BOAT LIFE: It Ain't All Sunshine & Bikinis! [Sailing Kittiwake Ep. 109]
In this video, we sail to Union Island and go through rain shower after rain shower. Our next sail is north, to Bequia, when we beat against 30 knots of trade winds.

I would of done the same thing if I saw the anchorage was full and knew we passed an empty one. That anchorage is exactly what it's about. The trade winds are AWESOME! I love being able to sail everywhere and not use the motor much. I like the idea of a manual windlass but just can't bring my self to go to one...The reliability of it is unrivaled. Really like just press a button and bringing up the anchor and the ability, even though I don't use it much, to bring up the anchor from the cockpit is nice, especially if you have to escape in a storm. My wife hasn't learned how to handle our boat so I'm pretty much single handing. This season our goal is to at least get her to be able to start the engine and maneuver in open water. When I had to go over the side to free a few lobster pots off our keel, really need to fare in the rudder plates so they don't make a kecht point, I was smart enough to throw a line off the stern to hold on to but the current was too strong to get back to the ladder. All I could think is her and the kids would be screwed because she didn't know how to even call on the radio at the time. That was our first voyage to bringing her home after the repairs to get her in the water. My wife had never been on anything but a fishing boat before now and her family never let her do anything but ride. I've always singled handed and was alone sailing and never thought about it till that moment I had to beat on the hull to get her attention to get a line and tie it forward so I could pull my self to the ladder. I now have this hole procedure before I go over the side. Discovered that day I'm not as young as I use to be. And the Florida Keys is a lobster pot mine field...The thing that sucks is even when sailing with that ketch spot on my keel I can collect pots and it only takes 4 to stop my vessel in 20 knots of wind. Keep living the dream!

bonjour ryan and elena. another stellar video. i do enjoy seeing your sailing ship glide through the water. the slow motion effect is dream-like. i smiled while Ryan spoke to the local fisherman. there's no shame in learning and honing one's skills. maybe if time permits please, explain to use the 'knot' usage. i see so many knots left and right. i'd like to know what knots you employ for various tasks. all the best, until next Monday. cheers

Another great video, guys! Watching you beating into 30 knots made me a but queasy too. I noticed the “Tayana River” at 16:30. Our T-37 has that “feature” also. I’m going to install a drain to fix that someday......

My chain used to jam from underneath due to it building up like a pyramid my solution was to use right size metal rod down hawse hole from top and wiggle it to get chain to fall and flatten out worked a treat

Nice video guys. Gotta love staysails. Was that a single or double reefed main in use with just the staysail into the wind? I had to do use a similar setup plus 1500rpm from the Yanmar to move at 30 degrees off the wind past some very thick kelp beds only a couple hundred yards off to port recently, in the fog, and into short period, steep 5' to 6' chop; it worked. The boat looks great. Hope you've hooked a few fish lately.

Alright for all the seasoned sailors out there, watching folks world sailing adventures has made me realize sailing in retirement won't be in my plans. HOWEVER I live 10 minutes from Lake Erie which offers great sailing opportunities and access to all of the worlds greatest Great Lakes. What type of sailboat would you all recommend I look for (used) for day and or weekend sailing? Cheers ......

25-35 foot mono-hull easy enough to single hand (ensure lines run to cockpit) and roomy enough to be on for a while or have friends the smaller ones will be more tight, check head room and sleeping spaces are good for you, you don't need high performance, come of the CnC boats may fit your bill? Good luck! (Have place on Lake Huron, near Kincardine)

International H-boat. Sleeps for tightly, two in comfort (no standing headroom though, it's an underdeck-sitting boat), sails well in all directions, competitive even (if You're into that kind of sailing by times) and very easily to singlehand.

It might not be ALL bikinis and sunshine, sporting bare legs/no socks under the foulie's jackets-only still would be way easier than gettin' into all that gear from fleece longarm onesies down to the ankles to lambswool and double fleece-lined this'n that to GoreTex onesies over two pairs of socks in gum seaboots and still freezing atop an 8°C saltwater stirred up into spraying whities by an Arctic north-northeast .... had that helping to transfer a friend's boat over the baltic recently ... It ain't the times to be picky as long as we still can go sailing internationally at all, no matter where, is it? 😷
