    Hey Brent, another great video! At the end of the month, I will have owned my 2005 M3 for 14 yrs. I've put just a hair over 54k miles on it and spent a total of $16k in maintenance and parts, which averages out to less than $1200 a year not including the gas. I need to spend some big money soon. Much like yours, my interior plastic trim has the "alligator skin" peeling look, I should see about getting the rod bearing issue looked at, and the front and rear suspension/bushings need refreshed at this age since most are original factory parts, so that may be in the works here in 2024. I can't believe I've had a car this long, but at the same time, I can't ever see myself selling it either because it's just so much fun, even if it does get more costly as it ages. I think most people would agree, even our health is more costly as we age too. So, we have to take care of the things we love, the things that put smiles on our faces, especially when we put our right foot down to the floor. In the end, it's all worth it, especially when you have an E46///M3! 😎

    As a bona fide middle-ager now, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you say here! While it stings, given what a new car costs, at some point replacement parts simply become necessary. But yeah - life without my M3 would be unbearable. Every time I twist that key and hear that straight-six come to life, every worry just melts away. Sadly, we've gotta pay for that. Fortunately, I've never regretted a dime spent on that car. Thank you so much commenting; you made me smile big! Congrats on 14 years!

    If you love the drivers car, enjoy doing diy maintenance, and would otherwise just lease a car, then this is a great choice financially. I compare my ownership and maintenance cost of my e46 m3 to what it would typically cost for a decent lease which would be $300-$400 per month. Over 5yrs thats $21000 on average which is about the cost of a used m3.. money that you'll never recoup in a lease. You may end up using $10000+ for maintenance on the m3 but it provides so much enjoyment and retains its value so well compared to a new car that its a wonderful proposition all around. Loving mine after 7yrs and somehow it gets better each year

    Indeed, I don't say this in every video, but I've made the point more than once that if you're tracking the M3, SMG is the way to go... unless you've mastered heel and toe, which I and most others have not. It's a great gearbox. From a driving experience - as I use the car - the manual has added new life, freeing the engine up - and the driver's experience of it. I'd say they're both great gearboxes, but really they're the same - the Getrag 420g. It's really a matter of how you use the car. In the nearly 13 years I've owned it, I've tracked it once. The SMG made all the difference. Now that it's converted, day-to-day as I use it, I love it as a manual.

  • @darylmorse

    I recently sold a pristine, low mileage E46 M3 6MT after 10 years of ownership. I replaced it with an M2C DCT. I had both for around 4 months, so I had a chance to compare them quite a bit. My E46 M3 had a lot of "improvements" such as an eisenmann exhaust, a carbonio intake, pulleys, sway bars, coil overs, a 4.2 diff, an AS 30% reduction shifter, CDV delete, CSL brakes and various other things, so it handled, accelerated, stopped and sounded better than stock. It was a fun car to drive, but not nearly as fun as the M2C. I think a lot of people overly romanticize the E46 M3. I will say that the S54 sounds much better than the S55 and many people prefer the hydraulic assist steering of the E46 M3 compared to the electric assist steering of the F87. I think the E46 M3 is a nice looking car, but I also like the looks of the F87. The M2C handles much better, due to the more modern suspension and the wider track. I wouldn't be surprised if the F87 has higher torsional rigidity than the E46 M3 as well. For me, by far the biggest difference and what I enjoy the most about the M2C is the accessibility of the power. The car switches from docile to rabid beast instantaneously. This is due in part to the massive torque of the engine, but also due to the DCT. I would love to drive an E46 M3 with a 4.10 diff and the DCT from the M2C. I think it would transform the car. Alas, that's not going to happen. The things I disliked about the E46 M3 are the transmission (even as a manual with an improved shifter and CDV delete it's horrible), the clunky drivetrain and the fact that you had to drive it so hard for it to be enjoyable. I think some people convince themselves that they like having to work for it, but I prefer instant gratification. I also disliked the poor quality materials in the interior. Practically speaking, while the E46 M3 is easier to maintain than many newer cars, you better be good with a wrench if you own one or be prepared to spend a lot of money keeping it up. Even if you do the work yourself, parts are not inexpensive. And on top of that, many parts are no longer available new. Prices are going up for very high quality E46 M3s, but these cars are rare. Most of the lower priced cars have very high mileage, so they are going to cost money to keep on the road. I would have fetched a higher price for my car if I sold it last year, but I still did pretty good. It almost paid for my M2C. I'm very glad I sold the E46 M3 and bought the M2C.

