BMW Single VANOS: How It Works, How It Fails, How To Take It Apart, & How To Fix It!!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
BMW Single VANOS...many BMW enthusiasts understand how this Bavarian variable valve timing unit added more power on top of the original 6-cylinder engine for the E36 platform. I want to provide a closer look into all the components within the unit, and explore the mechanical design that allows for the M50B25tu to independently control the intake camshaft timing (BMW later produced a double VANOs system as mentioned in the video). Furthermore, I want to troubleshoot the potential problems that occur on tired units, and show you guys the options available to fix one for yourself or find a reputable refurbishing service. Cheers!

Man I almost brushed this video off... good thing I didn't though. You're explanation of the vanos system, it's common failures, symptoms of each failure, and the breakdown of exactly how each symptom is caused was awesome! Not to mention your editing skills were top notch and your delivery was clear and concise. KZreadrs take note... or better yet just let channels like this make the content and stop over saturating the platform with shit videos.

Thank you for the compliments! Yeah this one was a video that took a lot of planning and organization, and I used a lot of material from a report I made on the single vanos system in college 😂. I appreciate your support on my work 🙏!
Honestly I've seen many e36 youtubers but I think your the best very detailed on instructions.

I just want to say I worked in Aerospace with parts thats tolerants went down to the millionths when finished. As far as your concern about sandblasting as long as you use masking tape to protect sensitive areas that cant have blasting materials thrown at it. Which is literally what we use to at a shop I worked at that makes $50,000 rear rotor gears for the sikorski Blackhawk helicopter and I can promise you that yes it can handle it. Only thing is you will want to run it through a hot tank after words or other cleaning product pretty much anything to rinse off the dust. In Aerospace we used Acetone, Hot tank (for parts in early stages of machining), mineral spirits, methanol, and isopropyl for cleaning. Typically blasting was only used for pre copper plating for heat treatment and glass bead blasting especially after copper plating was removed. I personally don't think at all blasting should ever be used for cleaning. Blasting is like for surface issues like rust or resurfacing, pretty much using friction to get a smoother surface. Now as far as sandblast for heat treatment goes I have no clue all why they do other than to remove all grease and oils on the surface and to leave the surface dry and protected from rusting before heat treating and they take the shit serious too like when you sand blast for heat treating you have to use gloves to put the parts away when you are done and even wrap them in paper to avoid cross contamination from the surface they were packaged in. Thought I should add that any time you use a sand blaster keep in mind that you are removing STOCK as well from the part and in areas where the tolerance is tight that can have some really bad consequences if you blast some parts for too long or too many times
Finally - theory of operation along with DIY repair. Plus, a couple of vendors for the parts thrown into the mix. Thanks!
Dude is thorough, great job bro!
Liked and subbed. The style, substance and quality of this video is amazing, thank you!
excellent video. I just installed a new Vanos on my 98 e39 today from Dr. Vanos. Already noticing extra power and better gas mileage
great vid, man. nicely done. i did this myself several years ago with the instructions from Beisan, I wish I had this video to reference when i did the rebuild.
Very good! I've watched all of your m50 videos. Thanks dude.

Nicely done young star. I've recently acquired an m52 to keep my m54 company. I look forward to seeing the differences in the 2.8 throttle cable initiated motor and its electrical throttled 3 litered brethren.

Great video. I really liked the dancing bolts timed with the music.
Very impressive! Thank you.
Definitely one of the best how to videos. What lube did you use on the bearings during assembly?
Really excellent video. Thank you.
Great video, really enjoyed it and I don't even own a BMW!
Outstanding video. Excellent information and presentation. Thank you for posting this. I have a 97 528i with a M52. assume this is the same vanos unit.

Just subscribed your Chanel! Really nice work my friend!!! The fact that you have 2 units to compare themselves and doing the actual work on one of them is the best you can make. I'm doing some research to repair my s50b30 vanos unit. That's from my M3 that I'm restoring. If you're interested, I can give you some feedback after. Good looks!

Jc Finch yes, it does. The s52 is actually a bored out euro 2.8 m52. So same running gear for vanos.
Amazing very thanx bro good working
Fabulous video. The way some mechanics talk about the VANOS system, it just about scares you. Your concise description makes me realize that it is something I can tackle myself and that it is actually quite a simple system. Thank you so much for your wonderful video. I am definitely bookmarking this one.

Nice job on your explanation with disassembly procedure! Just a quick question, are you experiencing a check engine light or are you hearing noise when deciding to rebuild unit? Or is this part of the tear down of the engine re-build? Nice job.
You are awesome! Thank you

Excelente! sobre todo por hacer referencias a las medidas de las piezas. Todos cambian piezas sin saber que medidas deben llevar. O si realmente hay diferencia entre la medida de la pieza nueva y la pieza vieja. Muy bueno!
sorry but this video keeps being so useful, i was just wondering wher can i check the torque and specs for the unit
Thanks mate
I have a 98 323i and I've been having issues with no power under about 3k. I replaced my crankshaft and camshaft position sensors which fixed it for about 2 to 3 weeks and its right back to not working again. I'm gonna give this repair a shot.
Great job you're a pro..!!

great video and informative the vanos left hand thread can be tuff to remove once out of the engine have you any cost on new vanos units
very nice
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 no nonsense tech video
one of few informative videos out there that actually explained all I need to know about vanos,,, have a question?- is there a recommended time interval you would absolutely advised on overhauling the vanos? I have 2004 with barely 50k miles-runs smooth no issues with power or torque, no rattle, no strange sounds,,, however age wise it is getting close to being 20 years old
Legend! Thank you

hello , hell of a video. love it will watch again and again. only question that did have. what did you torque to spec? The outside cover plate? or the torx screw inside the unit? and what were those torque specs i would greatly appreciate it.
Gra8t job on full explanation . My only question, does the outer gear that's on the vanos needs to be aligned with the cam gear , because I can pull the vanos unit without a cam locking tool and I can reinstall the vanos with a slite movement of crank bolt back and 4th to where the vanos gear goes in to the cam gear smoothly .
Love the video, Pawin! Huge fan of your turbo beast! Planning to do the vanos rebuild on my e36. Is it possible to replace the vanos seal without locking the cams in with cam blocks? I'm assuming there is no need because you dont mess with timing by removing the vanos piston. Thank you!
@Pawinning
5 жыл бұрын
The cam locks are necessary because there are steps where you need to rotate the cam gears to remove/install the vanos unit. Check out my m50 disassembly video!
great video dude. helpful :) one small question: this unit is on US base model e36 3 series, and also US M3's ... correct?
great video, but you have some video that show how remove the vanos from the engine.? What are the correct procedure!? if I have lock, the engine or something? thanks
