You might think it's too personal of a setting, but trust us, that vulnerability is the ENTIRE POINT of Burnham's 'Inside.' I'm sure we would all like to see you in the thick of emotions (as we all were) when we got to "All Eyes On Me" And, since you probably can't react to the whole special without getting copyrighted, the last couple songs could suffice as a "proper" reaction video!

He was having regular panic attacks. To me, someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, that classifies as a breakdown. Yes, he was still able to work and do life, but he wasn't doing it live in front of a crowd because that was too much for him at the time.

    I love how in White Woman's Instagram, when it gets to the middle with the part about his mom, the camera sort of widens horizontally to the screen, it's like showing that the character is being 'real' in that part and then it slowly goes back to being square like before. It's such a good song, it teases you in to laughing at these types of people, and then reminds you that they're just humans expressing themselves in a now cliché way

  • @TheAlja

    Like for that one moment you can see the full picture. Before it narrows again. That song is an artistic masterpiece in my opinion. The song itself is basically also like what he describes. So much distraction around it, that you might even miss the moment where the real feelings, the struggle shines through, before the facade is reestablished.

  • @edisonlima4647

    @edisonlima4647

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TheAlja But after that widened screen part the rest of the song gets a new context and even the phrasing changes. After you hear about how her mother died and how she wishes she could show the mom her new apartment, job and lovely boyfriend and that her daughters is not a bad person, the following Instagram posts are about at least trying to think about the well being of others even if failing (the misguided political posts and quotes), buying stuff for her apartment and about her marrying the boyfriend she loves (it is not just "a glass of wine", but "a simple glass of wine", and not "a ring" but "a ring from the man I love"), which are the things she is sharing because she can't show them to her mother. It begs you to consider that even the shallow stuff, even if posed, IS still part of who she is or is trying to be to some extent. I mean, wedding pictures are the epitome of posed, but that doesn't mean the feelings are not (or could not) be real.

    In WTTI, he’s basically a snake oil salesman for the Internet. He grabs your attention by showing you this wonderful, shiny thing… and he tells you why it’s great, and slowly trickles in some of the cons with the pros, and the cons become more frequent, and increasingly worse, but you don’t notice them because it’s all being thrown at you so quickly and then when he sees he has you hooked, he sings a beautiful sort of lullaby’s about how much you’ve grown thanks to this wonderful cool thing, and by then he has you. So he evil laughs, because it worked. And then you belong to the evil man forever lol. White Womens Instagram is great because he plays up the stereotype of the typical, basic, white girl posting about ridiculous nothing, but then the aspect ratio widens to ‘real life’, and he describes how that ridiculous girl it’s fun to poke fun at is still human too, and has human feelings, even if they’re hidden by mundane materialistic things.

    Also, I'm pretty sure that he is using Autotune in Inside, as it was intended to be used (and wasn't on previous specials except turned way up for Can't Handle This). It was developed to make people's voices sound better than they actually do, then artists discovered it sounded cool if you turned it up "too far" and made that sound we now think of as autotune. To my ear, Bo is using it very expertly throughout Inside, then tweaked for All Eyes on Me. It's great, his tone is so rich! You can tell every once in a while, there's an edge to the sound. He may also have had singing lessons, as it seems like the autotune isn't having to correct pitch that much but rather is adding depth and timbre to the sound.

  • @lumandabel

    @lumandabel

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@nahadoth2087 I'm actually not sure he uses Autotune, it might be Flexpitch within Logic Pro X. He definitely is using Logic Pro X in Inside. That not only pitch corrects - which can make a big difference in how listeners experience the sound anyway - but also smooths vibrato and raises or lowers formant and a bunch of other stuff. This video kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGyo09GjibGchLQ.html gives an example around 13:35 that actually sounds a lot like Bo's younger voice, and pitch correction and vibrato adjustment make it sound richer to me. But not as rich as Bo sounded in Inside, so I totally agree that him getting older, perhaps plus vocal training as others have said, is probably also part of the improvement. My voice teachers always said that peak vocal age is after 30!

    I always feel compelled to make this point on White Woman Instagram. Bo makes fun of these women yes, but the part about the dead mom shows that he is fundementally empathetic towards these people he is making fun of. He does this because he knows that, just like the video, he is in their exact same position, doing what they are doing: he is curating his life for an internet audience, him with his comedy, them with their Instagram. They arn't any different, they both just need to be recognized, and both have a life underneath the persona, filled with struggles. He makes fun of them the same way he makes fun of himself, but it has to come from a place of love if he wants to expect the same. He needs to open up about his own struggles, and so he gives a place for this hypothetical woman to also open up, in the section of the video where the aspect ratio also opens up, and bursts outside the confines of an Instagram aspect ratio. Bo knows they are one and the same.

