BMW M2 CS or E46 M3: Which is More Fun to Drive?

My brother, David, and I spent a day driving our cars - his 2020 BMW (F87) M2 CS and my 2004 BMW (E46) M3 - back-to-back through the winding roads of North Georgia. I got some footage along the way - and David's candid thoughts on both cars afterward. It was particularly interesting to hear his perspective given that he had owned my M3 from 2008 to 2011 - back when it had the SMG transmission - and has had 5 BMW M cars (E60 M5; F82 M4; F87 "OG" M2; M2 Competition; and now - the M2 CS) since then with every kind of gearbox. I was surprised by what he had to say.

I’m sure there’s a special feeling in owning such a rare, special edition model. That alone would make it more fun for me haha, especially with all that torque. But the E46 being so analog is amazing. Great video Brent, David seems cool 🙌

Yeah - we both got bit by the bug around '93 when my buddy Wyatt almost bought an E34 M5 (good thing he didn't; it would have bankrupted him!) That thing blew us away, and it was "possible" that someday we might get one. When my brother was getting his PhD, he had a poster (that now hangs in my garage) of a then new E46 M3 with the line: "Sure - a PhD is pretty impressive, too." Well - he kept at it. :) Thank you, Mike. The encouragement from guys like you helps me stay motivated to keep going.

Great comparison. Due to my job, I've been driving brand-new BMW 3-series for the best part of the last 15 years. They have become so capable that - even on track - I struggle to find the limit of the car... I find my own limits long before that. I intentionally tried (unsuccessfully) to upset an M2 in a fast change of direction at the BMW Performance Center in South Carolina. The car didn't even lose traction once. My E46 M3, instead, is still at a point where I can test its limits and have fun thinking that I'm able to bring it close to them.

Thanks so much for watching, Corrado. We really have to get together this spring.. It's silly that we're so close by and haven't met up yet. Anyway, I hear what you mean, though it's really good to hear your perspective as I don't drive as many different cars as I wish I did. As Billy Joel said, "you can't get the sound from reading a story in a magazine." What you and David say reminds me of the feeling I had driving the first car I bought - a '94 Honda Accord with VTEC. It came alive above 4k rpm, and was so much fun (at the time) to drive the snot out of it....all while barely even breaking speed laws! Even with the E46, I can only drive the snot out of it for a few seconds at a time without risking getting into serious trouble fast! ;)

I recently sold a mint condition, low mileage E46 M3 6MT with quite a few "improvements", such as coil-overs, sway bars, 4.10 diff, exhaust, autosolutions 30% reduction shifter, CDV delete, etc. The car replacing the E46 M3 is an M2C DCT. I enjoy driving the M2C much more than the E46 M3. Normally, I would prefer a manual transmission, but the Getrag 420G used in the E46 M3 is a turd. IMO, it's the biggest flaw of the vehicle. I don't think it's a desirable feature of a car that you have to "work for it". The accessibility of the M2C is one of the things I like most about it. The car can be completely docile one minute and spitting fury the next. I credit that to the torque of the S55 and the DCT. It would be interesting to drive an E46 M3 with the same DCT as the M2C. I also find my completely stock M2C to be much more planted than the E46 M3, even with the coil-overs and sway bars. The one thing about the E46 M2 that the M2C can't compete with is the sound. There is nothing like the sound of a high revving NA engine like the S54, S65 or S85.

When I drove my f80 m3 it was For coolness factor , when I drove my e46 I just drove for the passion of driving . I’m older now , slowing down to smell the roses in life is something I’m learning . It’s all what your perception is at your stage in life. less is more sometimes and these faster cars really test your limits on the road , I drove a 911 turbo once and damn if I didn’t give it back I would have felt like I’m gonna Kill myself or not be able to use the car on public roads so what’s the point ,aside drag racing on some high speed roads just to feel like I ‘beat’ a total stranger . 500 bhp cars are thrilling but 350 n/a is a sweet spot . Think pornstar or girlfriend experience 😂.

I’m forgetting who recently said 350hp is ideal recently. It was a highly-respected journalist. Anyway, I hear you loud and clear.. For sure, with the E46, every little bit of the road at any speed is just so much more immersive. From the sound of the S54, to the super-communicative suspension and steering, even to its ride height - it’s a great driving experience. Not for everyone, but if that’s what you want - the E46 delivers. And yeah - the new turbo models are designed to be super smooth and luxurious, and they’re so fast you just can’t legally drive them fast and get that driving experience. It’s the same reason 4-cylinders are often more fun than a V8; you can wind them out without hitting dangerous speeds.
