Boating in Birmingham (recording of “live” broadcast)
A rather impromptu live-stream on my iPhone (sorry, should have actually planned this in advance so as to avoid the naff sound due to wind but it only occurred to me to go live as we went along) from the large cavalcade of boats in Birmingham, assembled to do a bit of flag-waving for the city as it hosts this year's Commonwealth Games. Thanks to Narrowboat "Old Nick" for hosting me!

Lovely little live! A nice surprise, and a big well done for the phoneography!! Very steady!

The US canal system isn’t built for them….. the majority of the canals are built for larger industrial ships. Which means they are on average much deeper and wider and the large boats travel faster , all of this causes wakes that narrowboats are easily swamped in. Also the network isn’t as interconnected enough like the CRT is to be able to be used for Recreational Travel. Narrowboats are the Full size American RV variant of the UK. While they do have Full size RVs there , the network of services that cater to them is not as extensive as it is in the States to establish RV communities as large and as numerous (per capita ) as in the states
Thanks for the ride!!
A request, if I may. The impromptu 'live stream' was so enjoyable, that I feel that I, and I dare say your many regular vlog 'addicts', would really appreciate more of these live segments from other events. Once again, many thanks for your work!
Hello from South Alabama here in America. Love and Light to all. Looks like fun
Came in long after you live streamed. Lol. We have the same sing-along in the US for Sweet Caroline. He is a good singer. What fun. Glad you posted.
As a Boston Red Sox fan it was wonderful to see folks singing along to "Sweet Caroline" the same you'd see at Fenway Park! Thank you for sharing this experience!
What an exciting event!
Hello David, Good video. Enjoyable viewing, thank you. Take care. Paul,,
"80 Boats In Brum!" Thanks for the live stream - much appreciated. Really takes me back. This shows that canals really drive regeneration and 'geese and seagull action' !
Great video That singer has great a great voice on him
I am a Brit watching from Oregon. Boy, do I miss Britain in the summer :-(
And here I thought that song was only popular with the pensioner crowd in the States. Just about any event or gathering with the over 50 crowd on this side of the pond, that song is guaranteed to be requested, and "ba-ba-BAAA" is the guaranteed response at each iteration of the chorus.

Been to a ⚾️ game lately? Every stadium plays it.
Greetings from New Zealand. One of the best memories of our 14 day hire boat cruise around the Warwickshire Ring was arriving in Gas Street Basin at around 7pm on a lovely summers night to find the whole area alive with revellers and jaz bands scattered around the various balconies alongside the canal. The place was really rocking.
Looks like a lot of fun. We need narrowboats in the U.S.!

Not sure what I would do with a Narrow Boat here in Colorado. No water.

I've been thinking the same thing although the expenses would be huge. The ecological band from Northern Oklahoma east would be perfect. As solar/batteries improves the need for fuel could be obsolete. It's a fun thing to think about.
What a Talent, singing and navigating down the canal, very skillful. Simply fantastic.

My skills recognised at last! Thank you! 😂
Brilliant...glad I logged on immediately. Glad to have given you the indicative thumbs up. In my teenage student age...the long pub crawl as was, took place along this ancient watering way .. now it looks most posh. A really fun live cast. Bravo and a great idea. More power to you...and not just electric ... Thanks for the memory ML
Warmest regards from Los Angeles. Thanks for the morning entertainment.
I really want to express my thanks for this wonderful excursion. I truly enjoyed the local scenery, the interaction of pedestrians walking about. The exceptional vivid colors of the surroundings, including the boats and of course the canals. Thank you for your outstanding photography, be safe and enjoy your life. Maranatha
Good on you David you always come up with something unusual and interesting. Big Cheers from me and Canada
Shocking video! Live and local…great commentary. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
‘Surely this is the way to Gas Street Basin’… classic King David!

Thanks for sharing the excitement! Looks like a fun day! Wish I was there! Enjoy!
wonderful David. I missed it LIVE but still very cool.
Thanks for the impromptu filming, it was really good. The music was great.
I love the live unedited grunting as you climb about the boat. ;)
A great example of the serenity of cruising the beautiful, rural country side... wait! Who put those buildings so close to the water?! And what is that noise from the boat ahead?!! Oh well, another vid from my favorite, former boat owner! 👏 🤪
This looks like so much fun!!
I have to say that the canal network within the Greater Birmingham area appears to be the absolute best in terms of enhancing the downtown urban landscape. This is the second or third canal video that I’ve watched involving Birmingham and yes …. It’s always impressive to meander among the skyscrapers and historic landmarks. 👍🇨🇦
Is that sunshine and blue sky? In Birmingham?!
Thanks David for posting the impromptu video, apparently a good time was had by all. The pilot for Narrowboat Natterings did a good job singing while steering the boat, keeping everyone on shore spellbound. It's amazing how good of a camera they put into these smart phones these days, much better than the novelty camera they used 20 years ago.
What a nice surprise 'broadcast'. Thanks.

Apparently Natterings has won quite a lot of talent show prizes, have to admit I thought it was the original recording by Neil Diamond. Looks great fun.
I'm so glad you are cruising as much or more than you were for the last few years of living on the boat. We all should learn the lesson that sometimes to continue to love what we love we need to change the mode.

