BOAT FLIPS WITH 6 PASSENGERS!! | Boats at Haulover Inlet
Video filmed and submitted by:
Adam Birdwell | @searchingtheabyss
Crazy scenario in Boynton Inlet where a boat turns broadside to an oncoming breaking wave. This leads to a flipped and capsized boat with 6 passengers and a dog hitting the water. Luckily there were jet ski riders who immediately came to aid the passengers and shuttle them to shore along with seatow.

When dealing with sets of waves, you really only have 3 options: 1. Get ready to hammer the throttles after each wave to get to the NEXT wave BEFORE it breaks OR 2. Look either side of the breaking wave, for an exit. Once again, jam those throttles to get there fast. OR 3. If it's too late, there are no exits and the wave is about to break in front of you, line up the bow head on, slow down and wait for the break, then jam the throttles to lift the bow and pray! NEVER TURN AROUND.

You forgot the number one primary option- make eye contact with person filming from shore, release the one hand you actually had holding on to a railing, and raise both arms in the air yelling "WooHoo!" while you start twerking, completely ignoring the direction you are traveling in and any incoming waves of impending doom

Upon closer look, I think he did turn to avoid the two surfers. He couldn’t see them until he passed the last wave, then he saw them sitting idle, right there in his path. With another wave coming, he couldn’t just turn sideways to avoid them, so he tried to turn 360 and outrun the next wave coming...he just didn’t make it. I don’t blame the captain here. What's an additional shame about this is that the Captain could have gone out just about 500-1000 feet more and he'd be beyond the breakers and able to turn around easily. He didn't have that much more to go. I think he got a bit intimidated, however, and decided to ditch it when he did.

This is a perfect example of why I disagree with laws saying you only need to have enough life vests in the boat for each person. It took about 1.5 seconds for that boat to get about 20-25 yards away from the people that fell out. The vests don't do any good if they are out of reach. It should be mandatory for minors to wear them while they are in the boat at least when the boat is moving.

This posits that there were no surfers to make his job harder.: 1. Never turn around in that spot, he did, and the expected broadside got him. 2 The captain needed more patience. Wait out the waves inside the breakers as there is an ebb/flow to the size and frequency of the breakers. He attempted to go when they were a little too frequent (little time/space b/w breakers) and tall. 3. Look for other areas...south of him the waves were far more calm and would have been an easier pass had he just traveled inside the breakers a bit more.

@@ooDirtyMickoo Interesting. I've been involved w/ turning big trucks back over, but never thought about a boat. You would probably need two good strong boats, at least, one pulling from the front, the other pulling from the side (in a forward motion), with a strap around it, to flip it, in one sweeping move. Or a big ole' deck boat with a crane, and just lift that bitch out of there. Either way, being a specialized thing, probably is more expensive than boating lessons... Thanks!
