Bob & Marcia Young, Gifted & Black (Official Audio)

Official audio for Bob and Marcia's seminal hit version of '(To Be) Young Gifted and Black' from 1970
Prior to uniting on disc towards the close of the sixties, Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths had enjoyed successful solo careers in their native Jamaica, both having previously scored significant hits for Coxson Dodd's famed Studio One Records.
Soon after joining Harry Johnson’s stable of artists, the duo made the British pop charts with a joyous reggae version of Nina Simone’s ‘To Be Young, Gifted And Black’, which peaked at number five in the spring of 1970.
The following summer, the pair returned to the UK Pop charts when their self-produced version of the Crispian St. Peters’ pop hit, ‘Pied Piper’ made it to number 11, but by the mid-1970s both singers had returned to their successful solo careers, with Marcia also becoming a third of Bob Marley’s all-female backing band, the I-Threes.

(TO BE) YOUNG GIFTED & BLACK (LYRICS)
Written by Weldon Irvin & Nina Simone
Published by EMI Tunes Ltd.
Young, gifted and black!
Oh what a lovely precious dream
To be young, gifted and black,
Open your heart to what I mean
In the whole world you know
There’s a million boys and girls
Who are young, gifted and black
And that's a fact!
Young, gifted and black!
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
Yours is the quest that's just begun
When you feeling real low
Yeah, there's a great truth you should know
To be young, gifted and black
Your soul's intact!
Oh, young, young, gifted and black!
How I long to know the truth
There were times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth
Ah, but my joy of today
Is that we can all be proud to say
To be young, gifted and black
Is where it's at!
Young, gifted and black!
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
Yours is the quest that's just begun
When you feeling real low
Yeah, there's a great truth you should know
When you are young, gifted and black
Your soul's intact!
Oh, young, young, gifted and black!
Oh, ow I long to know the truth
There were times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth
Ah, but my joys of today
Is that we can all be proud to say
To be young, gifted and black
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!
Is where it's at!

I was the son of an American serviceman at RAF Lakenheath when Marcia released it. We were enlisted mens sons and were taught with British nationals along with the kids on the council estates. We frequently got the cane right along with him. Still I can’t listen to this and remember England. Thanks for your service mate. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

This was one of my favorites songs growing up in 🇯🇲Jamaica where those artists are from. I now live in the USA and today I saw my 10 years old grandson came in from school wearing a T shirt with that quote written on it. It took me back to my childhood days 😊then I played this song for him and he ❤️💕it. Thanks for sharing.

This so was so Uplifting for black people in the early seventies i can remember our house of many people everyone would sing a long we were so naturally beautiful and happy even though we did have a lot and we were constantly told we were bad because we had afro hair and because we are black. In jobs in schools on the street but this song gave us belief and confidence.