  • @darylmorse

    I recently sold a mint condition, low mileage E46 M3 6MT with quite a few "improvements", such as coil-overs, sway bars, 4.10 diff, exhaust, autosolutions 30% reduction shifter, CDV delete, etc. The car replacing the E46 M3 is an M2C DCT. I enjoy driving the M2C much more than the E46 M3. Normally, I would prefer a manual transmission, but the Getrag 420G used in the E46 M3 is a turd. IMO, it's the biggest flaw of the vehicle. I don't think it's a desirable feature of a car that you have to "work for it". The accessibility of the M2C is one of the things I like most about it. The car can be completely docile one minute and spitting fury the next. I credit that to the torque of the S55 and the DCT. It would be interesting to drive an E46 M3 with the same DCT as the M2C. I also find my completely stock M2C to be much more planted than the E46 M3, even with the coil-overs and sway bars. The one thing about the E46 M2 that the M2C can't compete with is the sound. There is nothing like the sound of a high revving NA engine like the S54, S65 or S85.

    The SMG is way better matched to these cars and adds more drama... The manual they got was an afterthought....With 6 gears and bad ratios.... The SMG is the one!!!... I love my M6 and the only time the SMG is not great (Compared to a DTC ) is at low speeds and when you don't want all the aids off... So you don't have access to the fastest shifts... When fully lit in the M6, i know i wouldn't want the manual, the brutal shifts at 8k with a touch of flare up from the back wheels with a whip crack back into that seet spot NEVER gets old!!!! We got the best one lol...

  • @brentdcampbell
    @brentdcampbell4 ай бұрын

    Indeed - the SMG is the intended gearbox for the S85, and it's way faster than a manual. But the control you get with a manual? Priceless. You're driving a luxury sedan that's actually a muscle car. To feel it fully, you've gotta have a manual. I well understand that the SMG is objectively better in all ways but the driving experience. SMG or manual, the S85 is amazing. I was watching SavageGeese yesterday and Mark and Jack were lamenting the fact that BMW no longer puts even a V8 in a 5-series. That for one glorious moment they put a V10 in it, well, I'm counting my blessings!

    Absolutely amazing video Brent. Love it and cannot agree more. Further development of the s65 and s85 maybe with a little more durability, more displacement, and manual or DCT only. No more SMGs. There is no doubt the latest cars are fast and powerful but with SUVs sharing their performance engine as their sport sedans and coupes shows that things feel a bit more generic. I too love the Jan of the latest but my lust for the latest M is not what it used to be. The also agree on the last M2 Comp and CS are the closest thing and they are amazing but other than that. Time will tell. Great video and hope you are keeping well Brent. Cheers

    Sorry to just see your comment, Mark! I'm so glad you enjoyed the vid. I suppose nothing lasts forever, eh? Thankfully BMW made a lot of cars that we can enjoy for many years to come.. I really enjoyed that chat we had a few years back. How about we do that again sometime? I'm curious what you're up to these days...beyond making videos, of course. :)

    We are truly cut from the same piece of cloth. Well done, Brent. Aside from the M5CS and M3 touring(loath the front and the fact that it will NEVER come stateside), I do wish BMW did a better job taking the money they print from the SUVs and making the M brand feel more special and unique. It just feels so watered down. Keep up the great work.

  • @brentdcampbell
    @brentdcampbell Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and your words. Dan. Yeah - it seems the evolution of a car’s form is changing so fast, it’s hard to hold on to what made M so special in the first place.

