The ending will always be the most perfect thing of the run to me. Bob finishes the greatest vert run in the history of the sport and just merely raises his board over head, slightly bows his head and just soaks everything in. Whatever Bob was feeling in that moment is probably the closest a human can get to genuine nirvana. He had a straight up religious experience for about two minutes.

When you had three trained high-class skaters in the commentary booth, and all they could do was geek out incoherently at that trick, it's safe to say that disbelief should be anyone's reaction to it.

did everyone realize what was happening while that run was going down? at home the hype from the announcers made totally clear just how ridiculous every trick that went off was, but i wonder what it felt like in the arena, since some of those tricks were so technical.

@@coribald I mean we all knew we were seeing the best in the sport at that time. I was just so overwhelmed by the experience of being there. It was such a spur of the moment thing. Was still in HS and traveling to Philly (65 mi away and in another state) without parents was a cool bit of teen freedom. Got ushered into the first union center like 5 minutes after arriving (snuck in the back entrance to the south philly sports complex cause the line to get in was around the block) and before I knew it I was looking at the best skateboarders in the world. Core memory for sure. After all the events were over and the sun was going down me and my friends smoked a blunt right on the steps of the world famous spectrum at the foot of THE rocky statue. 2001 was a great time to be a skater. Great time to be alive. The summer before 9/11 was like the peak of American culture. It all went to shit after that.

I was there too, was one of the best live events I've ever been to across any category. I didn't know at the time where this run would stand in history I just knew people were going out of their minds and it looked incredible. Also saw Stephen Murray do the first double back flip in Dirt Bike Stunt as well, which stuck out as historic in that moment.

Tony's 900 was the most famous skateboarding moment of all-time but this was the greatest skateboarding moment of all-time. Bob Burnquist and Bucky Lasek were in their primes. They would have to be on the Mt. Rushmore of skateboard vert. This is a legend beating a legend with the greatest run ever performed at X Games. As far as competition goes, it can't get any greater!

There is an art and fluid motion to the way Bob is on a skateboard that nobody else really matches. He is jazz to the technical expertise of Bucky. Bucky is great, but Bob elevates the art form in a way nobody can touch. Also about half way through I'm covered in goosebumps as Sal and Tony Hawk are losing their minds, but when he does the kick flip off the ramp and they lose it, I can't help but smile like a little kid. I've been watching since I was a kid and I'm way too old now, and I've never seen anything this good. It was genius that night and continues to be genius. GOAT for sure, but even more so when you realize that probably half of Bob's tricks are things he attempted in best trick in various years. The run insane. Thank you for posting this version so I can actually see it. Much appreciated.

You have to remember, folks, this is 2001. You don't throw complex grinds that swap your stance mid-run. You don't think twice, but four or five times before you decide to throw a flip trick to fakie as your "last trick". I think Bob knew this run, had it planned out, and finally, looking for a 95.6 or better in what was the biggest skateboarding event on Earth, decided it was his time to throw it all down.

It's crazy to think how young I was, and how exciting this moment in time translated through my body in raw emotion and excitement. I cried in joy i was screaming at my grandparents house It was magical. Skated for days after non stop... And a month later the world changed forever. It was a whiplash that i didnt see at the time but i was today years old when i found a new level of understanding of this run. It was EVERYTHING! And it was one of the last times before pure uncertainty shot round the country that i was truly happy. Thank you for having this for my kids to watch. 10, 4 and 2. Be well everyone.

Tony Hawk is absolutely the most well known but I'd daresay that Bob is technically the better. Which isn't to discount Tony, because Tony is/was amazing and accessible. He skated in a way that even people who didn't know skating knew he was good. Bob is a skater who you don't realize how good he is unless you dip your toes in. He is the Bret Hart to Tony's Hulk Hogan (with apologies to Tony Hawk for the comparison).

Thought Shawn White's 2011 vert run was technically better, more amplitude, harder tricks overall. One thing going for this run though is the reaction from the 3 in the booth.

Looking back on this tas pappas had the better run than bucky and Bob. His combo with the 360 varial flip to fakie to 720 still holds up in comps today except for the trash former vert skater judges Neil hendrix/ lincolin udea

Tas was the best , him and Ben were constantly pushing the envelope of what was possible. I saw them at a contest in NY we just happened to stumble across , 96 I think, and Ben won. I didn't even know who he was. They got me back into skateboarding...
