when he did a fair bit of risqué material -- especially in front of a charity show audience! I haven't been able to find any evidence of him doing those kinds of "adult" routines any other time -- I would expect him to do it here on SNL if anywhere! Has anyone else seen Newhart doing material about s*x?
3:20 hahaha mine doesn't/does!
That was a little hard to watch. Felt like the audience wasn't really with him...just little titters of a few people laughing. Younger audience, maybe they didn't get the humor of it.

This is how people used to react to comedy in clubs. They chuckled and laughed (or not) and applauded. Listen to some older comedy albums on KZread and you'll be shocked. Too many people are screamers these days, which means nothing. You cannot laugh and scream at the same time.
🔥
Hi Bob!
He had a failed sitcom, "Bob" a year before this, and another failed sitcom "George and Theo" a year after. The first one I understand, even with Betty White. The second one should have kept going.

WHO KNEW HE STUTTERER IN REAL LIFE
Thanks for this recall of a 👍 comedian. Usually I search Dick Cavett old shows or even those Stupid Pet Tricks on the original David Letterman 😂
Bob was mildly funny here. Personally I think he did his funniest guest work on The Big Bang Theory.
I thought he was formerly a psychiatrist
I cant remember a time when Bob had hair.

Not grouchy enough of a voice. He was perfect for Bernard in The Rescuers.
"Hi Bob" now drink n!
KRUSTY FUERAL
He kind of bombed.
My primary reaction to this is that each generation has less imagination than the one before it. If Newhart did this routine on SNL in 2023, I expect there would be complete silence.

Great YT comment. His generation had MUCH more imagination. (because of radio?) I'm laughing at the outset about King Kong and a security guard as a premise. The audience is waiting for........?

It’s different kind of humour Some of the SNL stuff in recent decade is absolutely brilliant (like alien abductions sketches with Kate McCinonn), some is tedious, boring and predictable And sir, I have a hunch that SNL is not the reason you miss those days )
