That kid backing the trailer down the boat ramp did it 100 times better than I would have. And if that parking lot would have been full, it would have been 1000 times worse. He gets a standing ovation from me.

People who are new to boating may be a mockery but we’ve ALL been that person at one point or another. It’s not the water that’s unsafe it’s the boat ramps. But that’s with everything in life - go at your own pace and be respectful doing it, it’ll all be good.

While yes we have all been there. There is a right way to go about learning and a wrong way. Learning to maneuver a trailer on the boat ramp? Wrong way. In a vacant parking lot? Right way. Launching you boat for the first time on a busy boat ramp at peak hours? Wrong way. Launching off peak hours multiple times as practice launching and retrieving? Right way. Going at your own pace going through your checklist and checking it twice on the boat ramp? Wrong way. Going through your checklist and checking twice on the staging area? Right way.

Did you ever get the feeling some people shouldn't own boats? I only saw one child wearing a PFD! And that last boat, 400 hp on that small boat is overkill and luckily only the trailer winch stand bore the brunt of the damage saving the truck. Great video! Best Regards, Jay

Also practice, practice, practice in a parking lot away from the crowd. The first time you go to the water do it on a slow day during the week and take someone experienced with you. After you get the boat off the trailer, tie it off and go back to the parking lot with your rig and practice backing the empty trailer when you can only see it in the mirrors…don’t let a busy boat ramp be your first time. This is where people fail, they buy a new boat then go to the lake with no idea what they are doing. It cost nothing but gas and your time to practice in a low stress environment but it can be a pretty expensive lesson if you don’t.

I'm in the process of saving up money to buy my first boat and l'm enjoying watching your videos. What is clear to me is the fact that there is so much to learn about boating do's and don'ts, particularly on how to launch and load a trailer boat, including the need to successfully reverse a boat trailer into the water. I have 50 years of towing all sorts of trailers, so l'm okay with that aspect of knowing how to reverse a trailer, however in regards to boating experience, l have no knowledge at all. I'm watching your videos like a hawk and now l can easily pick the experienced and inexperienced boaters. I intend to pay for tuition from an experienced person before l buy a boat as l have no friends that own a boat. Have subscribed to your channel, as some of the others that do what you do, talk far too much, yours is better than so many others and your filming is very good too. Watching from Australia. 🇦🇺 Regards, Brian.

I've never seen this many boaters that can read the wind and drift of their boats. If you watch carefully, the guys that usually get it done first try, sat in their boats and felt the wind and current to gauge their path. Most of these folks are just a lick and a promise.

I grew up on a commercial fishing boat in Murrells Inlet, SC. I was fortunate enough to be taught super young. I was backing up trailers, launching, and loading years before I had my driver license. Not bragging my any means but watching these videos reminds me why my Dad and the old salties were so hard on me about learning skills like this. KZread has nothing on the way they gave me hell when learning and laughed at me but it was all for good reason. It scares me how many people lack these skills at the boat ramp which tells me they are even more at risk once they leave the dock. The water is nothing to play with and will remind you the sec you try to.

Put my new pontoon in the water for the first time. Wife did a little practice the week before but struggled and said a few things today. In the end she got it done backing the loaded and unloaded trailer. and I actually got the pontoon off and back on in first attempt with no issues. Not gonna lie I was a bit worried since my previous boats was a regular hull and easy peasy. Plus watching all the boat ramp KZread channels only show messed up pontoon captains messes with your self confidence. By the way, she insisted on doing the backing up when we go out together.

The first rule of backing a trailer is keep it as straight as possible, so that your corrections on the steering wheel are no more than a half a turn, if you are loosing it go ahead again and straighten up, and the first rule of boating is if a rope falls over the side pick it up, you see what happened when that guy threw the rope to his mate on the trailer and he missed it it eventually got tangled around the trailer wheel because nobody retrieved it.

  • @GWNorth-db8vn

    @GWNorth-db8vn

    4 күн бұрын

I think what these people are doing is trying to aim the trailer so they can back straight up from there. They crank things around to get the trailer aimed and then think about what the truck has to do, which is impossible by then. Turning the trailer is something you do while the whole rig is moving, and it takes slow adjustments over a distance. It's a curve, not a turn.

I see these people standing in front of boats that are powering onto the trailers ...never ever stand directly in front of a boat power loading....if the boat operator misjudges on-loading...that person at the trailer tongue is gonna have a rude awakening. My wife used to do this all the time, thinking she would be ready to hook the safety chain. I had to tell her every single time... DON'T STAND in front of the boat as I power on!!!!

If you are jack-knifing a lot of people don't remember you can pull forward and the trailer straightens out. So They coulda stopped and pulled forwards, then all they'd have to do is back straight up.

Hey Dan I didn't mean to be rude about latest video that you posted about the music being so loud I couldn't hear talk . Then you posted about the wind being so bad I wouldn't be able to hear you . Well I have a question about your camera that you're using . Does your camera have an audio jack on it and if it does you could hook up a microphone to it and get a microphone sock to damper the wind sound .

  • @TheBigDanShow

No offense taken. I’ve got $150 Rode Shotgun Mic with a sound dampening foamy, a dead cat, and an swiffer sweeper dust thing on it. There was no defeating the wind that day. It was miserable. Maybe next time I’ll just record a voice over afterwards. So many channels do that and I try to be as natural as possible with a live commentary but I guess there is no way around it lol

Have you ever thought about visiting freshwater boat ramps? The closest lake to where I live is Guntersville and let me tell you. You’d be surprised the stupidity that goes on up here in north Alabama. I’ve lost count of how many people forget to trim up and drag their stern drive along the concrete

  • @TheBigDanShow

Yes, in fact, I’ve got a local boat ramp down by the river on my hit list this year. The issue is, there’s not that many parking spaces. So you might have 25 boats there and it’s a numbers game you might get one or two good shots out of 25 people, this particular ramp has over 400 spaces and nine lanes, it’s a guarantee when I go there. It’s hard for me to go to the river and waste a whole afternoon, waiting on a bunch of drunks when I can do the same thing and get five times the Content in half the time.
