    I think there's a clause in the rulebook that's basically like "if something really strange happens, we dont know, do whatever you want" because there can be some complicated rules interactions.

    Munchkin's rules being convuluted has always felt like more of a feature than a bug to me. The game is a love letter to classic D&D, and arguing over rule interpretation is a time-hobored TTRPG tradition!

    Oh man, i LOVED munchkin back in middle school. Theyre used to be a line in the rules about cheating being allowed if your not caught. Apparently it was facetious since it was removed, but i learned from one of the players who took it literally, so we all cheated when we played and if you got caught you died. You shouldnt play that way without everyone agreeing earlier, but personally I thought it was more interesting

    Oh yeah, that's the way I was introduced to it, too. The "cheat" card was described as a consequence-free cheat that people couldn't call you out on, not the only way to do so. We never had any consequences for cheating, other than embarrassment and people paying more attention to you (which was a bad thing - people carried grudges within games).

    In response to end game complaints: I always had this problem with my friends so we invented Lightning Munchkin. The gameplay is identical except before you start the game you have someone who isn’t playing set a timer anywhere from 13-20 minutes and no one playing sees the timer or gets to look at a clock. Who ever is farthest ahead at the end wins! This encourages harming people earlier on and burning resources to boost yourself earlier! It does rely on people playing honestly and not stalling when they’re in the lead- but my friends are cool so that’s not a problem. Let me know if this works for anyone else!

    In munchkin, there are two types of cards and two phases. Some cards incrementally increase your power level. Other cards are played to stop somebody from winning. In the first phase of the game, everyone plays the first type of card until they get to the second phase of the game. In the second phase of the game when everybody is at level 9, everyone plays the second type of card until they run out. The first player to take a turn when everyone has run out of cards wins.

  • @Benny_Blue
    @Benny_Blue2 жыл бұрын

    I think Munchkin is one of those games where once everyone gets the “plot” of it, it becomes way more fun. Someone else commented on how everyone burns out their resources trying to backstab the first player and prevent them from winning, and then the second player wins with ease. This is definitely an issue for the first game or two, but once everyone gets that the goal is to make yourself as formidable as possible in that final dash to win, it becomes WAY more fun. People start figuring out how best to make use of the 5 cards in their hand, planning out their backstabs and counterplays, making calls on what cards they can “carry” (put on the table to free up their hand) without revealing their plays - like putting out a decent “fire potion” for everyone to see while keeping in their hand a card that triples the effect of flame items. You’re trying to maximize the amount of “backstabbery” in the 5 cards you get to keep secret. When played how it’s intended (or, more accurately, at its best), Munchkin is a game of setup and payoff - everyone races to LV 9 while assembling an armory, but they also tell a gameplay-based story on the way. Players give charity cards to others to keep their hand, negotiate deals that involve letting treasure go, make trades that let them reach LV 9 quicker. And once the final confrontation arrives, all the plays people have been planning come to light - and it is SO easy to see how past decisions made those plays possible. “Aargh, if only I hadn’t given you that class card!” “Wait, you actually USED that?!? I thought it’d be worthless to you!” “Nooo, why did I help you beat that monster!” It makes whoever wins feel foreshadowed and deserved.

    The main issue I've always had with munchkin once you get over the initial learning curve is that it DRAGS. Dicking over your friends is fun and all but its way to easy to get into a scenario where you spend the last 10 minutes of the game constantly screwing over each other, wishing the game would actually end, until someone finally just happens to squeak through when everyone else runs out of fuck you cards.

    I rarely if ever bring Munchkin out anymore. I used to love it but I realized that you have to play with the right group or it’s awful and results in hurt feelings. The idea is that players will dogpile with modifiers and wandering monsters on whoever is winning, which would keep things balanced and keep playing from snowballing. What ends up happening is that someone plays a modifier against another player, that player gets pissed and spends the rest of the game screwing over that other player and keeping them in last place for no reason.

    @@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 Well you made me haul out my old Munchkin cards to see if my memory was right prompted by the video :) The gender bender cards (as highlighted by SunWong) are probably the thing that stands out the most, and all the bad puns. Also, the whole point of Muchkin is parodying D&D tropes and mixing in some pop culture to boot, both of which have changed a lot in 20 years. And things that I remember finding extremely funny from a pure absurdist perspective (I still have a plush Duck of Doom watching over my living room), I don't know if that works in 2022 where everybody basically grew up on the Internet and so you have to really work hard to reach absurdity. YMMV, I guess. *shrug* But I thought I remembered stuff that really made me cringe, and, it wasn't as bad as I remembered it being. • @misirtere9836

    @@ghoti221 The gender bender cards are actually remarkably progressive, all things considered. They say "change sex", which is factually accurate to what would occur. The vast majority of enbys do still have a biological sex, that's just different to what their gender is. And the distraction penalty makes sense - of course you'd be struggling to adapt to such a drastic change - but after the first battle it goes away, and the only further impact is when a card involves your character's sex.

