BMW Single VANOS: How It Works, How It Fails, How To Take It Apart, & How To Fix It!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BMW Single VANOS...many BMW enthusiasts understand how this Bavarian variable valve timing unit added more power on top of the original 6-cylinder engine for the E36 platform. I want to provide a closer look into all the components within the unit, and explore the mechanical design that allows for the M50B25tu to independently control the intake camshaft timing (BMW later produced a double VANOs system as mentioned in the video). Furthermore, I want to troubleshoot the potential problems that occur on tired units, and show you guys the options available to fix one for yourself or find a reputable refurbishing service. Cheers!

Man I almost brushed this video off... good thing I didn't though. You're explanation of the vanos system, it's common failures, symptoms of each failure, and the breakdown of exactly how each symptom is caused was awesome! Not to mention your editing skills were top notch and your delivery was clear and concise. KZreadrs take note... or better yet just let channels like this make the content and stop over saturating the platform with shit videos.

I just want to say I worked in Aerospace with parts thats tolerants went down to the millionths when finished. As far as your concern about sandblasting as long as you use masking tape to protect sensitive areas that cant have blasting materials thrown at it. Which is literally what we use to at a shop I worked at that makes $50,000 rear rotor gears for the sikorski Blackhawk helicopter and I can promise you that yes it can handle it. Only thing is you will want to run it through a hot tank after words or other cleaning product pretty much anything to rinse off the dust. In Aerospace we used Acetone, Hot tank (for parts in early stages of machining), mineral spirits, methanol, and isopropyl for cleaning. Typically blasting was only used for pre copper plating for heat treatment and glass bead blasting especially after copper plating was removed. I personally don't think at all blasting should ever be used for cleaning. Blasting is like for surface issues like rust or resurfacing, pretty much using friction to get a smoother surface. Now as far as sandblast for heat treatment goes I have no clue all why they do other than to remove all grease and oils on the surface and to leave the surface dry and protected from rusting before heat treating and they take the shit serious too like when you sand blast for heat treating you have to use gloves to put the parts away when you are done and even wrap them in paper to avoid cross contamination from the surface they were packaged in. Thought I should add that any time you use a sand blaster keep in mind that you are removing STOCK as well from the part and in areas where the tolerance is tight that can have some really bad consequences if you blast some parts for too long or too many times

Gra8t job on full explanation . My only question, does the outer gear that's on the vanos needs to be aligned with the cam gear , because I can pull the vanos unit without a cam locking tool and I can reinstall the vanos with a slite movement of crank bolt back and 4th to where the vanos gear goes in to the cam gear smoothly .
