BMW VANOS Masterclass - Tear down + why it fails with MR VANOS - E36 M3 Touring Ep 09

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

As a BMW fan VANOS is something I'd heard of for a long time, mainly because they do like to fail, sometimes catastrophically! But truth be told I had no real idea how it actually worked.
I wanted to get my S50b32 unit refurbished, so invited Steve AKA MR VANOS down to share a slice of his knowledge. What Steve doesn't know about these engines probably isn't worth knowing, so it was great to have him disassemble the unit for me and discuss just how they work, and ultimately what causes them to fail.

    Mr VANOS needs to read-up on the s50b30 vanos units as he is wrong. These were not 2 stage but continuedly variable. The 1st 2 stage vanos unit was on the M50TuB25. Strange how a "VANOS expert" would get his so wrong.... The S50B30 VANOS was the same as the intake side only of the S50B32. The USA spec 3.0 M3 had a S50US engine which is from the M50Tu family... Also its not running at 120bar but 150bar. 42:00 the holes in each primary of the headers are for a tool used to measure exhaust gases used to correct the idle mixture adaptations. Not a "clear leftover unused sensor hole from motorsport". You need BMW TIS for this process. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next one!

    Yeah,, bit of missinformation regarding the S50B30 unit. The Rolls Royce vanos unit is essentially the same on when it comes to the intake side when looking at the S50B30 and the S50B32. The exhaust side of the B30 is just an oil pump. I also would like to know if the intake side on the B32 moves 60deg and not 40+ like the B30 because the gears look the same. Later in the video he names the B32 the S52.. just to confuse things a bit more. Good video though

    Speaking on experience, Steve is well worth the wait for anyone wanting a VANOS repair/replacement 👍. He doesn't have to do a house or garage visit in his business but he likes doing it and loves Mpower engines as all the customers do and viewers looking at the video. S62 V8 and S50 straight 6's are the best over engineered Mpower engines in my view and recall he shared his fondness of them engines also. He has an E36 M3 GT2 himself and looking to do a nut and bolt restoration but considering his long waiting list and customer demand we may never get to see it done 😂 but to be fair, GT E36s are going up! Full credit to Evolve and Mr Vanos for doing the video because barely anybody goes into this much detail.

A huge contrast to all the half-baked nonsense that Hoovie comes out with when he’s talking about BMWs on his channel, particularly the advice on maintenance, as he buys junk cars and then wonders why they’re not perfect.

    Hmm.. I was under the impression that the S50B30 had constantly variable vanos, just on the intake compared to the intake/exhaust on the B32. At least I am able to control it constantly variable within 40 degrees of movement using VEMS ECU The intro is a bit confusing, the single stage VANOS was not used on the S50Bxx, but rather the M50 series. The Vanos on the McLaren is constantly variable on the intake.

    P.S. mine was produced in march 1998 and my unit had that thin retainer clip on it. So I doubt it's production related and just whatever unit was taken off the shelf when the engine was built. I'm not 100% sure, but I recall my unit having no washer ring at all fitted anymore.

    I believe that its the best explication of vanos that exist in youtube,don't speak english and its difficult understanding sometimes,but I believe that its clear in my mind,later its other thing when have in front the vanos in the table,but I can test. Definitely goes to repair the solenoid and change the gaskets and putting upgrades. Its possible but titanium bolts for replace the tapes? The part of oil-pump,that was looks a holes covered,what's realize? Change oil pump or drill orifices? I want looks the next process,for me fuck Netflix this its better oh yess!! According to RealOEM the timing chain is shared with other M engines such as S14 and S38. The CPV on the side of the block is worth changing, or rather the seal is for a vitron one. Very difficult/impossible to do with exhaust manifold installed.

    I have experienced total disintegration of the unit and noticed the much bigger circlip on the later replacement units made by Sachs vs the original Roll Royce units. But I doubt the plastic washer plays a part here. I mean, it just sits loosly on top the needle bearing and sure itsn't going to hold in the bearing(race). That must be that circlip. I recall my replacement unit not having a washer on top at all and it's been 7 years since I fitted it.

  • @idonjohnson6999
    @idonjohnson69992 жыл бұрын

    Could the metal washer be from an E39 M5 unit? The washer isn't listed in the E46 M3 parts diagrams, unless it's not where you'd expect it. It is listed for the E39 M5 unit. Also I would and have always taken off the gauze filters on the solenoid. These always break down and clog up the oil passages.
