    Very happy to hear you will be doing videos on the N20. I think it's a wise addition that will provide for a great return & spike in eyeballs. Just pepper your titles with "N20." I have a 2015 528i and love working on the car. Its super easy to maintain & work on. Everything is easily accessible with the exception of a few things, mostly on the side the Turbo resides, like the CO2 Sensor, etc. Troubleshooting however is were I lack the skills. I did give it a Transmission Oil change at 50k miles. But, I am looking forward having you demonstrated doing a Transmission Flush at home. You just keep doing what you do best and they will follow. Regards

    2011 f30 94k and my water pump is malfunctioning, fans would come on and off on and off . And keeps doing , code said 20A804, those water pumps are not reliable always something, do to the car being from east coast I know electrical components do not like to be where there is moisture. Bought the car from a private party around 60k and after washing engine bay the car went in to limp mode. I did fine the problem ,the connections on the engine are the problem water gets in there very easy and you need to take it off and blow it out dry ,and it will come back if engine bay will get washed I packed it with some electric greas and that's it.

Would like to see you do one. In middle of replacing the guides now, but can't find where to pin the crank, to take balancer bolt out.

    I'm on the F30 forums all the time. The biggest thing I hear about regarding the n20 is the timing chain issue. All the other problems you mentioned exist, but they don't seem that common. The F30s must have set a new benchmark of reliability, for BMW -- there doesn't seem to be a lot of common problems, otherwise (aside from squeaks and rattles).

    First time on your channel probably because just 2 months ago I purchased my 1st BMW. Now I'm older guy in my 60's and owned tons of cars and SUV's over the years most of the major brands American, Japanese and some Europeans ones. It just seemed in the past it was always the later that gave me the most issues - always loved the way they drove but hated the parts and labor cost when they broke. So I now like SUV's it just fits my life style. I found a CPO 2017 X1. It's not going to blow anyone off the road that's not what I'm going for at all. What do you think of that Engine? I've only owned one other turbo car prior which was a Saab 95 and the turbo later started leaking oil. So one much newer and only 50K so I drive my car long and many miles - well over 100K.

    Well I have a 2014 bmw 328 with 241,000 km - I really haven’t experienced any major issues but I do change my oil every 10,000 Km - I worry about never changing my transmission fluid but the transmission shifts great still - no leaks , nothing - the gas mileage is fantastic. Now I don’t t accelerate like a crazy person - I drive very moderately so I am not sure if it’s because of this - maybe I am not putting pressure on the turbo ? Not sure why I have had such good reliability - Changed under warranty - oil sensor , NAV screen , and some sort of pulley belts under the extended warranty. Is my car going to explode soon?

    I'm so tired of people saying N55's blow up randomly. If you tried hard you could probably find one failure that was an original owner, non tuned, well maintained car (not 10,000 - 14,000 oil change intervals) . All other failures people talk about online never offer any proof of the failure method and the dealers can't take apart the engines to find out why either . It's just internet nonsense. The N55 was produced in massive number compared to the N54 for example and even if you could find 10 documented failures that were prematurely on stock well maintained cars, it would be statistically insignificant.

  • @Cyrix2k

    @Cyrix2k

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hard to tell. I've seen a disturbing number of ads for N55 vehicles that have had the engine replaced by BMW. Hopefully its just the internet blowing it out of proportion... my family just acquired an N55 E70. I've done a lot of work on N54s and they've been much better than the internet would suggest.

  • @twinscrolled

    @twinscrolled

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Cyrix2k yeah all engines have a failure rate, I have seen a few N55 failures but no concrete evidence that it is a fault in the engines design that caused the failure , all of them have been multiple owner cars that were tuned with little to no documented maintenance. BMW did issue a tsb about priming the engine after doing an oil filter housing gasket change but they offered no insight as to why. Anyone who says the N55 has some specific fault causing a large number of failures is just full of shit really. But I have seen a few "reputable" shops and builders make such statements with zero context or proof to back it up.

  • @twinscrolled

    @twinscrolled

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Cyrix2k and speaking of ads, I found a super clean one owner 335is that was dealer serviced only and it's first oil change was not done until 14,000+ miles and it had 60k on it and every oil change was done at over 10,000 miles. In my opinion those intervals are way too long and common for those owners who just let the cars CBS system tell them when the car needs service.

    Hey, I enjoy the BMW videos and I will keep watching, but I gotta say that my biggest take away since they channel move more away from the e46 and e39 era cars to the newer models is that the newer stuff just doesn’t seem DIY friendly or as durable as the older cars. Seems like there is more interest creeping in on the ‘80s era e30/e28s through to the late ‘90s e46/e39 cars, which probably explains why the prices on these older cars are on the rise. They really are a joy to work on compared to the stuff made in the last 10 years and people who want to turn their own wrenches are starting to notice it. Not picking on the newer BMWs here ... its just they way the industry is moving; more and more computers controlling plastic parts that are just not designed and engineered to last. It just seems like BMW is now happier building the “ultimate leasing machine”; runs great, fast, fun to drive, dependable ... until the lease expires then the engine/trans/electrical system blows. It seems to be what its all about with more and more new cars. Very sad to me.

    I am thinking about buying a new BMW X3. I have owned BMWs in the past with the amazing 3.0 six and am concerned about the N20's reliability. Four cylinder turbos can be expensive to own. I owed an Audi A4 and had turbo issues constantly. Finally, at 50K miles, the turbo died--a $4,000 repair bill. Needless to say, I got rid of the Audi and will NEVER own one again. A friend of mine who is a veteran mechanic for Honda observed that no 4 cylinder turbo can be reliable over time. The combination of increased heat and wear to achieve greater performance works against long term reliability. My question is this: is the N20 turbo reliable? What's the track record for turbo failures? Cost to replace a turbo? How much oil does the N20 use between oil changes? I would really like to own an X3, but I'm concerned about the turbo 4 engine. Thank you!

    I wouldn't touch an N20 or N26 with a 10 foot pole unless you're comfortable with doing the timing chain. If the chain snapped, the motor is toast. The N55s are crazy reliable for a BMW. The first few years had issues with rod bearings. That issue was addressed in around 2013 when ALL N55s started using the S55 rod and crank bearings and the S55 forged rods. The 2014+ N55s also went to electronic wastegates along with a larger turbo. If you get an M235, you also get a forged crank and more cooling upgrades. Lastly, the 2014+ N55s have injectors that require no coding. Injectors rarely fail as well.

But it’s very tight regardless and absolutely no timing noise at all on start up or while driving. AMSOIL is the remedy i recommend for these N20s, specifically the 0W-40 European Formula. Still get 36 mpg on the highway with it. The ones with a build date 1/2015 or after have the updated one but mines is 9/2014 but mines feels really solid, maybe BMW was putting revisions to the timing assemblies months before they duly went with revised ones.

    I have no problem with the lottery scratch off videos especially if you are making money on them and since I never buy them it's entertaining to watch you scratch and and not win or at least not win more than you spend. It's a better you than me thing. I do think if you could actually win a decent amount on a video you would probably get a huge number of views.

    @Cyrix2k

    Possibly. I don't have a lot of experience with the N20, but so far it seems more reliable than the N52 it replaced. Some of that is because I've dealt with higher mileage & obviously older N52s so it isn't quite a fair comparison. But the N20 I've maintained has only needed spark plugs and a thermostat (under recall) whereas every N52 I touch is basket case. They'll run forever ...after you replace *everything.*
