BOAT SHOPPING - Beneteau Oceanis 36CC - Sailing SV Compromise

Episode 9
PLEASE NOTE
We took this episode down off youtube to edit some sections out, on a request from the brokers. Which isn't a problem, we fully understand that this is their livelihood.
Putting the re-edited episode back on youtube may throw our episode sequence out of line.
In this episode we travel North towards Scotland to look at a Beneteau Oceanis 36 CC on a lake in the Lake District

This video may appear choppy in places because we have cut some sections, out of respect for Chris the broker. (We included some content we perhaps shouldn't have)

Hi Gav and Hannah We own a Beneteau 36CC and are very happy with it. We were cringing quite a bit at the suggestion that you cannot add a bimini and were glad to see that you saw right through that one! Some of my observations are: 1. The engine is the standard 28hp. We went specifically for the upgrade 40HP and were very glad of it on many occasions, both when using it for close quarter manoeuvring and during a trip round cape Cornwall in a F8. (Forecast was a bit out!!). I would recommend looking for a boat with the 40hp, although we have not tried the 28 so don't really know what the difference actually is 2. The teak all around looks shot. The full replacement at £3.8k should be high on your job list if you buy, or ask that the repair be completed as a condition of the purchase (Or the price reduced to cover it). You really need this teak to be in good condition to ensure fast fixing alongside. You would be compromising your cleats if you do anything else 3. We have a complete full teak deck, as did the other 36CC you looked at. I didn't know this boat came without it. It looks like someone's been cost cutting .... 4. The starboard water tank is standard. I.m pretty sure all 36CCs have the two tanks. Glad to see that the Holding tank is fitted, many British boats don't 5. The table has been put there to serve day sailing and marina berthing and has actually taken a bed out of the boat. Not just any bed, but the one you would probably use, as we do, as a passage bunk when not on watch. It shouldn't be a big job to return it. Think about your passage pan, where you sleep, etc 6. I don't see the price anywhere, I guess the money you save by buying a boat in need will be spent bringing it up to your spec. 7. We have the B&G Quad system. It's really good, never had an issue with it, use the autohelm in vane mode and you can single hand with ease. Tacking and Gybing is so easy with the system set in this way I think the 36CC is a great choice, (Well, I bought one after all!). I see that there are some for sale in the Med. Good luck with the search; I'll be following your search with interest Maybe we'll see you on the water some time Well done on the video. Andrew

Andrew this feedback is gold, thank you very much. The boat in the video is priced around £10-£12k less than any other CC's to allow for the teak toe rails and the missing table etc. The holding tank was fitted so that it can be used on the lake. I did mention to Hannah that 28hp does sound a little weak on power for the size of the boat and your comment confirmed my thoughts. Having worked out the cost of the work needed and the cost to get the boat transported to the coast is working out to be around the £10-£12k mark same as the cost saving, so I think we need to be looking for something already on the Med. We have certainly set our hearts on the 36CC. We will be making another video shortly with a break down of all the costs. Thanks again for this great feedback, it's good to hear from somebody living with a 36CC Gav, Hannah, Liam & Kyle x

Nice video guys. Green you can clean. Its the fixing that cost, unless you do it yourself. 36 Looks much bigger layout. the blue hulls do look nice, but a lot of maintenance to keep them looking that way. Agree a Bimini is a must have!

SV Impavidus (Ant & Cid Sailing) Thanks Ant & Cid We expected it to be dirty and need a few things doing, we have added everything up that the boat needs and what we need, like I've mentioned to Dave we've also included de-masting, transport and de-masting. We have been told that dark hulls are hard to keep, but they do look beaut. Thanks for watching

Hello Gav & Hannah, while looking at this, the thing that struck me as you spoke about having to find the money to buy the boat was, that the purchase price whatever it is will be a fixed known amount. The figure that you probably need to spend a bit of time thinking about is, realistically how much will you need to spend to make all the additions and changes you want along with the cost of a life raft, any electronics upgrades e.g. AIS, Radar, lifeline, stainless steel work and cabin enclosure, etc? And of course as you said moving the boat to the sea. It fair enough to say we don't need to make all changes or upgrades at once to make it less of a financial burden, but you will still have to spend that money at some point, to make it how you want it. Regards Dave

Dvseire Hi Dave we have done a spreadsheet which includes evrything the boat needs and also includes survey, haul out, de-masting, road transport and re-masting etc etc. It has added a considerable some to the total, which is giving us something to think about. We’ll be doing a follow vid which will show all the costs etc which we have included. Thanks for watching Dave

Absolutely, we've since seen a couple more which look even nicer, so we definitely made a mistake of falling in love with the first boat. We will be doing a little video explaining.

LOL, oh, yes, and then there is the fall in love with the wrong type :-D we did also a lot of research....mono vs cat, new vs old...the age old decisions decisions but it makes us wiser as we go! We are planning around Sept for skippers miles and then cross the pond around November?

It's our first boat, hence the reason we want something small'ish. We would love a cat for the room and stability, but need to learn more first. We will start from the beginning on your videos, it looks a stunning cat the Leopard 45.

Well, a good job on the editing, couldn’t spot the joins :). We were surprised you had to edit the original as we couldn’t remember anything unacceptable about your comments. The broker seems a very honest guy and in fact made his own comparisons between this one and the 10k more expensive one. Strangely enough I think there’s something missing from the beginning that is pointed at later .... you’ll know what I mean if I’m right ... but don’t remember it being unacceptable. Never mind. Good luck with the search. I saw you over on Facebook and if nothing else these videos are proving to sellers that you’re not just “tyre kickers”. 👍

The broker is a great guy, he's very honest and we would buy a boat from him in a flash 👍🏼 The things we edited out are in respect to the brokerage, the boat is still for sale as far as we know so they rightly so, don't want holes picked socially. The things we found issues with the boat may not be an issue to somebody, not that we are over picky at all. Thanks about the edit, in the end we managed to use the crop function within KZread. Definitely not tyre kickers, it cost a small fortune for the haul out and survey. Cheers for the support mate, we appreciate it [Gav]