I'm not a woman, and my mom's not gone, but the delivery of those emotions just really hits hard. I think that was his way of saying yeah, we laugh at the dumb stuff people post online, but they're still real people with real issues. Beyond that the song is absolutely beautiful. The explanation for the difference in his singing voice compared to his previous specials may be that 1: he's older, so his voice has matured more since then. He was only 16 when he started on KZread, 18/in his early 20's during specials, and now he's 30. Not much changing would happen at these ages, (at least not compared to 12 to 16) but your voice still changes a bit. 2: He's always been good at singing and had a good voice, he was just kinda out of breath while performing live from going non stop and his anxiety. I know from experience that those two things make your voice sound less good lol

Even when he sings with autotune on his voice, people underestimate how good your voice and control have to be to make it sound as good as his songs usually do, especially since so much of his work is recorded live. Also 14:25, I thought it was great that Alice proudly announced she doesn't yet have a dog (with or without a "flower crown") or posted about avocadoes...with a plush octopus in a flower crown and an avocado on the shelf behind her.

    Welcome to the internet is VERY inspired by Dany Elfman's work. that evil and unsettling but also whimsical and fun feeling you mentioned. This entire comedy special touches on cognitive dissonance which this song causes in us. it is incredible. That all said, if you enjoy this kind of music you should check out natewantstobattle as well! Specifically Phantom by natewantstobattle or Twisted from his Ocarina of time inspired album. :)

    I love the many layers to the Instagram song, because the screen moves from the square of Instagram shots to more of a real video ratio when the song gets “real”/the hypothetical woman says something sincere… then right back to square and things either meant to appear a certain way.

    So. There's some songs that are perfect to listen to in context of the special and just good outside of the context. While, obviously, after listening to them once (or hundreds of times) before it'd be less exciting to watch the special. Hence I'm gonna list the songs that are, imo, are ok to listen to out of context even if you don't want to make 112% great impression into 104% (or something more like 80%), and that won't ruin your impression of the special, that songs being: • Comedy • FaceTime with My Mom (Tonight) • How the World Works • White Woman's Instagram ✓ • Unpaid Intern • Sexting • Problematic • Welcome to the Internet ✓ (Don't remember every song you've seen so far, but it's hard to miss those two))

    White woman's Instagram is peak Bo, a 80% silly song that people love cause it's so relatable then for just a short bit he shoves a message in there, "yeah this is a generic white woman, but she's also a person that's gone through tragedy and is trying to make a life for herself." Dude let's us laugh at a stereotype then smacks us to remember people are still people I LOVE it!

  • @andrewthornton2884

    Yup, an excellent reminder that even the supposed stereotypes are underneath it all real people, with real experiences and feelings and tragedies. That no one is only one thing. It's fine to make fun of the silly parts of it, but that we should always still keep that in mind. The use of the aspect ratio there is brilliant. That you somehow get people arguing on that song that no, that's just Bo continuing to make fun of the hypothetical white woman, is just insane.

    6:08 I haven't received one, in that I wasn't the intended recipient, but when I was ~12 we went to Delaware for a wedding, and I was forced to let one of my Delawarian cousins borrow my phone. He decided to use my phone to take roughly twenty pics of his trouser tadpole, and sent them to _every girl in his class_ through their _student email._ He then proceeded to not only _not delete the photos before returning my phone to me,_ he also *_made my phone's wallpaper his junk._* Needless to say, there's a reason I've never gone back to the East Coast.

    I really enjoy your energy in your videos and your sense of humour. After you live with someone for years who doesn't laugh at the things you do, its refreshing to find someone I can relate with while enjoying a joke. I was married to a Swede for 6 years, I loved her dearly, and she will always be a part of me, but man... ever watch your favorite movie with a friend and a really good part you like is coming up and you're waiting to see their reaction, and in the corner of your eye you see them on their phone instead or they leave to the restroom while saying "You don't have to pause it.) (sigh+sad face) Yeah... Anyways, on Bo. His music is always layered. On the surface he'll be funny, but somewhere in a song he'll bring up something that makes you think. In this one, delving deeper, this whole bit is about a single woman who's living life. Lost her mom at the age of 17, its been a decade since she died, at some point dad also died, and as song progresses you find that she eventually marries and is still moving forward. Even from here I'm sure one could dive even deeper and pull something else out of it.