Fabulous David, loved every minute of your live vlog. Birmingham has changed a lot, although the canals have stayed as I remember. Thank you and Blessings to you XXX
Good to see you back
That was wonderful! Thank you, David!😊 You've cheered up my Saturday!🤗

You often see people fishing in the canals.
I’ve never wished I was somewhere more than this video.
Fantastic to see a brilliant video. Thank you so much. ❤️
Thank you for taking us along David. I really enjoyed the music and the canal ride.cheerio👋🏻
As Hyacinth Bucket - No, it's Bouquet , would say, "Waterside refreshments and Riparian entertainments!" Thanks for the video, David. Glad you are still on the water. Jon

I have watched every episode and have the full box set but thank you for bringing back the memories. I suspect Hyacinth would have taken part in some sea shanties while waiting for Sheridan to wish her well on her mobile phone.
Being Birmingham born and bred this was a great surprise for me. Had you headed the opposite way to the Mailbox you would have passed my beautiful canal side duplex apartment. The lower floor was on the towpath. I used the small water buses to get to the mailbox for shopping and restaurant /wine bars. A great place for a single man to live. I met my partner Maureen Rivers in Brindlyplace but moved to the Jurassic Coast and now live a very quiet life.
Looks like a fun and beautiful day there David!
Looks lovely, hope you have a lovely day.

Thanks for the pep and the smile. I needed it today.
THANK YOU for taking us along on a wonderful British narrowboat event! I appreciate the bankside views of Birmningham!
This is a great little relaxing ride. Thank you for carrying us along with you!
Thank you for that David! 👍😎
What a fun time. And what a perfectly beautiful day for a parade! Thanks for sharing.
Watching now! Awesome!
What a beatufil day of fun on the canal! Thank you David ♥
You may have discovered what many folks already know. The only thing better than owning a boat is having friends with boats. Somewhat like grandchildren. All the fun but then you send them home.
Loved this. Most enjoyable. Thank you.
Great way to start my Saturday! Thank you.🇺🇸😃
Lovely live video! Very nice and fun!!!
That was really enjoyable, thank you. Cheers.
What an absolutely awesome event and yes love the electric boat. The way of the future and Silent. Thank you so much. Best wishes
Thank you, loved it. Made me smile.
Great seeing/hearing from you again
What fun! Really enjoying your festival choices. Thank you for taking us along! Our plans for this evening weren't nearly as much fun as this! Cheers!
That was great - thank you. Thoroughly enjoyed it
That was fun! Great idea you had there, I thoroughly enjoyed the trip!
Hi David, thank you for the great live video, Brum was part of our stomping grounds sixty years ago, it is very nice to see the cut's brought back to life and integrated into the community. I hail from Great Barr and we lived close to the High Bridges cut on the Hampstead to Wednesbury canal. Have just looked at google maps to find that the old woods that went down to the canal are long gone. We were always told "do not go near the canal" where was the first place we went to when we went out to play. You've got it the Cut. Thanks for the time travel! have been in Canada forty nine years now.
Looks like a lot of fun!!
It is a pleasant diversion from all the other channels that youtube has to offer. A mobile phone camera's view of the canal system in Birmingham.
Thank you for a little bit of live action (I actually missed it live - but nice to watch it today). Looking forward to your vlog.
Amazing how "Sweet Caroline" can get a crowd singing, eh? LOL
Missed it live but brilliant fun! 🎉 Thank you
Looks like a wonderful time!
Such a charming vibe to Birmingham's canal area.
A nice journey the thru B'ham . Thanks for that.
Fabulous idea, doing the streaming. I watched the recording but could feel the excitement of being there :)
Thanks for the livestream ! Happy to be able to join in from California!
Very nice Dave, thanks for showing us that, cheers from down under.
That was a fun video, thanks for taking us along on this parade. The gentlemen singing had quite a nice voice and he sure engaged the crowd with his rendition of Sweet Caroline. I imagine there are very few people in the world that hasn't heard that song. Thanks again and have a Blessed day.

Fun day! Thanks for the brief Saturday visit👍👍
What a wonderful video, thank you. My wife and I truly enjoyed it. Though I have been in the UK on numerous occasions, it was always for business under the Davy Corporation, later a part of Trafalgar House. I never had time away from work to see the more interesting parts of the country. So thank you for sharing a delightful part of what I had missed. Take care!
Is this the way to Gas Street Basin? Cos that's the way I want to be facin' 🎶
This looks like alot of fun, big thumbs up my friend. Blessed be.♥️♥️♥️
Thank you for this, looks like a lot of fun, although I now have the idea of wind whistling through a gastric basin, in my head. The idea’s in my head, not the gastric basin.
I just watched Part 2 of his video. Great video. Thanks for sharing
Great job

Thank you David for this clip, Lots of memory's for me and my daughter on our 1st Narrow Boat holiday in 2018 ( been on my bucket list for a long time) - Very difficult for a Novice taking that Post Office Turn in a 70ft Hire boat , was a bit windy also. Beautiful entertainment area we have great meals at the pubs. I just need to get back to the UK to take a longer Narrow Boat holiday
loved this thanks for sharing 👋
Wonderful live-stream David, when I worked in Birmingham, I used to be a regular down here ! Thank you, Take care, Stu xx
