Fun to look back at the history of the Oscars! The year before this was televised I was touring with Bob Hope and my sister as part of The Dean Martin Golddiggers! Do you like vintage? I loved how Hope always called the Academy Awards, in his house, PASSOVER.

I watched that as new, I was age 14.The Oscars of 1967 were the first I ever watched on tv, but quit watching after around 1986.My whole family would watch them during those good years, and we'd guess at who'd win and who we hoped would.It was fun.Bob Hope's comedy is still awesome.

The Academy Awards or as it's known to Bob Hope, PASSOVER!! That joke is so corny, but I always laughed! Best Oscar MC's 1) Bob Hope 2) Johnny Carson 2A) Billy Crystal (Especially the musical numbers)

1:35, Johnny Green conducts the Academy Awards orchestra for the 17th and final time before his death 14 years later, and 32 years after that, Bill Conti would break Green's record with 18 and currently holds the record for the most stints as Academy Awards musical director at 19!

I wish I could find a clip of the year Chuck Heston was master of ceremonies, and was running late because of a flat tire. Clint Eastwood had to fill in, and it was hilarious! The look of relief by Eastwood when Heston arrived, was a million dollar moment in the history of "Live" television!

I believe that was the 1973 academy awards.

I watched both the Oscars and the Emmys every year, from 1969 to 1989. My brothers and I kept hoping our faves would win, and would cheer when they won. Movies were great back then, as were TV shows.These award shows are ideal to watch during this virus.

Bob Hope was not only the best stand up comedian ever, he had the guts to be controversial. Even if you don't understand his joke, you often hear the oohs and the aaahs from the sensitive and powerful in the audience

Kevin C Could not agree more I had the pleasure of seeing home live in my home town of Melbourne back in July 1983. He just turned 80 a few months earlier, but could've easily passed for a much younger man. One and a half hours of hilarious one liners one after the other. Never flubbed a line or skipped a beat. A true legend, that's for sure.

Kevin C...Bob Hope "had the guts to be controversial?" You've got to be kidding. Every word that came out of his mouth was written by third-rate lackeys and cleared by network suits. Not only was Hope allergic to controversial humor, he just plain wasn't funny. Never could understand why he was "famous."

I miss these OSCARS no politics, no bias, just fun.

Now this is entertaining. Love it!

Footage of Raquel Welch during both the arrivals and Bob Hope's monologue were quickly followed by shots of Lauren Bacall. It's intriguing to ponder on today because seven years later, Welch and Bacall would be a embroiled in a feud (mostly fueled by Bacall). Bacall was very upset when the producers of her hit Broadway musical Woman of the Year chose Welch to take over the lead role.

Wow, times have sure changed. This was a couple of years before I was born and this is my first time seeing an opening monologue of the Oscars before the 80s. I can appreciate how this was funny for many people back in the days, and even today the hosts of Academy Awards make risky jokes that don’t make everyone laugh and will probably be frowned upon even more decades from now, but that comment about Marlon Brando and the “Indians” holding him hostage, to hear it in the year of “the Killers of the Flower Moon” being nominated and seeing Lily Gladstone just win SAG yesterday, my mind is blown a little. The audience is also so white, which is also expected but seeing it just makes you realize how much has changed for the better for the industry, in the nearly 50 year since this time, even if it’s still got a looong way to go.

Brilliant.

Bob Hope didn't need to be "Chairman of the Board". He was already Bob Hope. It was enough. And he knew it.

"This program, some video and audio portions of which were pre-recorded, is brought to you in living color on NBC." That was the very last time those words were spoken; after those Oscars, the telecasts would move back to ABC, where it has remained ever since.

Unless ABC and the AMPAS decide not to go on with agreement in the future; if they do so, then the Oscars will find a new home in either NBC, CBS, The CW or FOX.

+Dana Long Every network should have a major awards show to balance themselves out: CBS has the Grammys and Tonys (since 1973 and 1978 respectively); NBC had the Golden Globes until recently (also now on CBS as of 2024); ABC, the Oscars; and Fox, the Primetime Emmys (every four years since 1995). ABC had the Oscars from 1961-70 before it returned there for good in 1976, and just like the Masters tournament and CBS, they've been synonymous with each other.

FOX also has the Daytona 500 every year, NBC has the Indianapolis 500 every year (taking over from ABC, which televised the event from 1965-2018), FOX has the US Open Golf every year (taking over from NBC, which televised the event from 1995-2014), ABC the NBA Finals, NBC the Stanley Cup Finals, WWE has WrestleMania, FOX the World Series, ESPN the College World Series, CBS the Academy of Country Music Awards, ABC the Country Music Association awards, TBS/TNT the Screen Actors Guild awards, TNT the Western Conference Finals, NBC the Summer/Winter Olympics every 2 to 4 years and CBS, FOX and NBC air the Super Bowl every 3 years!

tron was a terrible movie. It made no sense. I am a graduate of MIT and it was a poor career choice for him. Jeff bridges has done some amazing work. one of the best actors. didn't realize he had a claim to fame at a young age after watching this. One of Jeff Bridges best pieces of work I think was in K-Pax

Couldn't they find film clips in better shape? There are lots of color videos of Bob hosting the Oscars on KZread. The ones showed here are scratched black and white kinescope films.

This was an interesting look back at the initial segment of the Academy Awards presentation. Bob Hope's comedy is topical, meaning that the viewer would have to know what Hope was talking to find any humor in it.

4 or 5 of those were great.

What surprised me was why they used the black-and-white kinescopes of the colour broadcasts when they could have easily used the colour videotape recordings. (Expensive costs, I guess.)

Mr. Hope great as always. Such style and confidence, masterful delivery. Probably saw this originally in 1975 as I still was watching every year back in that era, still familiar with most of the films that came out. Although I found most of the jokes pretty funny, a few dimming with time or my no longer recalling details and gossip surrounding the stars and films mentioned, I sensed that the audience wasn't as receptive or perceptive as they ought to have been. Did anyone else get that impression? Much of the laughter was rather muted or somewhat delayed in response. There were a tiny number of jokes that, perhaps, weren't overly strong but since Hope's monologue was geared to an industry audience, it seems they should've "gotten" all of them. Was the room just too large, too many people to be in sync on each joke? Were the majority pre-occupied and nervous, especially the nominees, unable to fully concentrate on the jokes? Perhaps. I don't know. Hope said nothing political, the divisive Vietnam War was over by then, so these factors shouldn't've been in play, as they were in some of his Oscar monologues of the past and which affected audience response. Do strictly movie & Hollywood-related jokes limit the scope for humor, i.e., too many jokes on a very narrow subject, a few being fine but becoming too in-house or generally a little simplistic, obvious, or quasi-repetitive? In other words, Hope's monologues tended to be sharper and funnier when commenting on society as a whole, cultural trends, politics and politicians, other people or events in the news, etc., always current & topical. This Oscar monologue was topical, of course, but perhaps, as I mentioned, too limiting and inside. I realize that he was there to kid and lampoon all the nominees as well as Hollywood in general, so that's fine. Still doesn't explain the audience's fairly slack response, with some exceptions. Some of them are seen sitting there stone-faced. Again, I don't know. As mentioned, perhaps nervousness. Mr. Hope, though, was excellent. His confident and charge-ahead delivery, regardless of response, is the hallmark of a true pro. This was alot of fun to see!

Same. I was curious about that one. He was nominated for Lenny that year, which got six nods, which may have been the most that year. But some piece of timely humor, perhaps, that doesn't hold up now.
