Last time I raced BMX was 1984. I've stayed with cycling off and on since racing mountain bikes and doing long distance road riding. I am very interested in getting back into BMX racing and these videos are definitely going to help. I have already been doing some sprints but have been picking up some great tips from your videos. Thanks.

Kids and even older riders pay attention to this guy. Im 50 years old and been riding for many years, mtb, motocross and i have had some good stacks and broken bones, im not the best rider but i love everything about bmx racing, the one thing that has kept me riding is training, strength training, cardio eg.. Basically what he is demonstrating, and i love to deadlift and squat, its one thing i have never stopped, my technic riding bmx is still got a while to go but the fun part is learning. So you just have to look at this dude and he is built like a beast and explosive! From Australia mate thanks heaps for sharing your experience with us, its alot of help and much appreciated. 🙋🏻‍♂️

Rad story. In 2004 if my memory serves me right of the year. We were at the Virginia national. Two racing buddies and I were walking through the pits and there was this kid with a wild blonde streak pin wheel hair doo. It was Barry. Working on his bike. We stopped and chatted a minute then watched Barry crush everyone in 14x class.

@7:34 I hear ya Barry on these types of work outs but when you say 'everyone wants to turn expert as fast as they can' I feel like this is a common issue in BMX. I used to race for several years 9-12X but back in the early 90's. The advice I give, other that these types of workouts is, during your time as a Novice and Inter rider is the time you really need to focus on bike skills and training. Don't spend your way to expert, meaning don't buy all the new carbon parts or the Ti spoke nipples... Because when you get to Expert, after having the fastest bike at your home track, you'll notice at big races that kids have the same tricked out bikes and now the playing field is even and the only thing that separates you is bike skill and training. I've seen it time and time again when these kids get to Expert they leave the sport cuz the parents 'bought' the kids Expert class. Buying stuff is great for the manufactures but not the sport.

Question from a newb, kind of. Getting back into racing at 48, and raced as a kid. Been mountain biking since, but am curious….do I keep my finger on the brake throughout the race, like when riding MTB, or just hold the grip and move the finger to the brake as needed? Weird and dumb question, I know.

@8:20 Barry no one races with clips, I think they may even be illegal in ABA races. Clip-less and flats are what everyone races on. Yeah I know what you're talking about but if you're making a video for beginners about good habits then call equipment by its actual name. Clip pedals have a cage around your foot, metal or plastic/fabric. Clips were here before clip-less pedals and thats why clip-less pedals aren't called 'clips'.

  • @barrynobles95

Every kid in the sport of bmx knows what the term “clips” are referring too. Someone new that may have no idea will also have no idea what “clip-less” is. No one calls them “clip-less” anymore.
