I have a 535d (M57 engine) that was difficult to start when it was around zero degrees celsius or colder. After i changed glow plugs and glow plug module, my car started easily in minus 10 degrees celsius. When diesel cars have problems starting when it is cold, it is very common that the glow plugs and/or glow plug module are defective. The smartest thing is to change both the glow plugs and the glow plug module at the same time when you first have off the intake manifold.

Very interesting video, thanks. My BMW Dealer says that I need to replace my glow plug control module and Carly Adapter shows all 6 glow plugs in fail mode due to this. However, when I have asked my dealer to also replace the glow plugs, they responded that they will replace the ones they can remove but leave the others in place if cannot be removed. How strange is that? Does this mean that in few cases, glow plugs cannot be removed? My car is a BMW 335D E92 from 2008 with a 155 000 km mileage and frankly speaking, I had never had any issue with the pre-heating except since I am living in Sweden and temperatures were approaching -15, -20 deg C and the car was very hard to start, Now that temperatures are a bit better between -5 and +5 deg C, the car starts OK but coughs a little bit for 5-10 seconds or so once starting... do you feel that only the glow plug control module can be responsible for this?
@dimitarkamnarovski9653

Yes the glow plug module cn definitely be responsible for this. Also the glow plugs are very prone to snapping and if they snap they get stuck in the head of your engine. Maybe BMW doesn't want to run the risk of breaking them and having to extract them out of your engine because it is a very difficult and annoying procedure that includes drilling and stuff like that. I would replace the glow plug module first, clear the faultcodes, and then see if it's better. If it's not better you will still need to change the plugs. If you want to tackle the plug yourself you need to warm up the engine, shut it off, then take the intake manifold off, soak the plugs in wd40 for at least 2 hours and then veeeerrryyyy slowly cracking them lose whit a spray of wd40 and very slowly crack them cm by cm when turning so very slowly. Hope this answers your question and informs you a bit extra :)

@@erico6117 if you are going to replace a glow plug, it is best to replace them all at once. When replacing glow plugs it is never a bad idea to replace the moduoe as well. Dimitar, the dealership confirmed that none of the plugs are actually bad. But the plugs module itself is faulty and now along with the throttle body valve. Both needs to be replaced. They also mentioned that my battery is bad and also needs to be replaced. I wonder if it’s because of the low voltage battery level that it’s throwing out faulty module and the throttle body valve. The car shifts fine, no power loss, no studder, nothing. I’ve drove the car hard with the CEL on for a week before I took it to the dealership. What do you think ? Could it be my low voltage battery throwing out those faults ?