    Do you feel newer fuel efficiency regulations led BMW to make their cars not as exciting or do you feel Porsche debunks that notion & BMW is trying to appeal to a more profitable group (non enthusiasts)

  • @brentdcampbell
    @brentdcampbell Жыл бұрын

    Great question, Bobby. Probably a little of both. Porsche’s got their act together (I’m driving that Taycan today, so we’ll see), and BMW is raking in profits as the ultimate SUV maker (my bro just got a X7, and I’ll review it before long.) My theory is that BMW is going where the profits are as they continue to throw bones at U.S. enthusiasts with totally unaffordable special edition models. I get it, but it kinda sucks. Thankfully, many of the classics are still roadworthy and their owners are forever incentivized to keep them that way.

    @@brentdcampbell when reviewing the M2 you seemed to have enjoyed it & when evaluating pure metrics, the newer cars better than the older ones. Despite that, what did you feel it was missing from the M2 as a BMW enthusiast?

  • @brentdcampbell
    @brentdcampbell Жыл бұрын

    @@philliesphan334 Oh, I quite like my brother's M2 CS - the F87. Comparing it to the E46 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYh_k9ytY5rQl7g.html), it lacks a bit of the race engine specialness of the older Ms - in that it's really a tuned and boosted version of the production straight-six. Fast as hell, but not as special. I suppose my point of this video is that BMW used to build for enthusiasts knowing that regular car buyers would want what the enthusiasts wanted. It worked. Nowadays, BMW has shifted to making SUVs and other cars that lack appeal to most enthusiasts. That's working, too. For now, at least.

    Well BMW certainly left me way behind about twenty years ago. I've now got my small cluster of manual N/A cars and have zero interest in the inflated bloated M cars of today. With an M3 at 1700+kg they're only going one way, and it's a tragedy. But again, the prices are keeping pace so I'll never be in that rarified market. Add-in the artificially accelerated transition to electric-power focussing purely on Li-ion and well... I'll keep the dinosaurs company I suppose! Terrifically high-quality video as always, Brent. Thanks for taking so much of your time producing and researching it.

  • @brentdcampbell

    Do you think they’re wrong to do it? After all, we enthusiasts make up a tiny percentage of their customer base (I for one have never bought a new car.) Used to be the enthusiasts brought everyone else along, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore. It’ll be interesting to watch how things unfold. As for the vids, thank you so much for your props. I could do this 60 hours a week and never tire of it. Too bad it doesn’t pay the bills! I’m driving that friend’s Taycan today. Will be interesting…

    I think based on the fact alone that the M2/M3/M4 still come with a third pedal shows they are still doing the best they can to cater the M brand to enthusiasts, after dropping it from the M5s and beyond. I haven’t watched the other reviews but I think the M2 looks great and has an impressive stat sheet and agreed with daddy Doug on it. Just sucks that Bmw is left with no choice but to focus on the boring cars, it’s us enthusiasts vs ordinary consumers and the consumers will win every time because that’s where the money is. Great video!

    I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Yeah - this video took me two weeks. I'm a bit of a perfectionist; I try to make each video "the best I've ever done." I question how realistic it is for me to keep doing that, but I do enjoy it. Well, I did go to Spartanburg but didn't do a driving course this time. They have a museum there, called "The Centrum," which is excellent. Took lots of pics, too. I will include them in my next video, but I've been thinking the next one should be about the evolution of BMW design. I got to go to the launch event this past Thursday for the new XM - the most powerful car I've ever driven. I posted about it on Facebook here: facebook.com/brentdcampbell/posts/pfbid0Zq16ShY1DMLifpauSQaVY636za3sYen5S2cuDHmJzuq7PRUiQvCAUeRMFFmvcwwbl?comment_id=991383758946871&notif_id=1682728841542778&notif_t=feedback_reaction_generic&ref=notif. Having said that, I have been to the BMW facility half a dozen times, give or take. And I did a proper review of the experience - including the driving - back in July '19 when my brother and I picked up his M2 Competition. You can watch it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yn5hrZZ9gMzAhdo.html. Enjoy!
