Bob Dylan - Ballad Of A Thin Man (LIVE Hollywood Bowl 1965)

This is the best live version of "Ballad Of A Thin Man" from 1965 in existence. It is a mediocre soundboard tape, recorded at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on September 3, 1965.
In my opinion, the Hollywood Bowl concert is one of Dylan's finest shows ever. His voice is still crisp and spirited, and his arrangements are punctual and intense. The acoustic set is sublime, and the electric half has a catchy 1960's folk-rock sound, boasting guitarist Robbie Robertson, organist Al Kooper, bassist Harvey Brooks, and drummer Levon Helm. Enjoy this gem while you can!

I was at this concert. I was 15 years old. I had seen him the year before at Wilson High School in Long Beach. Nobody knew he was playing with a band. It was Bobby Gregg, Robbie Robertson, Al Kooper, etc. 1st set acoustic. Intermission. Band set. It was surreal. Sound was good. This board tape is perfect. The next tour in 1966 was at Long Beach Convention Center. Sound was horrible. 1st concert was the most memorable.

Great version, but I prefer the 1966 versions. They have more bite ... no doubt based on what he was experiencing at the time.

Thing about Bob Dylan, seems like he just singing along. He just as well stop singing and walk off stage, same thing, makes no difference to him.

Easily one of his most alluring melodies. However, these particular lyrics are just awful.

Yeah, the lyrics are mostly nonsense. There is some deep meaning behind them, but Dylan went a little bit too far, and this time it didn't work. But it's beautiful to listen to.

Michele Minick Manchester’s great. My favorite version is Dylan in Edinburgh; you can see an filmed excerpt of it on KZread. Second favorite is Sheffield in ‘66, it’s on my channel as well if you wanna give it a listen :)

Michele Minick Fascinating! I knew it was about Dylan’s ugly relationship ship with the press, but I didn’t know the specifics. Still not my favorite Dylan lyrics; the words just don’t flow to my ear, but doesn’t mean they’re “bad” by any means. Thanks for shedding some light on the subject!

@Michele Minick Sure, but Dylan was an incredible poet. The guy could have rhymed "wood" and "Could", but when it came out of his mouth, it just sounded right. I am more of a Dylan fanatic than you could ever imagine. I have like 40 version of Mr. Tambourine man on my phone, haha. This is one of the first songs I've heard of his that I just was not crazy about. Not the message, the moral, or the premise. Simply the flow of the lyrics.
