Lyrics:
Early one morning the sun was shining
I was laying in bed
Wondering if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was going to be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
And I was standing on the side of the road
Rain falling on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues
Getting through
Tangled up in blue

I was reading a book about Dylan a few years back and it pointed out that this song is the musical equivalent of a Cubist painting by Picasso, where it allows you to see a single object simultaneously from several points of view. The perspective in the song shifts again and again from "I" to "she" to "he" and ends up back at "I" at the end, letting us know that the characters in the song, and everyone listening to the song, all "feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view." Brilliant and beautiful.

I stole this album as a 10 year old from my sisters room and played it over and over. It mystified me, it lifted me into another world. I memorized every track that night I can still hear the needle drop through my Koss headphones. I winced the first time I played it through I’d never heard someone bare their soul so completely on an album. The sun came up and I went to bed changed forever. Thanks, Bob.

Blood on the Tracks got me through the grief following a divorce. I listened to Dylan here and there but for some reason put the album on one day and it was surreal to hear the album while experiencing those raw emotions. This song hides the sadness of which it speaks behind a catchy tune and is the perfect start to an incredibly emotional and sad album. I felt like I wasn’t sitting alone drinking beer but instead had a friend in Bob and came to also appreciate not just the sadness of the album but the themes of hope as well. It’s like Dylan saying “Sure, this is an incredibly hard time, but you’ll come through it a new and different person.” Thanks so much Bob!

desire turned me onto him first when i was 17 or 18. i thought to myself "this is the same guy who wrote 'blowing in the wind'"? isis, one more cup of coffee, hurricane... i was hooked. took me a little longer to get into his earlier records. but songs like 'with god on our side' and the early protest songs are some of my most cherished now in my 30s.

I think the literary types were, for the most part, just saying that songwriting is poetry plus music, and not poetry alone. Thus not literature as such. But since there is no Nobel category for songwriting, I think they had to figure out how to properly honor this once in a lifetime genius, so they bent the definition a little. After a years reflection,I think they did the absolute right thing, they brought him to the attention of a whole new generation. Who must be awed.

For some reason Dylan skipped the best verse on this song. It is so amazing that I think it should be here: She lit a burner on the stove And offered me a pipe “I thought you’d never say hello,” she said “You look like the silent type” Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin’ coal Pourin’ off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you Tangled up in blue

+Mr. Tuthill Yes this performance WOULD be perfect if he never skipped my 2nd favourite verse in the song. However I really like the rewrite here: He had a job in Santa Fe Working in an old hotel But he never did like it all that much And one day it just went to hell So he drifted down to New Orleans Lucky not to be destroyed Where they got him a job on a fishin' boat Docked outside Delacroix The last line is one of the greatest rhymes he ever wrote.

And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same, She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, "Don't I know your name?" I muttered somethin' underneath my breath, She studied the lines on my face. I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, Tangled up in blue."Always gives me chills.

Brilliant lyrical storytelling. No one comes close to the master. This song is like a 1000 page epic novel from the 19th century compressed into a 5 minute song. It encompasses so many places, situations and people so quickly and so specifically that it's almost hard to keep up. This live version is even more interesting in that Bob seems to start off calm and collected. But by mid way thru the song you can see his face start to change to a scowl, and the tempo of the song becomes more fast paced and frenzied. And the Harmonica solo at the end is just an instrument to blow off steam as he finishes the song. So much going on in this song that must have really hurt Bob in real life, behind all of the named locations and allusions buried in the lyrics...

With respect to songwriting, he has said that he wrote songs because he had to sing them, and no one was writing the songs he wanted to sing. I think he is a poet, a great poet, but he didn't set out to be such. He set out to make a living as a musician first.

Absolutely hard to sing. To synchronize that difficult phrasing with a solo guitar performance can only be accomplished well by one guy. We just watched him.

I relate to every one of these short stories. And the way he tells them and the words he uses is interesting and poetic. American art and imagery that only Bob can do.

if you call this 'bob' a genius, then what word do you use for Beethoven? for a primitiv people who think ground bovine muscle in the form of a "hamburger" is cuisine, i can see how the music of his dim-witted mediocrity would be art.