  • @misirtere9836

    @misirtere9836

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Caiden Trans people still have a biological sex, and that is the only aspect the card involves. The only real argument here is intersex people, who by all accounts should fit into both categories simultaneously, but are also rare enough that not accounting for them with your game balance is understandable. And as for that last point, non-binary people can consider themselves whatever they like. It doesn't change that they've got something between their legs (which is an aspect they acknowledge since it has no impact on their gender identity), and that's the only thing the cards involve. It's not perfect, but aside from avoiding gender and sex altogether, it's just about the best it could've been handled without being too complicated.

    Man, I love the idea of Munchkin, I love the card art, I love the pun-based humor, but after playing a good number of times I just don't know if I can say I like the game anymore. A competitive dungeon crawl trying to be the first to get to level 10 while screwing over everyone else sounds like a blast in concept, but two things in particular stop me from enjoying the game as a whole. 1. When you get a crap starting hand or somehow lose your equipment, the game really kinda sucks until someone takes pity on you and takes your help in a fight and is generous with their treasure. Had one game that was particularly devastating when a curse wiped away everything I had equipped halfway through the game. Felt like I was basically knocked out of the competition entirely. 2. The End Game. Nothing but a giant crab-bucket where the winner is the first person able to fight a monster after everyone else exhausts all of their cards screwing everyone else over. 90% of all my Munchkin games end this way, with everyone at level 9 just constantly, desperately trying to stop everyone else from winning. It kinda drags on sometimes, and really makes me not want to play the game in the future.

    Munchkins is good when you make your own rules and such. If some rules don't make sense just agree on something and roll with it. It's a good casual game I think.

    This is so nostalgic for me. I started playing Munchkin in high school and I still own a combined set that I sometimes try to get people to play. This video made me super happy. SungWon's assessment is spot on too. It took me a little while to figure the game out too, but I had a lot of people to play with at the time so it worked out pretty quick. And once you've got the hang of how to play, the epic backstabbery can begin. Some of the games I played with my friends would have like 7+ players. Factions would start forming. Betrayals of brilliant complexity would play out. People would get hilariously butt-hurt. It was always funny. Love this game. And it gets a bit more fluid and deep with the main expansion packs.

    Quick comment on the NB thing: The curse specifically says that you change sex, which is biological, not gender, which is mental. Ergo, a NB player would be affected based on that metric. Not a hard rule, obviously, munchkin is very house rule friendly, but that would be my reading of it.

    It's worth mentioning that one of the official rules of Munchkin is (or at least used to be, might've changed in more recent editions) that you are allowed to cheat so long as you don't get caught. So, for example, you can opt to not discard down to 5 cards at the end of your turn but instead keep a 6th or even 7th, or you can try to equip two helmets when you can normally only have one... as long as you don't get caught. Of course, if you do get caught, you lose a level and have to discard whatever you got caught on.

    I don't know if this is just me, but something that definitely can make or break a game for me is the theme, or something I often call the "coat of paint" on that game. Like, for example, Monopoly at its core is about moving about a looping game board, purchasing spaces on the board, and charging players who land on said space in an attempt to make them run out of money. Its theme, its coat of paint, is that each player is a budding real estate developer trying to make a fortune buying up vacant lots in an up and coming neighborhood to develop housing on while trying to run all other developers out of business, establishing a monopoly on all rental properties in this neighborhood. And I got to be honest, for all the goofy and fun mechanics and the fact that this game can be really fun at times, I really just do not vibe with Munchkin's theme. The art style looks like a newspaper comic or one of those political comics clearly drawn by some out of touch old person, and it chooses humor and parody over anything and everything else. It has been a few years since I last played this game, and I am a d&d fan, maybe the Critical Role version of Munchkin would be more my speed. The only problem there is that licensed versions of board games can be quite a mixed bag, with the aforementioned game Monopoly being infamously lazy about theirs.

    I get what you mean about the rules being futzy, but don't forget that this is an intentional jab at the complexity of DnD tabletop rules from the creator. The booklet even actively encourages you to cheat if you can get away with it, the person who owns the game is allowed to tweak rules and create house rules, and at certain stores you can buy bookmarks that allow the owner to "cheat" during the game if they have the bookmark present.

    You've also got to remember that the game's humour stems out of tabletop gaming with "that guy" at the table. You may note that overall, there's a much higher benefit to playing as a woman as there are more cards that benefit from that trait. This is making fun of GMs who would hand out extra stuff to anyone playing a female character because they got weirdly attracted to it. It makes the game a bit dated, but is also a big part of the behaviour it's making fun of.

    I made some homebrew rules to this game and my friends loved it even more. A lot of the stuff I added was heavily inspired by Dune. For example, I created about 7 different roles players could choose between at the beginning of the game, and one is called The Benefactor (Bene Gesserit). At the very beginning of the game they write down who they predict will win (the chosen), and if their prediction is correct they win instead. Whenever someone reaches lvl 10 they have the option of guessing whether or not they were the chosen. If they guess correctly they win, if not their lvl is dropped to one below the lvl of the lowest lvl player. There is a bit more to the Benefactor such as rules that help them influence who is ahead in the game. Some of the other roles I made up are things like the Oracle, Merchant, Gambler, Monster Hunter (basically a Pokemon trainer), and a few others.
